Secretariat into the stretch in a blaze of glory, Secretariat, ladies and gentlemen, he's all yours, he's on top now by about 10 or 12 lengths..." And then the Canadian and Ontario flags flying. Fwiw, I don't care what Ron Turcotte did to get a 5-day suspension. He should've been allowed to ride Secretariat that day. He could have served his term anytime-

@emmar26756 жыл бұрын
julie hertz why was Ron suspended?
@taxisteve9296 жыл бұрын
Aqueduct stewards had suspended Ron for 5 days following a ride aboard Speak Action....a 2 year old filly. I think that today, they would have let him ride and served the 5th day of the suspension on another day. Eddie was a nervous wreck, worried that if he lost, he would be the jockey responsible for Secretariat losing his last race. But Ron Turcotte had said the horse was so good, anyone could ride him and win, and Eddie Maple was a more than capable jockey!! Ron got to be on him at Aqueduct for his farewell appearance on the track when he just paraded before the crowed who turned out on a cold overcast day to see him. Secretariat seemed confused when after parading on the track, the announcer saying "The horse, is on the track" instead of the usual "The horses are on the track" after the Call To Post, because he was just brought back to the winners circle where a few pics were taken, then his saddle taken off, and Eddie Sweat led him away. It was a happy and sad day. I was there as a kid, and took some pics from the rail with my Kodak Instamatic camera.

What an incredible horse. I’m really so sorry. He did not raise in his fourth year because I think we would’ve seen what he could’ve done as a mature horse, but a decision was made and we have what we have, which is an unbelievable amount of footage of this magnificent horse. I think a Pegasus, because he seems to fly at the end after every race. And how beautiful what a gorgeous face he has his whole body. Everything about him is stunning.

@johnhunter22944 жыл бұрын
There were three Triple Crown winners in the '70s, Secretariat, Seattle Slew and Affirmed, plus Alydar, Ruffian, Riva Ridge... you could make a pretty good case that from about '72 to '78 was the pinnacle of horse racing in America.

nah; we selectively bred the animals for some impressive results, but they've pretty much topped out. enhancing traits of speed and power even further results in rapid over-stress and injury. there's nothing about the passage of time that creates a stronger species. perhaps a more adapted one, but if you're talking about the 'millions of years brings a more advanced, evolved species,'... you might be waiting for a long time. indefinitely, even.

It was a damn shame that Ron Turcotte, a Canadian, could not ride Big Red in his final race that Sunday in the Canadian International Championship in Toronto. Turcotte had been given a 5-day suspension for 'careless riding' at Aqueduct a couple of days before. You would think they could lift the ban for that one race. Ronnie had ridden him in every one of his previous 18 races. Now having said that, as others have similarly noted, anyone could have ridden Secretariat that day and finished first, me included, and I'm 200 lbs!

Speaking of souvenirs (i.e. clumps of sod) of Secretariat's final race, many bettors did not cash their winning pari-mutuel ticket that day, keeping it as a souvenir instead. The Woodbine racetrack printed the tickets bet on Secretariat with the words "Big Red" on them instead of his cloth number. Since he went off at 1 to 9, he only paid $2.10 anyway on a $2 wager...so the mutuel ticket was worth more as a souvenir than the 2.10 $CAN, lol. Stories in the newspaper the next day said bigger bettors, apparently, made their big wagers, but also purchased a second $2 ticket for just that reason. Great memories of the greatest thoroughbred ever...

My God, doesn't every sports-star want to "go out on top?" Very few do however. And then came Secretariat. Great credit goes to Secretariat's owner Miss Penny Tweedy (now known by her birth name - Chernery - currently past ninety and still wonderful! ) After his triple-crown win at Belmont our Secretariat might well have been "retired" and put to stud - Miss Penny felt Secretariat (so beloved by the public) should be show-cased in other racing events (fully knowing that Secretariat might be injured - or simply lose a race - and down-grade his "market value.") Those worries were set aside - onward! Miss Penny was spot on! Miss Penny also wanted to bring the sport to younger people as she (in 1973) saw a lop-sided amount elderly fans - and hardly any twenty-somethings. Her most gracious and heartfelt contribution to this sport was bringing in an entirely new generation of horse-racing fans.

you know they say his heart was double the size of a normal horse's. I believe it.
@johnjolson46277 жыл бұрын
Yes this is true and during Secretariat's brilliant career he was often referred to as a horse with a "big heart" for the incredible way he loved to run - and win! After his death in 1989 it was discovered that Secretariat did indeed (physically) have a very large heart - estimated at 21 pounds (with the average thoroughbred heart being less than half of this). The doctor involved would later say he had never seen anything like it - nothing even close to it. I recall being not at all surprised by the news as it fully explained why we loved Secretariat back then - and why we still marvel over his records all these years later. Cheers from Canada! Home of the beautiful Woodbine Race Track (above) where our sweet boy rolled out his final win.

Thanks for posting this. The audio and actual event are great. I only wish a better/enhanced copy existed. The time of day, the colors of running on turf, and that cold October day where you could see his breath coming down the stretch all lend itself to a surreal cinematic quality which was apt for this legend's last race.
@MarkHebscher2 жыл бұрын
I was there that day, and it was surreal. He seemed to be toying with the field and then when Maple let him go, he electrified the announcer, Daryl Wells, to the point where his voice nearly cracked from excitement. We knew we were witnessing history. The weather was horrible, but that only added to the enormity of his victory. The greatest finale ever by an athlete.

When you can see Kennedy Road and Secretariat coming in front of the stands the first time, check out their strides. Kennedy Road is taller than Secretariat, but his strides are shorter. Gaffney said he loved to run and would 'reach out and grab the earth'. You can see it.
