I have a set of MG-1 speakers I purchased a *long* time ago - almost 40 years maybe? I'll be married 37 years this year, and I bought them a year or two before getting married, so, yes, almost 40 years now. I *DO* have them mounted on the wall. Granted, I may give up a bit of quality - fair enough - but it can be done. What I did was unscrew the base from the speakers, and then created four brackets out of oak. I mounted two bottom brackets so that the bottom of each MG-1 is about 16 inches from the floor. Interestingly enough, given the nature of the directionality of the sound, this was a benefit. I ran the cabling to a 2-gang box in the wall for each speaker, and then a third where they exit and are connected to my system. I added a powered sub-woofer as maggies are helped by this. Before connecting the speakers I set each in the bottom bracket and placed each top bracket in place and marked the wall. If I recall, I located each stud and set the screw into that. I wanted a solid connection in order to use what small amount of additional sound the wall might emit. I suspect not much but, hey, vibrations do travel. Edit: I forgot to mention I was able to run the cables in the wall as my office was more like soon-to-be office and the walls had not been drywalled yet. You may not have that luxury, but if it's your place walls can easily be opened up and patched. I work from home writing software and am at my desk a lot. Initially the speakers were behind me. I changed things around and the speakers are on my right side now so I have tuned the room with two other speakers a little. My office isn't an opera hall :) and this is good enough I've thought about doing the same when I finish the last two rooms in my basement - one where we'll watch movies. The MG-1s, with their fabric and oak strips would look like decoration, but having somewhere around six would be pretty cool I'd think. I noticed with the model you showed that the angled bracket was held on by a clearly visible screw. I think if you could stand to violate the goal of audio perfection a little (not a slam AT ALL - I get why folks want this stuff right), you might find you like it. Regards

Jay, I've just received my latest, biggest tweak EVER for my LRSs. I got the Magna Riser Airborne stands. They utterly transformed the LRS into a bigger, fuller, clearer, more powerfully engaging speaker. Image grew in height, width, and massively in depth. I'm just dumbstruck. It's the best $235 I've ever spent. On ANYTHING related to HiFi. EVER. PLEASE give them a try, and maybe do a review on them. I can't possibly express how crazy good they are. Maybe you could do a review on them. So good. Soooooo good. Check them out!

Great video! I started with the Cardas planar calculator recommendation and moved my speakers around from there. It takes a while to get it right but definitely worth it as no other speaker approaches what they can do for any reasonable price. If you want an easy jump in sound quality I highly recommend the "magnepan instant upgrade kit" from Verastarr/Mike Powell. It was like taking blankets off the speakers.

Thank you for this great video. For my 1.7is, 5-6 feet out rather than 3 feet out makes a profound increase to the sound stage depth and instrument separation. Base drops off but a sub makes up for that.

Rather than use 'tilt' for pointing the center of the speaker toward the center of the listening area (sweet spot), you might want to use the word 'toe in' or 'toe out' which is typical for that movement. 'Tilt' would be typically be the top of speaker moving forward or back while the bottom front edge is a fixed axis from which the top of the speaker moves in a rotational fashion (i,e, the clips on the back feet that change the angle of the speaker face toward the listening area).

Magnepans plan worked, I bought the lrs because I've always wanted to try a pair and at that price I could not argue. Those speakers were so good I ordered a pair of 3.7 I. The one setup thing I will offer is that I do not use the back wave of the magnepans. I operate out of a recording studio and I have absorption behind each speaker. Pretty amazing.

This channel just gets better & better by the day!! This was by far one of the best speaker placement guides I have ever watched on KZbin. IMHO there are far too many bla - bla -bla ers that spend hours and write books on ridiculous speaker placement methods. The Next best Thing Studio suggested methods for LRS set-up/placement will also work well with most other speakers (in my experience.) I always start with the "near field" placement 1st for reference. I will not bother experimenting with speaker placement until I believe I have the room acoustics all squared away, like acoustic panels and carpeting. In the end, I almost always wind up going back to near field placement.

Very nice video Jay. Maggies certainly are a unique speaker that rewards your careful placement within the room. I am a Magnepan dealer in the Carolinas and have both the .7 and 1.7 in my showroom. I will say that my personal preference is to sit a bit closer to the speakers than the recommended distance with the tweeters in the inside. To me this gives a wider lateral soundstage (almost a "wraparound" effect). I will also remind viewers that you should always toe-in your Maggies so that the bass section is closer to your ear than the tweeter. This preserves time coherency and will result in a better 3D image. Once you experience what these speakers can do, it is hard to go back to a traditional cone n' dome box speaker.

As a new owner of 1.7i I'm not sure I understand your toe-in advice. Mine are 40in off the front wall and 12 feet apart (120in projection screen) and I sit 12 feet away from them. My amp is a Parasound A21+. That's a triangle which would require me to toe-in at 45 degrees for time alignment if I understand correctly. I too like the tweeters to the inside for a more focused sound stage. Currently I have them at 25 degrees inward angle. Your thoughts on my room placement? Thanks

Well done, I haven’t yet tried the tweeters to the outside but certainly will as I find the sweet spot especially small but lovely. These are with no doubt the least fatiguing speakers I’ve ever heard. I’m especially sensitive to the reproduced female voice and find almost every speaker lacking except these. I still have a difficult time believing these are only $650 though I’ve heard the wait has increased to beyond four months but they are worth every minute you have to wait for these exceptional speakers.

