Speaking as a driving instructor this is the best video for advice I’ve seen. So many rumours scare people. Don’t treat it as a test but a 40 minute assessment and the driving examiner is your driving instructors second opinion. Thanks for this video Chris. A lot of drivers don’t believe me when I say you just need to demonstrate a safe drive.

The driving test is all down to luck of the day. No matter how good of a driver you are, something can come out of nowhere on the test and the examiner can tick the serious box for such a minor thing. I did my first driving test 2 weeks ago and failed on the final road to the test center by going over give way line by an inch on a very tight corner nearly impossible to do without experience. No cars did the "3 S's stop, slow down and or swerve." Plus my examiner kept touching the pedals on the dual controls without any good reason! I brought my driving instructor with me, he was in the back even he said should of passed the test!
@connoroneill46015 жыл бұрын
I’m my opinion yes I agree, some tests can be more difficult and some things may happen in one test that does not happen in another. But at the end of the day you are there to prove you can handle ANY situation that you may come across on the road. So yes sometimes things come out of nowhere but you still have to show that you come overcome the problems safely.

While I agree to an extent, you "should" also be a good enough driver that in unexpected situations you can figure out what to do and get through it safely. Of course, most people (myself definitely included) book their test earlier and just hope nothing bad happens.

On my test, the examiner told me to take the first exit at the roundabout. Obviously I put my left indicator on and got in the left lane out of the three lanes. But for some reason I forgot where I was going and thought for a second I had to follow the road ahead. I remembered last minute and ended up swerving slightly into the first exit. I thought I had failed but really I had only got a minor for steering because if I had gone ahead with my left indicator on I would have caused an accident and failed. So yeah definitely don't assume you've failed unless of course you ran someone over or something.

Also. If you are the type of person to think. "Damn it I've failed. There's no point even driving anymore." Try to think of it this way. "Damn I've failed. No need to feel nervous anymore. May aswell carry on driving." And maybe that "fail" that will cause you to become relaxed as you think the rest of the test doesn't matter. Becomes the only minor incident you get. I say this because my first driving test. I was like I've failed 100% and after that point everything became less stressful and I drove amazingly the rest of the way. (Turns out I did fail. But after that point. I had like 0 minors. and if it was a minor I would have passed) I hope any of that made sense haha

Tip #2 is very relevant. There was a couple of moments when I thought i may had ruined my chances - I moved on, kept calm & continued on safely. My tip would be to make sure you have the basics covered - make sure your eyesight is good, learn the show/tell questions, ensure your basic road theory knowledge is good - you don't want to worry about the small things on test day. Having the basics clear from your mind means you can concentrate on driving well during the test.

I ended up failing my driving test with three serious faults, and four minor faults. My issue is undue hesitation, especially at busy roundabouts. At first, I did not understand why hesitating is a bad thing, but now I know that it can cause dangerous situations at junctions. Some other road user could recklessly overtake me at a roundabout while I'm waiting in a panic for a massive gap, and more will be honking in frustration. In my next test, I will have to ensure that I don't hesitate unnecessarily. Does/did anybody else have this problem as a learner?

I passed my driving test a few days ago with 3 minors. Tip 1 and 2 are so important! I almost failed during the independent drive, as I had to turn right at the crossroads, but the right was not your standard right and I got so focused on that, I didn't notice the other traffic and had to brake very harshly. I braked just before the examiner, so only got a minor, but I thought I had failed my test at the moment. I also thought I had failed at other moments. For example, I had the turn in the road and cars approached from both directions and I proceeded with caution. After I finished, the examiner started writing stuff down, so I thought I had done something wrong and failed there, but it turns out he was just marking the turn in the road box to indicate we had done it! So definitely don't assume you've failed, anticipate, scan the road and don't assume the examiner is writing bad things!

