“But here comes Secretariat!” … among the most thrilling phrases in sports history

Just still amazed watching him take the lead. That just wasn't normal the way he made the turn. He should of been coasting, but he was accelerateing.

Secretariat was a man among boys. He literally toyed with the other horses. There will never be another horse like him, at least not in my lifetime.

My family was in the race horse business and I remember us watching this race at home. I was nine years old. When Secretariat made his big last to first move coming out of the first turn, my father exclaimed in disgust that the rider was costing Secretariat the race. "What does he think he's riding, a superhorse, he asked?" Once Secretariat put Sham away, my mom answered him. "I guess he is a super horse."

I saw it live in 1973, and so glad I did. There has never been and never will be a horse to equal Secretariat, at least not in the life time of anyone that is alive today. No doubt whatsoever, in my mind, the greatest horse ever, bar none.

The speed of Secretariat is just Unbelievable. Seeing him pull all the way from the back is just like he knew it was time to step on it. Amazing!

At 2:14, I love how Big Red looks directly at the camera after he's put in the gate. It's like he's telling us, "Don't worry, I've got a handle on this one!" What an awesome horse he was!!

OMG what a beautiful and wonderful horse! I remember watching all three races and getting goose bumps everytime! Secretariat's time was changed for the Preakness last year (I believe)! Secretariat now has all three records! I don't believe we will ever see a horse like this again!

It took 40 years for them to get the necessary digital software to replay the Preakness to realize that secretariat ran it in 1:53 not 1:55. Thank God they figured it out.

"But here comes Secretariat! He's moving fast and he's going to the outside, he's going for the lead- and it's right now that he's looking for it." - Probably one of the top sports calls in all sports history. The jump from Secretariat (from dead last) is so impressive that the camera can't even pick it up b/c he was so far behind.

They'll never be another horse that can hold onto the lead for that long and win by 2 1/2 lengths. What a beautiful animal! That acceleration was like nothing I've ever seen in my life. Thank you so much for this wonderful footage
@TwoSlew11 жыл бұрын
He definitely did not run in a minute and fifty-five...you can tell he went faster than that. No Preakness has ever been run like that, and Ronnie didn't even have to use his whip...unheard of today. Today they beat the horses throughout the entire length of the stretch right up to the finish line. This animal was amazing!!!

At 2:59 you can see Secretariat make the move to the outside and ine the next 1 1/2 furlongs he goes from the very back to neck and neck. It's amazing. You almost wonder what is wrong with the other horses because they seem to be standing still.
@govrom1210 жыл бұрын
That was one helluva ride by Ron Turcotte. He put Secretariat into the lead with that burst of speed in the backstretch and then hand rode him in the stretch to the wire. Man, I felt for Laffit Pincay. He had a great horse in Sham but he had to know he was up against a legend and couldn't do anything to win.
@SuperBeatlesguy11 жыл бұрын
There's a great description of this race(actually,all of his races) in William Nack's book. Nack talks about Ecole Etage's jockey seeing a shadow and not knowing exactly who it was. Then suddenly he could hear the nostrils and he glanced to his side and saw the blue and white silks of Secretariat blowing by him! The Red Ball Express!

His huge heart wasn't the only thing different about Secretariat. Many people who saw him up close commented about the look in Secretariat's eyes. It was like he understood what was going on around him, as well as what was being said about him. He knew what he was supposed to do on the track, that is finish ahead of the other horses. I think he was smarter than the average horse, not just the strongest horse. Didn't matter who the other horses were either, Secretariat was going beat them all.
@dsfddsgh14 жыл бұрын
Poor Sham would probably win the Triple crown in almost any other year. He was a great horse but came along in the wrong year. He probably ran the second fastest time ever at the Kentucky Derby at the time but still lost. As it is his time is still probably the third fastest ever.
@dsfddsgh10 жыл бұрын
I didn't know that the Maryland Racing Commission had finally decided to make Secretariat's time official and he now owns the record for that race too. As if he needed anything else to prove he was perhaps the greatest horse ever owning all 3 Triple crown records says it all.
@nameofthepen15 жыл бұрын
So fabulous! Sham did an awfully good job, too. I didn't ever hear about Secretariat's little kerfluffle with the blanket of roses after the derby. Silly trainer forgot to practice that with him ahead of time. :D
@pjzdreamz12 жыл бұрын
In the first two triple crown races, how much farther did Secretatiat have to run to circle around the field ? In the Derby he ran each 1/4 mile faster then the previous one and was going 39 mph and STILL excellerating at the finish. Just look at how he watches what's going on around him...WHAT a HOSS !

