Oh my god, between :35 and :45, that move just brings tears. I'm 72, and watched his races on a little b&w tv. He made me weep then, he still does. There are so many great horses, but I can't believe there was ever such a one as much needed by our nation (maybe Seabiscuit); thank you, Secretariat, for setting foot on this earth.

After 39 years they have now established that Secretariat ran the Preakness in 1:53 flat. So Secretariat now holds all three Triple Crown race records. Justice has been done. R.I P. Secretariat.

Even as I rewatch these famous clips from the original race it brings a tear to my eyes again to see him run. It was a truly magical time when I remember this from the early '70s. I wish you younger folks could have seen Secretariat run because he was amazing and he was a magnificent horse.

I thought this race was one of his most spectacular wins...even though something even greater was yet to come...this Preakness was amazing. He was certainly a once-in-a-lifetime horse. Gosh, I miss the 1970s so much...what a wonderful time for horse racing. I am so grateful that I was around to see this stuff when it happened because it I wasn't, i never would have believed a horse could possibly be that great.

Laffit was definitely "befuddled". I like Turcotte saying "If that's the way wants to do it, I ain't gonna argue with him, he's too big!" Classic! What a magnificent horse! I was seven years old when this happened, but I remember it well!

Pincay was one of the best to ever ride a horse. He and Sham were great competitors for Big Red and probably brought out the best in Secratariat. We can always be greatful to Pincay for that.

You got to love Penny Tweety. She was a lovely woman who was the perfect owner for the greatest horse ever. To describe her in a word it would be class. I don't think there would have been as much fanfare if another person owned Secretariat. Glad they finally resolved the discrepancy in the winning time. I'd like to give props to Sham as well. He was born in the wrong year. Had Big Red not been in any of these races we would be talking about how great Sham really was.

i love Turcotte's attitude...he seems embarrassed to accept any praise whatsoever offered by the announcers....he knows he was a passenger ;-)

i love how at 6:32 when Frank Wright says, " and tails is all they get to see of this horse anymore" so true, so true, what an amazing athlete Secretariat was...how i wish i could have seen him before his untimely death....

This was the best movie! I was only one at the time but I would've been a "Big Red" groupie!!

Laffit Pincay pretty much knew that he couldn't beat Secretariat. He whipped Sham a couple of times with his left hand but Turcotte kept his whip up on Secretariat and never hit him once in the stretch. Pincay alludes to it in his interview with Chic Anderson. I'm sure at that point Laffit was thinking to himself "what the hell" and probably knew that Secretariat was too much horse for Sham.

A "losing" coin-toss, CF! Just think of that. :D He had that "freight-train" look about him this time as he switched on his motor. What a star he was. :-)

Lest we forget, Mrs. Tweedy brought two horse, Riva Ridge and Secretariat, in two successive years to these races and the Meadows Team took home 5 out of those 6 first place Triple Crown wins. Grandpa Chenery was a genious. Also, people did not know at the time the importance of the dam in the breeding programs. An Australian researcher discovered and proved the link between excessive heart sizes in most all of the great racehorses and their Mommy's only a couple of decades ago.

@3dog9ty Sham was a great horse and in most any other years he may have won the Triple Crown. He just happened to be a 3 year old the same year as one of the greatest horses of all time. Laffit Pincay was a great jockey but you can tell in his interview with Chic Anderson he knew he didn't have enough horse to compete with Secretariat.

@3dog9ty Turcotte did not run Secretariat at his best that day at Old Hill Top. He was coasting and had plenty left without a whip taken to him.Secretariat had no ideal who was behind him. He went 1:52 3/5 through the 1 3/16 mile post in the Belmont and a unbelievable 1:51 3/5 in the Marlboro Cup 'Pulling Up'. both them races was not touch with the whip. How about that. Hard telling just how lightning fast this brute of a horse was and done this as a 3 yr. old still growing.

@starzinliberty That's my feeling too.... they're using 4 different horses because one can't possibly do all the running. One is a filly. It's his presence, his size, his aura. I just hope the movie works.
