What I think they meant is that you don't have to feed every polyp at once, but you should aim to feed different, and eventually all, polyps over multiple feedings.

So it's true that each polyp is interconnected within the colony - so feeding one polyp can help feed other polyps if the colony is starving. However, ignoring specific polyps in the long term will eventually cause the whole colony to starve since certain polyps aren't pulling their weight and mooching off of others. So yes, every polyp should be fed eventually. Hope that clarifies things! - Stephen

Excellent information and I’m really glad you brought on the dendro detective, Stephen!! Haha that’s just what I call him, but he is a pro at nps as you know. Can’t wait until my rescued sun coral colony is as healthy as his. And damn I bet that not having that pink sun coral is probably the worst regret of your life 😝 at least you have other nps. An actual question this time- what do you do if you have a vacation or a long weekend away that means you can’t feed every day? If you’ve fed them every couple days for months, will they be ok for a 3-4 days without a feed?

I have done quite a bit of traveling with the same Fathead Dendro in my previous 45g tank. That there was no problem convincing it to open up and grab food even after 1 week, although at the 1.5 week mark it took a noticeable effort to convince the polyps to open up. And around 2 weeks without feeding things got sketchy. I remember having to wait and see when the polyp naturally open a little bit (usually at night), and I'd have to make an effort to make sure they get food so that they would have energy to open again. Usually after they take the first bite, things would go back to normally very quickly. This was only with the Fathead Dendro though, I have not had experience with going without feeding for the Sun Coral.

I highly recommend UV. If that’s a bacterial bloom - and it very likely is - UV will take care of it very quickly.

Another part that I haven't really touched on is how much excess nutrient I am pumping into the tank by feeding the NPS I have... I need to beef up that refugium! I should have asked Stephen about his water parameters and how he keeps them in check.

I am still trying to figure it out in the Mangrove tank, it has been unhappy starting last month and has not opened fully. Some more knowledgeable reefers recently helped me with a checklist, it goes from too much light, too much flow, alk swing, temp swing, pest. I am slowly narrowing the list down, hope it help you identify what's bugging yours as well. Some people recommend a dip to revitalize the coral, I have not tried that yet with mine.

While Dendros and Sun corals can be kept and not too hard they certainly are not a beginner coral and require feedings. As far as other NPS corals some are near impossible to keep or require allot of care. Some NPS corals need to be feed almost 24/7 or they will starve. Also what UV sterilizer where you talking about in the video?