I think it important to add that the wall distance is more about achieving a flat bass response. This generally applies to all speakers, box or panel, but the di-pole design exacerbates room mode challenges. Placing them close to the wall will reinforce some bass frequencies while causing huge dips/cancellations/nulls in others. In an Open-baffle/ di-pole design, the bass freqs wrap around the panel causing cancellations, which is why panel speakers so often sound weak in the bass and require a huge diaphragm to produce bass comparable to a couple 6" woofers. With Maggies, I found the best center imaging was achieved with the tweeters placed outboard -- strange considering Magnepan's recommendation.

More than a year ago I got a pair of Magnepan 0.7's. Bigger Magnepans could never fit into my little 500 square foot house and the 0.7 is the biggest model to use only quasi-ribbons. Pure ribbons are too fragile for me to trust them. I like SET amplifiers but a 45 triode is not powerful enough for the Magnepan so I use a 45 to transformer couple to the grid of an 833-A which at 1000 Volts is plenty of power for Magnepans to duplicate concert hall sound pressures and it sounds better than the solid state amplifier the store where I bought my speakers used to demonstrate the. Since I got my Magnepans I have heard box speakers that cost as much as $75,000 and they can't approach the refinement and realism the Magnepans give me. I am spoiled now.

I have owned the LRS's for 3 months. I have had a lot of speakers but these are the first Maggies. It takes a lot of setup time to get the speakers and room acoustics to lock in. Some of the aftermarket stands raise them up and also make them more vertical (more than the 'flippers'). The other thing you did not mention was the Magnepan recommendation that the tweeter be at least one inch further away than the base panel - being a direct measurement from the listening position. Getting the standout from the back wall, separation, listening distance, distance to tweeter, and tilt adjusted to the room takes time and is probably unique to each room. The reward is a large sound stage and deep imaging. There are still times I miss a traditional tweeter on some music but there are always trade-offs and this is a great speaker for the money.

And that’s why Maggies will always be a speaker that will appeal to a customer with a limited type of living space. For some of us, even 3 feet away puts them uncomfortably close to the listener, and if that’s the absolute minimum, there’s no room for further placement.

1:07 - which is it? - the front or back wall? 1. I've read/heard both ... But my take is ... It's the FRONT wall. It's from the orientation of you/seated position in the room. Front speakers are closer to the front wall (in front of you). Rear speakers are typically on the back wall (behind you). 2. I think HiFi should 'borrow' some terms from aviation ... Toe-in = YAW (rotation on the vertical Y(up/down) axis - nose left/right) Tilt = PITCH (rotation on the horizontal X(left/right) axis - nose up/down) ROLL in audio should be left to RockNRoll. 3. Ideally your seated position should be well off of the back wall.

The LRS need a whole redesign to achieve something resembling an accurate and flat response which they don't have anything close to in their stock form. I tried a pair of LRS and they were so colored and irregular in response that I was shocked. I've heard so much better from Magnepan. It seems you have to spend more money on their bigger and better models.

I'm looking at GR Research open baffle servo control subs. It's fast bass that plays down to 20hz.

6' from the wall provides reinforcement of the sound at about 94 Hz. (1,125 ft/sec)/12 ft = 94Hz

What was the secret? By the way just as important as speaker separation from the wall is rear wall separation from the listener.

Whaaaat? ... can't place them on the wall??? Thank you for such a good and helpful review. You included so much that most reviewers never mention. I have found that almost all speakers sound better with at least 3 feet from the front wall.

Tiddles will not be allowed in the living/ listening room unaccompanied after i own a pair of maggies, training him with "No puss, NO!!" never worked long-term & the fitted inbuilt cloths covering the front baffle boards of my vintage floor-standers have been claw-strudeled to half-way up, at least there's only a wood-baffle board behind that area & not a precision tensioned cling-film 'like' sheet with etched-on conducting strips to be sliced quickly by guarantee-voiding sharp intrusions, no way, pussay, out!

CANT mount them? Or SHOULDN'T?? Don't challenge me. The shop owner where I bought my 1.6QR's had a pair of the 1.6 mounted on his ceiling as rear surrounds. Don't tell me can't lol

You shouldn’t and Magnepan will tell you the same. They have other models for on-wall applications

Thank for the video. Now I realize there’s too much bs with these. I’m going to go with the Ohm Walsh 2000’s.

Dan Montenegro great speaker , very unique . Don’t let this video shy you away from a magnepan tho. The 6foot rule is complete nonsense..

As an LRS owner, I want to assure you, you're thinking about it all right. They're tinker toys. If you don't feel like dicking around with speakers, beyond placing them "where they go" and tweaking the toe-in a little, these could be mighty annoying.

Stop wasting your time and reserve comment until you know what your talking about. Speaking in concept rather than rattling off arbitrary "facts" makes one seem somewhat less ignorant. This would help you.
