All great horses had large hearts. The great Shams heart was huge too. Slightly smaller than Secretariats, which was why sham could keep up with Secretariat. It's a shame that Sham broke his leg at the Belmont and busted his teeth out coming out of the gate at the derby. Sham was the fastest horse with the worst luck.

@@tobleroonie5043 I've never heard that. I read he suffered a hairline in his cannon bone and had 3 screws put in it at Belmont Equine Hospital after the Belmont race. He was retired sometimes in the summer of 73, I believe. But yeah, Sham was a helluva horse. I think he would have beaten Secretariat at the derby if he didn't bust his teeth out on the starting gate. Ran the entire race with nasal cavities swollen shut and still broke the derby record with Secretariat. What a horse he was.

He literally sired Terlingua, who was the dam of one of the greatest sires, Storm Cat. Without Secretariat many champions would not come to existence, INCLUDING two Triple Crown winners of our century, American Pharaoh and Justify

He sired excellent broodmare that run through bloodlines to this day. Stallions such as AP Indy, Storm Cat, and Gone West are the big three. Some of his daughters did well on the track such as Lady's Secret and Terlingua. The Zenyatta Stakes used to be The Lady's Secret Stakes. Most of his daughters went straight into the breeding shed not wanting to risk injury to them. He had sons who were good horses such as General Assembly and Risen Star. Risen Star would have been a Triple Crown winner if it hadn't been for a bad trip in the Kentucky Derby. He came extremely close to Secretariat's time in The Belmont and literally pulled away from the other horses in the same fashion as Secretariat. The problems that arose from breeding Secretariat was belonging to a syndicate. The chances of getting the best mares were minimized because if the owners of the shares didn't have excellent broodmares then a stallion's chances of producing excellent offspring were low. Now syndicates breed their stallions as much as they can. We're now seeing some stallions breeding mares up to 175 mares or more a season. This was unheard of before. In contrast Secretariat's sire Bold Ruler only took approved nominations which is the reason he was more successful as a sire. Unfortunately most of Bold Ruler's get inheirted his confirmation and stamina faults. Now very few stallions require nominations and as a result we are seeing breakdowns on the track. Money is king and the breeders want young precocious horses for a quick recoup of their investments. This is why you are seeing lightly raced stallions now. When you see stallions being bred 125+ times in a season you're going to see more winners. We are also seeing stallions being sent to the southern hemisphere for money grabs. With stallions being bred so much we are seeing them die at younger ages. A stallion who was at a $50,000 breeding fee covered 185 mares. For that one season alone he netted $9,250,000 that year alone. Breeding is the profit, not the racing. In other words, the game has changed dramatically just in the past twenty years. Secretariat couldn't duplicate himself which is what people expected and wanted. Maybe he could have if he was bred so many times in a season but is that in the best interests of the stallions? Is this the reason we're seeing breakdowns on the tracks? It may be.

Absolutely agree. The Jockey Club put him at #2 with Man 'o War #1 I never liked comparisons of champions. All great in their own way. But #7...really? And his big head caused him problems walking? That's false info. His stud fees were sold before he ran the triple crown. He also finished out his 3 year old year. Then he was put out to stud, and the horses he bred never one anything, but the mares he sired, did produce a few good horses.
