I was 14 years old that fateful day in 1973. We had a family meal and gathering. The race was on and soon captures everyone's attention. I remember looking around the room and seeing all the people's Jaws dropped open! I cheered for Secretariat that day and he has been my hero ever since. I still love and miss him.

Jack Nicholas was all alone in his living room weeping while watching Secretariat, who was all alone on the Belmont racetrack, winning the definitive, ne le plus ultra Triple Crown. I don't think Jack Nicholas was sad - I think he was amazed & astounded.

Love Lauren's instructions to Turcotte before the Belmont: "Just leave him alone. Put him on a long hold and let him run his own race." It truly is a shame that we couldn't see him run at 4. He was just hittin' his prime.

I agree, I think as a four-year-old, and I am not of any knowledge with horses, but this horse was not done yet, I think he would have been an amazing 4&5 year old , assuming he did not get hurt. We will never see the like of an animal like him again. He truly was one of a kind.

I believe it was after trainer Lucien Lauren put the blinkers on Secretariat, we saw what this horse could do! Horses have panoramic vision. Perhaps the blinkers gave him a bit of tunnel vision? Remember, this was an amazing thinking horse. He posed for pictures when he heard a camera click! With blinkers on, he could keep a better focus on the track and not the world around him. This is my observation, I could be wrong. However, the rest is history. RIP Secretariat. You and that big heart of yours continue to give to this day.

To the uneducated............NOT steroids! Secretariat had a very large heart. It weighed 22 pounds, compared to 18 for a "normal" thoroughbred. This allowed for a much greater flow of oxygen, thus allowing him to be able to do what he did. But....he had the attitude and the "want-to" also. Without that, the heart wouldn't have mattered that much:)

Only because Martin had told Pincay to stay close to Secretariat all the way. Secretariat had Sham burned at the 6 furlong marker. If Secretariat hadn't been in that race or the other two, I'm convinced Sham would have been a TC winner.
