The owner said Turcotte would never asked the horse break out so early in the race. It must've been what the horse wanted and that he seemed to want to dictate his own strategy. I love the story about S. watching a jet plane fly over.

The amazing thing is he went from last the first in about 10 seconds but he did it so early in the race that most horses would’ve ran out of gas Ronnie never pulled out the whip while sham was getting whipped to death. 48 years later he still owns every Triple Crown record and forget the Belmont nobody will ever touch that big red is the best

If I'm not mistaken he ran every 1/4 mile faster than the previous 1/4 mile in this race. In other words he got faster as the race continued. Just amazing.

A lot of people like the Preakness or Belmont as his greatest race but I personally think his greatest race was the Derby. He broke last or very close to last, ran every quarter mile faster than the previous, ran about 3/4s of the race 3 or 4 lanes off the rail and Turcotte only hit him with the whip a couple of times on the final turn to keep him from drifting too far out into the centre of the track - and he crushed Northern Dancer’s 11 year old race record doing it. He must have been an amazing horse to ride and you could see it best in the Belmont and Canadian International. In his last race Kennedy Road’s jockey must have completely missed the message in the Belmont because he tried to run Secretariat into the ground but it was all over when Eddy Maple pushed the go button.

That move Secretariat made was epic. Honestly I feel bad for Sham. He was a great horse and ran 3 great races. The Kentucky Derby and Preakness were basically match races between him and Secretariat. This is The Preakness. Look how far in front of the 3rd place horse he finished. He beat the 3rd place horse by about the same amount in the Kentucky Derby too. In the Belmont he was running nose to nose with Secretariat for half the race. He even pulled ahead of him at one point. Unfortunately halfway through the race he broke that bone and had to quit. But what sucked was if you watch the races, Pincay beat him relentlessly in every race. He never stopped beating him with his whip. He was just pushed way too hard. He was trying to beat Secretariat, which was probably impossible, and ultimately broke the horse. Ron Turcotte said that over the course of all 3 races he only used his whip one time and that was coming down the stretch of the Kentucky Derby and he only used it to change leads…not to make him go faster.
@Psyfi85
@Psyfi85 Жыл бұрын
Once he hit that first turn he took control, a train wasn’t slowing him down. As for Sham I agree, he was clearly the 2nd best horse by a lot. Pincay went too far and broke his stride continuously, by Belmont he was battered, beaten (literally, figuratively). He always kept running hard regardless of circumstances, Red was just unbeatable. Just learned that Risen Star is buried next to Sham, definitely made my day.

You forget, Sham basically finished last in the Belmont, so he ran 2 great races with Secretariat, not 3, the pace set by Secretariat basically beat him into the ground, and remember, Secretariat won by more then 25 lengths, no horse ran a great race with Secretariat that day! The move from last to first in at the first turn of the Preakness was the greatest accomplishment in sports history, it was incredible!
@Whoopdido777
@Whoopdido777 Жыл бұрын
@@nfpnone8248 Well although I’ve never actually seen an interview or read anything saying so, I think Pincay knew Sham was done halfway through, couldn’t beat Secretariat anyway and there might actually have been something physically wrong with him, so he made the conscious decision to ease him back. It was probably the only good decision he made during those 3 races.

Secretariat ran with a lighter work load, aluminium shoes, better diet and veterinary care and most importantly, he ran on tracks that were lightning fast compared to the surfaces in 1919 and 1920. There is no way to compare these horses because the conditions they ran under were so different.

@@bencovington1121 He did. He started to pull him back about halfway through. Basically right at at the point when you see Secretariat start to pull away is when Pincay started to pull Sham back. None of these Secretariat Preakness videos show or tell there was a huge scoreboard at the 2nd turn at Pimloco that shielded the race field from the grandstand viewers from the race for 40 or so yards of racing. Secretariat went behind that scoreboard dead last, and came out a length and 1/2 ahead. It was amazing to view in person. The drama of the field disappearing behind the scoreboard and reappearing with last being first was amazing.

In this race it instantly looked like the other 4 horses went to slow motion once BIG RED swung outside. Because the horses were in such a tight group the old tech camera was able to show the rapid unearthly speed BIG RED put on. I wish the old camera was up to today's standards or that the footage could be cleaned up without destroying it. But the astonishing MAGIC of SECRETARIAT LIVES ON. Thank you, Truly Epic!

It's his endurance, not speed, that set him apart. Yes, of course he was fast, but he could maintain it, and not only maintain but go to a very high speed and simply stay there. The Belmont is the greatest example of that but you see it here as well. There is zero slowing down. Zero.

Terrific race but big deal on tje stolen time. Horses on noone's top 100 list tied the "official unofficial" record that stood, ams they actually wanted, until those who tied came along. But his connections couldn't have the horse they're pushing to be the greateat and.outdo THE greatest, Man O'War, tie, omg, imagine. He was a great and beautiful horse but I sincerely doubt Swiss Skydiver is better than Count Fleet and Citation, not to mention, Secretariat. It's ashame.his connections and fans ruin his legacy.
