I think that the shell painting is a representation of the magic earrings that allow one to speak with the merfolk. The RPG book has you hunt one of them down and the art looks like the same kind of shell, which would fit the idea that this is where the two races first met and communicated.

If the chest of sorrow is behind the wall, and if the chamber behind it is the meeting place of the merfolk and any land dwelling intelligence ( or astral ) maybe the chest is kept there to maintain the water levels of a possible entrance where the merfolk would reside during conversation...

I think the Merfolk are their own people/race. And that the cave paintings talk about one who would join the merfolk or that maybe we could be cursed or gifted to swim with them. Thus we see what appears to be a person transforming into a merfolk. Maybe we’ll get the chance to Don our own fins and swim beneath the waves later this year. That would be most exciting!

Being able to play as a merfolk as a solo choice of gameplay could be kind of interesting, being able to swim very fast with breathing underwater , slower on earth with a breath gauge to manage, either help or plot against human players

Would love to see a faction of the mer-folk that attack humans in the water, much more aggressively than sharks, and maybe even with weapons. This would seriously add to the tension and decision-making about whether or not to enter the water.

I think I know why salty became a skeletal parrot. I believe Wanda (Whatever her name is) was using potions to learn about skeletons. She might have been trying to make salty become a skeleton too, but he became a parrot skeleton, not a human one. She possibly was trying to make a cure, or a curse.

I can tell you right now that whenever I dig up a chest of sorrow my crew and I prefer to leave them partially burried so maybe the sounds you heard were just coming from a nearly invisble chest probobly near some shrubs that camoflauged it, at the same time it could just be a sfx added in by the devs near the cave.

Hear me out, What if the Pirate Lords Body (Skeleton) is what Captain Flame Heart has possession of, either they made a deal one to get a host body the other to live forever in some form? Or Flame Heart organised the killing and theft of said host body? This is under the assumption Captain Flame Heart uses souls to survive and The Pirate Lord uses them to remain in his undead state. That's my theory, we have all been played and by the Greatest Pirates to grace the Seas.

I'm surprised there is no mention of the Gold Hoarder yellow painted skull tucked away in the corner of that alcove cave, its just behind the painting of the Conch Shell. Mysterious, and may well mean something, in due time. same way that weird red painted reaper skull has been impaled on a crook's hollow stalactite, cryptic and strange little inclusions that never seem to get mentioned.

Tribute Peak, one of the Ancient's strongholds against hostile forces, was also a meeting place between them and the Merfolk? It has statues of them throughout which bear the same magic that they do, and extensive water sections within the caverns. They, as well as the road leading into the ocean, suggest that it was likely a place of communication between them, where they traded between what the Merfolk brought and what the Ancients had within their vault. The curse which is on the immense quantities of treasure within it may very well be the result of hostile action taken by the Merfolk, though what it originally did is likely never going to be known. Given its current curse, however (binding those who take it to the Gold Hoarder), it may have been what caused the skeletons - an attack by the Merfolk, using curses to trap the Ancients' minds within the Sea of the Damned, and their souls to their bodies. As for the Chest of Sorrow, it's quite interesting. It bears resemblance to the Set of the Wailing Barnacle, recovered from Stitcher Jim's shipwreck. We first earned parts of that set in the Sunken Curse update, which was quite unique to all of the other skeleton-related ones at the time. The ship set also bears a mermaid as its figurehead, and the entire set is themed around the depths of the ocean. It's very possible that the Chest of Sorrow, which also pours out water constantly (the thing that the Merfolk live in), is more related to them than we think.

The chest of Sorrows was created by Shan. One of the pirate lords crew mates. He was a tinkerer and created the chest of sorrows, and the grog chest. As well as every other chest within the game. Apart from the newer ones, and those created by skeletons (stronghold chests) he also created the music boxes, the rye of reach and imbued all cannons with the ability to fire humans from them. Every chest that is required to be opened by a gold Hoarder is the creation of the pirate lord and his crew.

I did forget to see if this lined up with the thing about the Pirate Lord's crew making the chests, that is true. Did Shan enchant the cursed chests into what they are now, or was that the work of another (perhaps he was assisted by the Merfolk, given that the crew did have quite a bit of contact with them)? I believe the stronghold and skeleton captain's chests were merely cosmetically altered by the skeletons, since they do require the same keys.
