It's certainly a clever use of fabric and relatively versatile. I think it would be even more cool with a second pleat in the back to make if full-blown skirt on both sides when desires, but I guess that a bunch of buttons down the back would be a pain.

I guess buttons could go down the outsides of the leg, might be a solution for a full skirt 👗 it's a genius design already 🚲

Someone put a lot of thought and work into that. They remind me of coulottes. Also in the front they are a lot like skorts but way more fabric. Also when I was a teenager, in the 70s, I had a few pairs of shorts that had a little flap in the front and also in the back. My dad called them handiwipes. Lol
