I've worked ‘em at McClellan AFB in the early 80’s. I’m a retired major air carrier aircraft maintenance technician. I've worked a lot of different aircraft in civilian and military domains. The A-10 is a mechanic’s dream and the best aircraft I’ve ever worked. Period.

The A-10 is a masterpiece of aviation engineering. And definitely the most feared plane in the world. The legendary Burr from its gun makes any enemy freeze in there tracks and know it’s all over. There is no replacement for the A-10

Reliance on overly sophisticated technologies is dangerous in the era of advanced electronic warfare. The DOD would be making a serious mistake even continuing to consider retiring the A10. It can do things the 35, 16, 22, 18 (or any other existing us military aircraft) just can’t do. Pure folly to doubt its relevance and the need to retain mechanical flight capabilities. I say build more, and to original specs. They’re cheap to build and maintain, compared to the new generation fighting birds. Keeping good A10 pilots is more important. Keep a fat supply of them, just in case. *Keep them hacker-proof!!* Keep them. Period.

I was trained and maintained the Comm/Nav, Electronic Warfare, and Weapons Release systems of the A-10. Was a Weapons Loader also. Out of my 32+ years in the Air Force the A-10 was the best plane to work. Our unit was just one of many that were constantly being thanked by Army and Marine personnel for the protection the A-10 provided for them. If retired more ground troops will lose their lives because the F-35 cannot, and has been proven not to, protect ground forces like the A-10. Semper Defendat!

It needs to prove that it can successfully avoid shoulder launched anti-aircraft missiles; which it has virtually never faced before. Everyone who analyzes the A-10 in the modern Ukraine battlefield with such missiles reports that they expect 100% of them to be shot down in 2-4 days. The A-10 was a fantastic aircraft that has served us extremely well for many decades.... but technology has come up with an answer for it. It would not survive or be very usable in a modern battle. The battleships, and many other weapon systems, were retired for many of the same reasons.

The A-10A is a special tool ....a tool that no other Aircraft (including the F-35A) can replace. The Air Force's F-35A doesn't possess the low altitude agility of the A-10A and neither does the F-16 (in any variation). Having an aircraft capable of turning as tight as the A-10A is critical in CAS roles, as the A-10A makes an attack run it can literally turn around without losing track of it's targets and then re-engaging it. The USMC F-35B can hover, which is used for VTOL Ops and would create a static target (which is worse than a 400+MPH jet), while the Navy F-35C has a longer wingspan and can fly at slower speeds for carrier operations...I don't know how capable it would be at replacing the A-10A as a agile aircraft. Then comes the durability.....yeah, nothing compares to the A-10A and as far as radar and AAA threats, that's what the USAF Wild Weasels and USN F/A-18 Growler's are for, to clear the enemy radar while the F-22, F/A18 E/F, F-15, F-16 and F-35A&C keep air dominance. Then the A-10A Owns the ground....from the Mountain tops to the Beach and everything that walks, crawls or claws and every peice of armor, helicopter, transport or slow moving aircraft. Anyone who thinks about removing a tool like the A-10A needs to SERIOUSLY remember to evaluate the new tool's effectiveness to the tool you want to replace, because a fast jet that takes 3 miles to turn and can be shot down with a PKMG or a PKP Pecheneg is not a suitable solution.

The two together cover the bases. The argument when they initially decided to phase out the A-10 was that next gen fighters could take out the A-10. How about an F-35 escort for a couple or 3 A-10s? As for the question of what is better, allocating funds to the F-35 or keeping the E-10, in my humble opinion, keeping a relatively cheap aircraft for ground support is better than taking it out of service and assigning the close ground support tasks to an expensive aircraft like the F-35. Keeping both aircraft in service will save financial allocations and will not burden the F-35 with other tasks. This is my opinion.
