etcd is a distributed key-value store backing Kubernetes control plane. It has been critical for allowing Kubernetes to achieve the necessary reliability and scalability, which has in turn contributed to Kubernetes' overall success. However, etcd has a reputation of being hard to operate and not performant. How is it possible that some people are able to use etcd to run Kubernetes clusters with thousands of nodes and hundreds of thousands of pods while others struggle even with basic use cases? This talk will share the secrets of how to run etcd reliably at scale, based on years of experience of managing it in production. We will also explore the hidden costs of using an open source solution.
