I would never pay these ridiculous original art prices. If I did it would only be from Jim Lee or Todd McFarlane. Best way to get beautiful photos to frame are those artist portfolios. These sales are getting wild. Wonder how long this can go before the market collapses? It also brings into question how creators should be compensated. Lots of money out there but it doesn't go to creators. Should there be a guild or something?
@AnthonyOldhandGarcia2 жыл бұрын
Interesting that you say that the way i post look at is that no one knows in general nor the artist themselves that create the characters and the story telling can know what their work is worth and that's kind of a gamble where collectors think what's hot because of the pop culture as it's grown due to movies and merchandise, however where investors or collectors with deep pockets seem to manipulate the comicbook market by seeing what makes the most money as far as the rarity or a particular comicbook art that may have an appeal to it that can be valued to where the investors whom aren't collectors themselves see the comicbook market at a all time high just to get that comicbook that they may think it's the comicbook to get as suppose to regular collectors who can't afford it when it's out of their reach. And who knows as Gem mentioned these investors with lots of money are probably taking advantage of buying high end artworks for for tax purposes, and the way i look at it personally no comicbook shouldn't be worth and sold for millions of dollars when it's not that of serious book of course then again the rarity and condition of the book is what makes it special like 1939 Superman #1 which is understandable being a golden age comicbook. But for bronze age comicbook like Secret Wars #8 25 page panel of Spider-Man wearing the black suit of the origin story isn't worth millions in my opinion that's just ridiculous honestly. Manipulation i like to think so due to the comicbook community in the market raise the price because of some bronze age rare original art. Bleh. 🙄

You mean a union? Lol
@thebandwagonfanpodcast2 жыл бұрын
@@woozie_ztfo9285 No, I mean a guild, like The Writer's Guild of America. There's a lot of legal red tape that prevents this due to antitrust laws from the 1940s. Some creators tried this in the 70s and 80s but the legal stuff was too tricky.
@thebandwagonfanpodcast2 жыл бұрын

Most artists are allowed to keep the original art and do with it as they please. For example Todd Mcfarlane says he still has all his original art. I don't know whether this was the practice at the time this was drawn but if it was the artists sold it and already got his compensation his decision he should have held on to it.

The majority of the iconic original comic art is owned by a very small handful of people. There are new players as older pieces owned outside of that sphere come to auction, but much is already owned by a small group. Want proof? Assume the comic art market is much like the art market, these items are now major investments, good to see. Be great to see more and more of these original art pages recognised by the major galleries, I would love to see some Brian Bolland, Dave McKean etc hanging on the walls of the Tate galleries in the UK etc. No problem with people buying what they want but original art pages are generally not for me (have a small collection of very under-powered pages). People are willing to spend 400 million etc on a work of art, why not on brilliant comic book art as well

Well, I was completely taken back by the Spidey art sale. Quite frankly, I would question the authenticity of the sale except for the fact that it was through Heritage? While I get it is the first page appearance in the book with the symbiote black costume (which subsequently becomes Venom), Spidey in the black costume is also on that cover, so to me that is his first appearance (on the cover). I could maybe understand $3.36 million for the cover, but for that page? From an art standpoint, a relatively substandard page in my opinion! There is no background work in the panel - it’s nothing more than a very basic drawing of Spidey (nothing against Mike Zeck, I like his work but this is nothing special.)

As crazy as this price looks, I've always wondered why comic art doesn't sell for more than it does, especially with the market as it is now for comics. The art is true one of a kind. I'm less surprised by this than some of the comic prices we've been seeing, tbh.
