RIP Jimmy Mataya From Mary K: I heard from my old Las Vegas friends, Joe Alvarez, Andy Hughes & Larry Schwartz a few hours ago that Jimmy Mataya has passed away after a tough battle with cancer. He was 74. One of the last of a dying breed of characters & known in the pool world as “Pretty Boy Floyd,” Jimmy started playing at eleven & a short five years later won both the Lansing City 14.1 & Michigan State 14.1 Championships. He remained the Michigan State champ through 1970. Venturing away from home & as the game began its transition from straight pool to nine ball, Jimmy won the 1971 Los Angeles 9 Ball Championship & won both the 1972 Dayton Open All Around title & the Stardust Open 9 Ball & All Around titles. With his feet in several different games & all through the ‘70s, he went on to claim the Nevada & Michigan State 14.1 titles as well as several other titles in both nine ball & eight ball. Considered to be the greatest pool player to ever come out of Lansing, MI, in 1989, he was inducted into the Great Lansing Area Sports Hall of Fame. He, along with the other stars of the day, was in both the 1980 film, “The Baltimore Bullet” & the 1986 film, “The Color Of Money.” Jimmy was also one of the first pool commentators & was known for his charisma, his heart, his gamble, his sense of humor & a veritable wealth of pool stories. I first saw Jimmy at the 1977 PPPA World 14.1 Open in New York City. With his running mates, Louie Roberts & Larry Lisciotti, they cut quite a swath through the host of champs from yesteryear & those that were on the rise. All in their late twenties & dashing in their tuxedos, they stole the show when a gorgeous young lady wheeled in a silver cart laden with many bottles on ice & Jimmy announced, “Champagne for everyone!” A party ensued & what a party! A few years later, Jimmy introduced me to his new bride, Ewa. They were the “it” couple of the pool world & a few years later, their daughter, Nikki, was born. Although they later divorced & Ewa Laurance remarried, they remained friends. In the wee hours of his life, Ewa, Nikki, Larry Schwartz & Billy Incardona arrived in Las Vegas - along with Jimmy’s family & many friends to be with him in home hospice. Billy said, “He was a maverick. Love him or hate him, he lived his life to the fullest & according to Floyd’s rules.” Ewa told me that they were in his office earlier today & found about 25 different appreciation awards from various organizations & charities including the ASPCA & NAACP. She told me that every single time he was asked, he gave generously. Kindhearted as a kid, he overcame a tough childhood to become a superstar in both the pool world & life. As many of his friends knew, there were many sides to the man - both good & bad. And as Ewa said, “He was who he was. A husband, a father, a grandfather, a friend, a champion, an entertainer & ...a maverick.” I’m sure that the entire pool world will join me in offering my condolences to his family & all who loved him. RIP, Jimmy...

@jeffk17226 жыл бұрын
Listen here adog7474, you want a trophy that's fine, but all it's gonna do is collect dust. What this video teaches is how to make cash. You want to pay off your car? You're gonna need cash, and if you can hustle in pool, you can make cash. Not just some trophy. Because a trophy is a trophy, and cash is money, which comes from cash.

All the people saying this guy didn’t teach how to hustle pool is wrong. He’s not teaching shots. This isn’t a how to play pool video. This is a video on how to hustle. If you’re good at pool you understand how much knowledge he’s throwing down.
@THE_CHOAS_ENGINE4 жыл бұрын
I agree. Hustling pool is essentially about using a few different techniques designed to misrepresent your skill. Losing when it doesn't matter, and barely winning when it does... so that onlookers think you got lucky and you then continue the hustle on to the next person waiting in the same place. Goal is to walk out without anyone mugging you. Even though you may be able to take everyones cash you shouldn't.... not in one night anyway.

He's an Egomaniac! About 20 years ago, he was playing in Baton Rouge at a place called "Lambert's RBD's". The guy backing him was a big dude, I'm guessing about 6'2", 300, long ponytail with a couple of girls hanging all over him. Jimmy was losing big money and the big dude told him to tighten up several times. But instead Jimmy was bragging about his watch and gold rings to his opponent trying to intimidate him. He lost another game and was on the brink of losing the match when the big dude got up, walked over and punched Jimmy's lights out! He went down like a brick hitting the floor! They called an ambulance and when they took him away his was still unconsious. The opponents started demanding the match money to with the big guy replied, "My man can't play so the match and bet is cancelled!". Of course the guy balked a lot, but he just witnessed what the big guy could do. It was quite the talk of the town for weeks! The big dude left town being he couldn't get any more games to back with the opponents knowing he might not pay. So in this video, when Jimmy says you should know when to quit, he apparently learned the hard way! Ewa knew what she was doing when she left him! You can also see him in a cameo shot in 'The Color of Money'. (As well as Grady Matthews whom I got to meet and take lessons from.)

Roadies, hustlers, players, gamblers used to come to town to play Jimmy. I watched him play at the Cozy Lounge, long gone now. All the players dressed up & wore pinky rings & what not. Not like today’s faux hustlers & players who all dress like bums. They’ d play late at night. Bar table 9 ball. Game was different back then. After a time I got so I could play pretty sporty myself. I learned a lot watching these guys play & enjoyed it immensely. But, just like there’ll only be 1 Keith McReady, there’ll always be just 1 ‘Pretty Boy Floyd’.

It's not about how good you play. It's about if you know whether or not you can beat the other player. The quicker a person can figure this out the better hustler he'll become.
@species369610 жыл бұрын
I just want to know, did you beat Efren Reyes ?
@network7354 жыл бұрын
He never been beat by anyone playing for cash in his life, so he didn't play efren rayes for cash, we know that much lol efren wins trophies, let's face it cash is better.
