In my opinion, Secretariat isn't just the greatest racehorse ever, I'd say he's one of the greatest athletes ever. Right up there with Usain Bolt, Michael Phelps, and Bo Jackson. It honestly blows my mind at how great he was. The fact that in 50 years not a single racehorse has come close to his Belmont time is mind boggling. The closest time is 2 seconds slower.

The rapid move in the Kentucky Derby and even faster move in the Preakness is astounding to watch. The quality of the horses in the Belmont was not very high. It was a race for third place. To get 2nd was a bonus.

Everyone raves about his win by 31 lengths in the Belmont. But that move he made in the Preakness was like he simply disregarded the laws of physics for a short while. From last place to 1st... in under 200 yards... in the middle of a distance race... going around a turn...10 lanes out. Cmon. As he goes around them, you see a view from the back. Look how much bigger his back legs and flanks are...

Those of us that are fans of thoroughbred racing are lucky that Sham and Secretariat were born in the same year, Sham not nearly so fortunate. Secretariat clearly answered the "which was the better horse" question, but what if they hadn't competed head-to-head? Secretariat set the Kentucky Derby record in '73, but Sham finished with what was then the second-fastest Derby time to date, and the debate would remain unsettled.

Secretariat is one of my favourite films that involves horses. I then watch this clip of the 3 races and by the end of it I was in tears!!! Just to see a jockey and horse in tune with each other., and the fact that the jockey hardly uses the whip is a testament of how good a horse Secretariat is/was. The only other horse that comes within a smidgeon to Secretariat was Red Rum, the only horse to win 3 Grand Nationals, a National Hunt horse race held annually at Aintree Racecourse, Liverpool in the UK. It is a handicap steeplechase over an official distance of about 4 miles and 2½ furlongs (4 miles 514 yards (6.907 km)), with horses jumping 30 fences over two laps. But Secretariat was a beast on the flat. His winning margin of at least 25 lengths will go down as the greatest race ever, and to this day has not been matched.

I watch all the videos of Secretariat that I can find. Your commentary is great. I never knew about Sham's injury. He was so lucky to finish the race without breaking down. From all my hours of watching Big Red and all the books I have read I understand he was a very intelligent savvy horse. I started thinking he was well aware of the various distances he trained for and then ran. Maybe he didn't worry about finishing last because he understood how far he had to run in the big 3 races. Breaking last he scoped out the competition and chose when to make his move as well as how fast to push himself. Belmont strikes me as Red testing himself and Turcotte being great enough to let him. All the people around Red have said he was brilliant so I hope that brilliance is why he gave his all at Belmont. He pushed himself as no human ever would have for fear of injuring him. Just like so many top level young athletes, he wanted to know his own limits regardless of the competition. And so he became the "Tremendous Machine" that we all still love today. And Red found out what he was made for.

4 horses in world: War Horse, Secretariat, and Seabiscut. And my neighbour's appaloosa owned by Darrel N. When they analised Secretariat's heart, they found it was larger than normal.

Darrel's horse was the one of the top horses in NA for rodeo. He was offered 20kUS cash on the spot in 1970 something.

That was also true of Seabiscuit about his heart. Because he didn’t have the physical stature of a typical racehorse.

Sham’s heart was also abnormally large - about 18lbs.

@@jenniferbryce4037I don't remember ever reading or hearing that about Seabiscuit although it wouldn't surprise me. How was that determined, since according to Lauren Hillenbrand's meticulously researched biography of Seabiscuit, he was buried in a secret location at Charles Howard's ranch?

I still get very emotional watching the Belmont race. 31 lengths. Unbelievable!!! Camera had to do a very wide shot to get Secretariat and the #2 horse in the same frame. You wonder about the thought process of animals, but I know Secretariat wanted to win so bad, he buried the others in Belmont. He broke the record racing vs himself, no competition.

As I recall, it was later discovered that Secretariat was a True Phenomenon of Nature: he was born with an oversized ❤️ heart. Therefore, it is unlikely that his performance as Lightning with Hooves could EVER be equalled. It seems to this poor sinner that the Almighty Creator intended for that noble creature to help uplift the entire National Consciousness of the USA - as was ending the era when the Vietnam War (1955-1975) long had been afflicting this Country's own very heart and soul. 🙏🏼🌹

I'm surprised that breeders haven't been able to breed Secretariat's big heart into subsequent generations. They knew where it came from genetically.

Damn, that chokes me up every time... If you want to sob, watch the ESPN documentary about the filly Ruffian- ⚠️ warning, though- watch only if you can handle your heart wrenched out of your chest with sadness. It's a gutting story in the end- just wanna warn folks, but she was a legend in her own right and if you can handle it it's definitely worth watching!

With all due respect, American Pharoah and Justify did not win their triple crown under the same rules as the first 11. There was no point system in place for the first eleven winners ….which meant that they had to take on anyone who entered the race. The competition wasn’t modified back then with a point system to ensure the top sprinters would not have enough points to get in the derby and screw up the pace….yet they could have entered in previous years based on their earnings. This is what I have noticed since this point system was implemented long after Affirmed became the 11th triple crown winner. The fields are now modified to reduce the competition for the top horses so they have a much better chance of winning the triple crown. After all, we’re entitled to see a triple crown winner every few years and forget about the notion that it’s supposed to be an impossible feat to accomplish. The fans are entitled. Change the rules and BAM now you have triple crown winners that have only run six times in their life. Been a racing fan from the 1960s….this sport is not new to me and I know the rules and all the big players throughout the years. The actual sport is over with….has been since the late 90s. What we have today are horse race shows…..which lightly raced horse can win six in a row then retire as quickly as possible? All of the past dozen or so eclipse award winning horses of the year.

I wasn’t completely aware of that. I just looked into the earlier history of the triple crown and how it got its name and the winners themselves. I didn’t dive deep into all the history for the triple crown as this was a video mainly about Secretariat
