Cool mod, another reason for the issues is, the humbuckers usually use 500k pots on these, while single coils generally use 250k (unless it’s a Jazzmaster/jaguar which use 1M instead.) Running a single coil through the higher resistance pots thins out the tone and volume. I have an old Ibanez Jet King and I replaced the volume point with a 300k to kind of split the difference (it has separate switches for the split), it sounds much better.
@MikeTaffet3 жыл бұрын
you're half right. If you had it somehow switch to a 250k pot, the output would be darker because more high signal could go to ground, HOWEVER, the output would be even lower. The magic of the PRS mod is that it keeps the output closer in volume.

I have a PRS and have wired the resistors in. It works OK, ish. My preferred way of wiring for coil split is leave one pickup wired this way via a push/pull pot, and as I never use the tone pot (always flat out) I've wired the other pickup so that the tone is a blend pot on it. On 10 the pickup is full humbucker and as I turn the pot down it slowly shorts one coil to earth. It allows me to dial in exactly the tone response I want. I use hot rail type pickups on my strats and have used the lower tone pots to do that for years on them. I replace the pots with push/pulls so I can also series/parallel the coils as well for that fatter sound.

Correctly speaking this is a coil dampener. Which is, as a matter of fact, not at all a split. Hence it doesnt even get close to that single coil sound you might think of when you hear a tele,strat or a P90. Its nice because its a change in sound but thats about it. Also its not prone to hum at all, of course because its still just a humbucker with one very weak coil. I know it I have a PRS SE with that in it. However your video was on the spot and its good people know about this possibility.

@mykewright1 Жыл бұрын
Yes, just connect the resistors between the coil split wires and the switch or use a double-pole switch keeping the two paths separate. You can obviously vary the resistor values and for higher DC Resistance pickups you might choose proportionately higher resistor values. You could temporarily wire the coil split wire through a pot (ideally about 25K Ohm) that's wired to ground on the other lug and find the best split sound. Then measure the resistance of the pot at that setting and use a resistor (or group of resistors) equal or close to that measure value.

Thanks for the rich content. I'm always stopping by for info. Do you know if it's possible to do this on an older PRS Swamp Ash Special? It has a bridge and neck humbucker with a single coil in the middle. These older ones use a 3 way toggle (Gibson-like), 1 vol. 1 push-pull tone. I've never seen wiring quite like it. I think the middle pickup comes on when the push-pull is in the up position. I think the humbuckers get split simultaneously as well. It's a little unusual. It does suffer from volume loss when split.

Nice trick!!! So, for split-5 wiring (split in positions 2 and 4) you can solder the resistor between the 2-wire joint and the lug of the switch. But the sound might not be satisfactory because you'll have a partially split humbucker and a true single coil (middle)? Can anyone elaborate in this?
@j.a.s.14162 жыл бұрын
Hey George a little late to the party. Not sure exactly where your talking bout with placing the resistor. But I actually think the sound would be better if you had a vintage output humbucker let's say 7k-8.5k and you split the coil it would only be about 3.5k-4.25k and would sound very thin with a huge volume drop. So if your not Trulu grounding one cool you will get a higher output closer to a true single coil 5.5k-6.5K out of your humbucker and those split positions hopefully will sound Fuller instead of thinner and weak. Now if you had a high output humbucker you wouldn't need to do this mod unless you were running an HH setup and wanted a bit more fullness on your "split coils". I do wiring harness as a hobby and definitely would recommend this for most vintage output humbuckers. Some manufacturers put more/higher winds on the split coil of humbuckers so they retain output / volume so this is very pickup based. I hope this helps.

@fen31843 жыл бұрын
Not the same. Very roughly explained? A coil split bleeds off one of the two coils to ground, leaving a weakened signal that's 'similar' in sound to a single coil. A coil tap is a specific type of coil winding where a tap wire exits the pickup at a chosen point in the winding, but the winding then continues until it reaches its final number of winds before exiting; allowing you to switch between the two different values.

Hi, thanks for the comment! I'm not a big fan of the rotary switch (had an old PRS and always took forever to find the right PU position on stage) so I'd replace it with a 3-way toggle. Even more so, now that you have the two push-pulls for the coil-split. BUT. Only if you can install a toggle switch, if you don't have to mod the guitar's routing. And of course keep the original rotary switch to be able to restore the guitar's original state at any point. If you want to stick to the rotary switch, you could do this: humbucker and coil-split tones with the rotary and series-parallel with the push-pulls. Or even in phase / out-of-phase with the push pulls. It's a little over the top, but you might find some really inspiring tones there. Cheers //Kris

PRS itself doesn't use rotary switches any more, so probably they weren't so convinced either... 😅

Does the resister effect the humbucker's output when it is in series? The humbucker in series after adding the resister seemed a little quieter.
@ClaudioMartella Жыл бұрын
no, when the switch is not pull, the resistor is not in the circuit

I've added added a variable Coil split. Les Paul hb, master tone and you get a free pot

Quick question : doesnt the resistance cause the whole wiring to heat up or is the power that it generates too weak to cause any damage?
@dt9r3 жыл бұрын
No worry, there's no danger

Man it's millivolts, the amount of energy produced by pickups is next to zero.

So basically just solder the resistor in where the push pull goes to ground instead of a wire?
@ThomannsGuitarsBasses2 жыл бұрын
Yep, it's that simple. Just have to find the right resistor value for your guitar. Cheers //Kris

Hi, i tried this with my new Roswell LAF pickups and it works flawlessly, but i got another problem. When the pickups are split i get the hum with switch in middle positon, is there any way to solve this?

Guitar is Harley Benton SC500 with two push-pull pots in place of Tone potentiometers.

can this also be done with a bass guitar with 2 humbuckers?
@ThomannsGuitarsBasses2 жыл бұрын
If the humbuckers split and you don't want to loose output, then absolutely yes. Cheers //Kris

@@ThomannsGuitarsBasses thanks for the answer. I was thinking, would a series /parallel switch do the same job?

Does it work if I use 2 470k resistors @thomann's?
@ThomannsGuitarsBasses5 ай бұрын
Hi, that value is very far from what works for this coil-split trick unfortunately. Try to stick to the values mentioned in the video. You can find these resistors online or in electronic shops and they are really not expensive. Cheers //Kris

no, when the pot is pushed the mod is out of the circuit

Great video. On thing to share: notice that a 24 fret double humbucker will always have a more "strat quack" in the middle position, with one or both pickups split, compared to a 22 fret guitar. This is because on a 24 fret guitar, the pickups are closer to each other. Let's keep this to ourselves 😄
@mykewright1 Жыл бұрын
If the coil nearest the neck is the live one when split, rotating the pickup will also help get more quack. It shouldn't have any major impact while in full humbucker mode unless you've adjusted the pole piece heights and you only have adjustable ones on that coil.

A diagram and a less faster take on how to do it would help to better understand what you did.

I don't have a diagram but I do have an episode about coil-splitting humbuckers: kzbin.info/www/bejne/laGYnJ57nJJ-mpI Hope that helps. Cheers //Kris
