Secret Worship by Algernon Blackwood

Only other unabridged recording of this classic John Silence story seems to be the Librivox one which leaves a lot to be desired. I've never seen this old reading uploaded, so it might be of use to some.

New Orleans, July 2020. I discovered Blackwood's stories when we were still in NYC, and took batches of books on our 1200 mile drive.. with us - including all my mystery/horror collections. SECRET WORSHIP is an all time favorite - John Silence a compelling character. It is indeed, classic. Moreover, at 72, I am of the generation who believes classic works such as this do not benefit from criticism leveled by younger listeners. They simply should be appreciated for what they are: excellently written tales, OF THEIR TIME AND PLACE. Not sure who "Mary Sue' is, or what purpose another ending might have served. These have stood the test of time, and will endure, without snarky comments from youngsters. Sincerest thanks for the recording. I'll admit I gave a quick listen to several other versions - but yours caught my ear as clearly the best. Cheers from the French Quarter...

Thank you for having the good taste to upload this. A masterful Blackwood story rendered perfectly. An utter joy, despite the hopeful ending.

Yeah, that ending is kinda awful. The portion after the protagonist enters the monastery is excellent, like a nightmare that slowly increases in intensity, but then Blackwood had to have his superhero Mary Sue do his thing. Both this story and Ancient Sorceries would've been better without John Silence in them.