I’ll tell you the secret... An examiner that likes you and is having a good day. Luck. And to be an ok driver. I’m angry at this test because I’ve failed twice and I deserve a pass. There wouldn’t be videos like this, teasing about a secret, playing on the fact that reasons why so many fail is mysterious and elusive. Not to discredit this channel, which is very helpful and great. You would almost think there is some secret out there since clearly; being a sensible person that knows how to drive is not good enough. I know, that they are indeed there to catch you out, not all, but most. 47% average fail rate. 52% of instructors tell their pupils they are ready to drive safely alone and pass up on the chance of getting more cash from lessons. I do not think so. I think that there should be no test. But compulsory lessons with instructors who are examiners who are with you for hours, they know you well and can make a true informed decision about when you can drive and are ready to do so.

very well written mate, and people like me who often get performance anxiety do stupid things just because we're nervous. Also, some of the things they call 'driving faults' is ridiculous, for example one driving fault is waiting for too long to enter a roundabout, but unless you miss like 3 chances to go all you're doing is waiting for it to be completely safe before you enter

Couple of tips for you that really helped me pass 1st time. Whereever you live isn't the area which you have to take your test. I live in Birmingham, but a lot of the test centres around Birmingham have low pass rates. Me and my wife decided to combine my driving test with a weeks holiday in the Scottish Highlands (stunning part of the world) . I did my test at Gairloch driving centre, which has a 1st time pass rate of 86.5%. Obviously you'll need to know the roads around the test centre quite well, so legally using my wifes car as a learner I did a couple of hours a day for 4 days before the test to familiarise myself with the area. Secondly, try and take a test on the evening. Pass rates between 7pm and 9pm are significantly higher (over 70% nationwide) than morning or afternoon tests. I took my test at 7:30pm in summer, so the light was still excellent, but the roads were quieter. I passed the test with 1 minor fault (debateable according to the wife who was in the back!). I get that some people might find this approach immoral or even cheating the system, but it really isn't. I did slightly over 50 hours worth of lessons and around 20 hours worth of seperate practice learning how to drive. My instructor was highly confident in my driving ability and knew I was more than ready for a test. The problem was that I was so nervous just thinking about taking the test. I took advantage of the system and we also had a lovely holiday!

tip 2 made me laugh a lot- the inner monologue was too relatable and he sounds like Bear Grylls. This was really helpful though! Love it :D

Thank you Chris, i passed my test today. this is the best channel for learning to driving. i have watched all your videos and they helped me alot. Before going for my test this morning, i watched this video countless times. I ensured i anticipated and planned head. My parallel parking did not go as planned and thought there and then i had failed, although i parked, observations were good. however, i decided to continue and not pay attention to the mistake i did. The relief when i the examiner told me i PASSED!! so over the moon....Thank you Chris, continue making this informative videos. Now over to the next step- motorways....: :) :) :)

Best small piece of advice I've heard, especially for bikers is that the only thing and flashing indicator shows is that the bulb is working. Always wait for a vehicle to start turning before making a move

Such great advice, the last advice you have to show one more person is so true, after all you have to drive on your own and be safe anyway so in a sense you have to prove to yourself that you are good at all situations. I guess like anything its constant practice and experience and knowing what to do in different situations. My dad always said you become a great driver after you passed your test as you gain more knowledge. A lot also seems observation and looking at whats going on around you so staying safe. I am terrible in test situations same whatever test I do 🙄

Yep. Once, I was on the bus, and an impatient van driver was behind the bus. There was another bus on the opposite lane and the van driver was SOOOO impatient, he literally drove straight on the foot path, and this was on a BEND by the way. Oh God, what if there was a pedestrian round that corner...?
@MythicSuns5 жыл бұрын
@@SilverHunterN during one of my earlier driving lessons I saw this daft driver in a people carrier drive straight out of a T junction without even stopping to look. My guess is it was one of those mothers who thinks her car becomes invincible whenever her kids need picking up from school.

should always try to park a large vehicle away as best as possible to an intersection. sometimes it just has to go that way. I drive I break rules just to do my job, never in a dangerous manner but still there is always a risk and being a large vehicle literally everything is your fault..
