My grandfather passed 10 years ago. He was in the Navy during the war. I miss him and wish that he had an opportunity to know his great grandkids.

Growing up in England in the 1960's the Kilroy graffiti was everywhere but I never knew, until now, the origin. What a cool story, great research by you guys!

Killroy is actually a combination of the guy with the noose and killroy who was a ship inspector

Interesting. I was aware of the graffito and its association with American soldiers in WWII, but I was not aware of its origin. It;'s kind of neat that they officially included it on the WWII monument in the way they did.

Greetings Bethany, Drew, and great fans! I remember seeing in Kelly's Heroes. Thank you for telling this story about our history! Hope everyone has a wonderful life, take care, be safe, and have great Holidays!

I was at the Memorial the week it opened, had it almost to myself on an early morning bike ride around the Tidal Basin. I had no idea about the Kilroy inscriptions back then of course, so it's cool to see them in your video. I wonder how many people think of the Styx album instead of the "graffiti" that got tagged all over the world thanks to James Kilroy. As far as first viral memes go, in the USA at least, I think "Washington slept here" might be a contender. Hope you two have a great holiday season!

I learned something I never knew. Thank you for sharing this tidbit of history. My grandfather was in the Royal Canadian Navy during the war. He might have help to escort some Kilroy's vessel across the ocean.

At first I was upset that someone would put graffiti on a WW2 monument, but after this video, I had a huge smile on my face! Such an interesting story. Thanks for sharing!

We were just there for Spring Break. Kilroy is hilarious. Also don’t buy ice cream from the food truck there. 3 soft serve ice cream with toppings was $49.50.

Oof, yeah, the ice cream was probably delicious, but sounds like a tub from the store on the way home is the way to go. 😂 Glad you guys were able to visit!

As a kid in the 60's in Los Angeles we would draw Kilroy using chalk every where, never understanding what it was, thanks.

I use to doodle that in my middle school and high school notebooks. Some of my classmates had no idea what it was or where it came from. Two of my uncles served right after the war in the rebuilding of Germany. They told me about it.

My son, Jeffrey Dimeglio, is the man who carved the Kilroy graffiti in the WWII Memorial. He also engraved Truman's quote. Sadly, he passed away late July.

Thanks for the inside info. We had this graffiti all over our college walls and places, and believed it to be one of our super senior's creation.

Fun fact the little dude associated with this has a name his name is Mr. Chad or just Chad. The whole thing is testament to allied unity as Kilroy was American but Chad is British so they merged together, and of course there is the meme aspect as well.

Sorry, still don't know the origin. Kilroy was accused of not doing his job so to prove he was doing his inspections he started "stamping" everywhere he'd been. I heard this story 45 + yrs ago.