and with only a "chirp" fm Turcotte as he went to the front with Sham. After that it was ALL Secretariat. Turcotte didn't realize how fast, machine like he was going, ride was so smooth. Nack lays out the 1/8th fractions in the book. You watch this year's Belmont and see the difference in strides compared to Secretariat. As Nack describes, he seemed to reach out and fold the turf under him, fluid motion, no climbing.
@christopherduganberry23610 жыл бұрын
This is brilliant race riding by Ronnie Turcotte. He sensed a slow pace and just allowed Secretariat to roll around that turn, gain momentum and he slingshotted himself to the front quite easily. He took Pincay completely by surprise. The race may have been closer had Pincay been more alert to was was happening behind him. However, Since Secretariat dropped back early in the Derby, Pincay probably assumed Ronnie was going to do the same thing here and he got taken by surprise. I doubt Sham would have won but the race may have been closer and perhaps Pincay would not have had to beat the tar out of Sham so much...that was awful!!!! poor Sham

Let's give some credit to the pre race pics. Nailed the straight tri. Crazy that 2 races in a row (especially Grade 1's) end up with the exact same top 3.
@denlaw121713 жыл бұрын
I agree that the Preakness is almost more impressive than the Belmont, and like Belmont, not a single whip throughout the entire race .. Secretariat decided that race ... if you look carefully, Secretariat seems stuck in traffic and frustrated so Ron lets him fall back and then gently leads him to the outside which Secretariat decides it was permission to take off. Ron never corrects and the rest is history.

Did Secretariat just look up at everybody when they took blinders off! That horse was something from God!
@bon104213 жыл бұрын
@oudsemaj cf1970 has an alternative video here that has camera on him as Turcotte just turns his wrist, pulls on right rein just meaning to take him to outside bec he felt horses were slowing a little. But Secretariat took off "like a flushed deer" as Bill Nack put in his fantastic biography. you ought to get copy and read descriptions of these 3 races, incredible, tension filled. The Belmont is 8 pages long ! description of Sham going into distress and Pincay not pushing him is painful.

@machismo64 Great story !!! :) :) in the stands Lucien Laurin said in frustration of Turcotte.... "He blew it !!" When Secretariat made the move.... Turcotte just did that "like a man adjusting a cuff and then pulled on the right rein..." as Nack described it. I don't Lucien really knew quite what he had in this amazing creature.

The $2 Tri 3-1-4 paid $5.20 in this 6 horse field. Just kidding - there was no Tri, but that's what it would have paid. What a run on the clubhouse turn-he moves up 4 wide and blows by them all. I do remember watching this live, but it looks just as good now. Such a shame they mis-timed the race.

Turcotte was not about to wait like he did at the Derby. Red would have won the Derby by 10 lengths if Ronnie had made his move earlier. Just shows how great a horse SEC really was in 73.
@bon104212 жыл бұрын
@442rocketdave People always focus on the 31 lengths. He pulled so far ahead of Sham because Pincay knew Sham was in distress. The painful description is in Nack's bio in the 8 pg description of the race... YES, 8 pages. After the 3/4 mi mark after we pass the flag, Pincay stopped urging Sham and let him fall back. The jockey behind Pincay said Sham's hind legs looked "rubbery." I really think the TIME, the 2:24 FLAT is the most important fact. Even on Sec's heels he still wld've won!
