However, I do find it sad that this talented man's life was cut short in such a dramatic way leaving a massive void for those who loved him most. He did come across a very genuine and hard working man who certainly appeared to engineer his life around his passion for fashion and design, both areas in my own life I lack any talent or skill. His clothes he’s were not that expensive when GV first started, well not as expensive as in the early 90’s with the silk shirts. I bought a flannel grey no collar short at this small novelty store for about $35. This was 81-82 and I guess GV was trying to get his clothes in any store he could. I think the label said Gianni Versace Design. A few years later GV was getting some attention for his clothes and design and before that, hardly anyone knew who he was. I only noticed GV for his wild design in the Italian men’s vogue ads in the early 80’s. When he launched he’s first women’s perfume in 82, he made a appearance at Macy’s San Francisco and I went to meet him. I told him I wanted to get in the fashion business and he just said good luck and signed something, I don’t think he spoke English very well in 82. He had very soft hands. I found out from one of the fashion directors at Macy’s that he was having a private fashion show at the St. Frances hotel, but it was sold out. They said they would let me know if there’s any cancellations. So a few hours later they called me from Macy’s and said I would be able to buy a ticket for $50. I rushed to pick up the ticket and had to buy a GV item to wear. I wasn’t rich and don’t even have a job and only 18 years old. But I found this great 3/4 jacket in turquoise color marked down to half price in my size with a broken zipper. So I showed up all dolled up and everyone else was pretty conservative and in suits. Anyway, I love discovering ppl. before the rest of the world eventually did and again I was right about GV. Back then, when you were into new great things, the rest of the world thought you were weird bc of the mindset of ppl. back then. When I wore GV back then before ppl. knew about him, ppl. thought I was a freak and strange. Glad ppls. minds are finally opening up after 40 years.
