To have AO with Lumen, you have to use these two console variables. r.Lumen.DiffuseIndirect.SSAO 1 and r.Lumen.ScreenProbeGather.ShortRangeAO 0. And the AO will work with Lumen in real time. because in ue5 doesn't work anymrore. at least they are added It again recently but in a different Way, not what video showed. Surely adding which version he was using would make people lose less time

So, concerning realism, does ambient occlusion not conflict with modern lighting techniques such as RTGO (or Lumen for example)? I had always assumed it was a computationally cheap way to approximate the same effect

You'd better be careful about recommendations, now there are 2 users with troubles about AO, if you're using UE 5.2 the AO is not working at all from PPV, because if using Lumen the AO is deprecated.

Damn, I wish Blender would have this kind of control of ambient occlusion in Cycles. UE5 seems to be superior in that respect.

It makes no sense to have fake AO in a true path tracer (like cycles). AO simulates a side effect of path tracing that doesn't come with fast realtime approximations like Lumen or SSGI because they lack the precision to do so.

Ambient Occlusion is THE OPPOSITE FROM REALISM. In fact, for Archviz, if using Static Lighting, you should NOT use Ambient Occlusion at all!!! I mean, this is all WRONG! Any occlusion that hapoens in real world gets baked in the lightmaps when using LIGHTMASS!!! So, no! You may want to use AO as an artistic addition or creative decision, but its NOT realistic. Quite the opposite! The same happens with offline rendering. Years ago they used AO passes for offline renderings very often. But we just stopped usinh that becaus its nit realistic at all. And the raw render already has baked in it all the occlusion that would happen in real world.
