I can't draw people to save myself, but your technique is a revolution! I gave it a go and first off, recognisable people beautifully proportioned. Thanks for the simple and very clear technique!

I know this video is from 7 months ago, but in case you're still needing a tip on Tombow markers... You can use a paint brush with water to help blend them, like you would with watercolor. They're basically concentrated watercolors in marker form. Also, you can blend them by using color one, then color two, then color one again. This helps a lot with gradients. Hope this was helpful for you or anyone else reading this! Love your work, I'm inspired to loosen up in my sketches since I usually white knuckle the pen lol

Thanks Kimber for the idea! That’s actually something that I should try. Now that it’s been some time I can go back and test with some brushes 👍🏼

Hello Scottie... "saves the day" - because you already saved mine!!! Allow me to explain... This is Jim, a New Yorker living in Madrid, Spain, a newbei and learning in the Art World... One if my biggest and profound issues has always been drawing/sketching people!! For real!!! I found you almost by chance a few days ago and I immediately subscribed to your channel!!! For the first time in my whole life someone has given me the knowledge in a comprehensive way for me to understand "Human Proportions" and in a way that I can apply them... so, THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!! For real! You have a NEW subscriber for good! High fives from Madrid!!! (And, if you don't mind, I'll recommend your channel to others who struggle like me on this topic).

Looking good Scottie. Love seeing the evolution of your approach, I remember it only being a few months when you began adding light ink washes to the linework & now some bold expressive color. Keep on experimenting, trying out what's best for you. Congrats on the success of the channel growth. You deserve it, putting in the work!

I honestly think the same, this is more useful because not all bodies are the same and it's hard to make 9 or more heads just to start a quick sketch

Something I've started doing is preserving the line work by using a light board to transfer the sketch onto another sheet of paper. At the point where the .3 fine liner went over the pencil would have been a good point to transfer the image onto a separate sheet of paper. That way you can experiment with many different coloring techniques on the same image. Since you are uncertain about the marker you could go back with watercolor, ink washes, etc. A light board allows you to transfer the image onto many different styles of paper as well.

Excellent tips and a great demonstration. I like the highlights of the Tombow markers as an alternative to watercolour. Maybe a "value fill": might be interesting too, as this would give the depth and feeling through the contrasting values of say sanguine, greys (cool and warm) and sepia maybe.

You can scribble the tombows on plastic/acetate/etc and just use a waterbrush or paintbrush to mix colors. Basically like watercolor paint to get right colors. Thanks for your informative videos. They even re-wet if you use a palette and they dry. I do that with stamp pad ink also(water based)

This is helpful, thanks. Funny, when I use markers like Tombow it bugs me when they don’t blend well (surely my inexperience? Or maybe I just prefer watercolor?) or show the marker lines, but it doesn’t bother me at all when I see it in the work of others. I figure it’s their style and it works for them. I think yours turned out great!

Thanks Jill! 😊 Glad you found it helpful. Yea I think markers can be a bit hit or miss sometimes! With these markers I had to be really careful not add too much ink or the paper started to peal off.

Your sketch looks great and I find the way you use to put on paper the proportions of the reference very effective. Unfortunately I can't offer any advice on markers' colour blending. The reason why I don't use this type of markers is that I 've never managed to make them blend properly. I assume that the only way to make alcohol or water based ink markers blend decently is to use a paper made for markers, with very hard sizing that keeps the marker ink on the surface in order to be reactivated when you apply a second colour. Or perhaps watercolour markers that can be diluted with water. But if you are going to use watercolour markers than why not use light washes of watercolours??!!

If they are water-based. Is it not better to use watercolor paper and use some water just like if you where using watercolors? :) For blending I mean
@SketchingScottie

That's a good point! Maybe blending with a brush and water could work👍🏼. I tried blending directly with the pens on watercolor paper but the pen tip seems to still rough up the paper instead of blending the ink.

The color is too strong for my taste, over powering the line work i.e an illustration rather than a sketch. I prefer weak ink washes applied with a brush to maintain prominence in the line work…to each their own. Excellent information on proportion…thx!

@@SketchingScottie I think water colour or very diluted gouache would work. With gouache you can make it opaque if you want and do highlights. Not as portable for urban art sketching though. Is it possible to experiment with Tombow's and just dip the nibs in water to wash them out before applying ? You could carry a small vial of water with you for urban work.
