Why does the hada not go thru to the ha ? Why laminate a dagger ? Most tanto were one piece.

The blade area is made of foldet steel with a higher carbon content. That is why it is darker. The structure of the steel is tighter in this area. Less transparent. All the more so because the walls at the Gassan school are intentionally made of steel with an extremely distinctive structure. The steel structure is of course also in this part. The insertion of high carbon steel into the blade is typical of koto swords. In Shinto swords (Gassan) this difference in the steel used between the blade and the sides is not usual. The question of why the steel is laminated and The statement that tanto blades were usually made of one piece of steel is not true. Steel has always been laminated. There was almost no other option. The exception was wootz, which was not commonly used in Japan. Or cast iron, (steel with a very high C content) which is brittle and cannot be used to make a functional blade. The use of shingane from lower C steels is also not unusual for tanto. In some cases, the shingane is really massive. The reason was probably an effort to save high quality steel for the sheath of the blade. For the presented style (Gassan), however, I do not use steel with a lower C content for the central part. But on the contrary. It is a higher quality steel.

For example, read this article. You'll be a little smarter. There is a lot of similar information available. It is necessary to search and study. www.ksky.ne.jp/~sumie99/shingane.html

@@katanamaking2606 my point is that tanto do not require a soft core as katana. So one type of iron, beautified.
