This is absolutely magnificent! While many civilizations at that time were just emerging out of the dirt, Greeks had already built such fortified structures which put even the modern engineers in awe! Simply OUTSTANDING!
@MadKingOfMadaya3 жыл бұрын
*_You should see Persepolis around one or two centuries older than the Parthenon and twice the height. Some modern historians are arguing wether Persian engineers were sent to Greece to build these temples of worship as to show, not only their acceptance but encouragement of different religions and cultures and as a gift to Greece perhaps in order to convince them to join the Persian empire_*

The Parthenon doesn't look like that because it was withered by time, but because people destroyed it. The most damage was probably done by the Venetians and Turks when Athens was under Turkish occupation and the Turks stored gunpowder in the Parthenon that blew up when it got hit by the Venetian besiegers. And in the 19th century the British bribed the Turks so they could loot the remaining Parthenon, sawing off sculptures and marbles, destroying irreplacable cultural heritage in the process, to bring it to Britain. Britain now refuses to return the Parthenon marbles, now renamed Elgin marbles to honour the person who looted this for Britain, claiming that the looting was a creative act and that they are legally bound to not return it to Greece, because according to British law, these Parthenon marbles are now property of the looters and the looters do not want to return the Parthenon marbles back to Greece...

Note that in this part of the documentary is not being mentioned that the actual reason the Parthenon was erected, wasn't exactly to celebrate Goddess Athena, ruther than to celebrate the victory of free men (Athenians) over an invading army which aimed to enslave them and Greece as a whole. That's what make this building so remarkable. On its frieze (which has been stolen by the British and is being kept in the British Museum to this day) there are depictions of free men, not of Gods and Goddesses.

There was a carved statue of Athena from an tree that the ancient Greeks had no idea where it came from on the Acropolis. Just one of the ancient mysteries. That was one of the reasons they made the Parthenon. If I'm not mistaken, the wooden Athena burned from a lightning strike in the early 7th century bce.

It is a huge difference when you see ancient buildings in Rome and false ancient building in Athene. It's not matter to like or dislike, it comes from the fact that Roman antic building have a long tradition and own history, in this case we have fabricated history from 1830 to nowadays. You can charm people who doesn't know the past but you cannot cheat the people who are educated with the knowledge of the past and knowledge of buildings material. It's so horrible for the person who deals with historical research especially when it recognizes a salt coated marble which is produced over a period of time who determines the age of the building and a marble that is set less than 150 years on soil without foundation. I personally like the ancient buildings who still held the ancient in themselves which are held in the original version but this violent method of rewriting history, NO, anyhow thank you for your advice.

it can be that the Parthenon wasn't the original temple or that there was a previous temple there. Also, if on the Pentelikon marble you use certain chemical substances it can shine again. We do that in older houses where at least one part of the house has this type of marble as flooring. But those chemicals unfortunately they are too corruptive to use on the Akropolis marbles.
@ziggy2shus6244 жыл бұрын
The Parthenon was in very good condition until the Italians blew it up in 1687, which turned the great structure into a pile of ruble. People were robbing the little bits and pieces when Lord Elgin acquired some for the British Museum. The Parthenon was built in about 10 years, and they have been rebuilding it for 300 years. Make work project.
@elbmw3 жыл бұрын
Actually the Italians did not blow it up. The Venetians had barricaded themselves in the Acropolis, besieged by the Ottoman Turks and used the Parthenon as their ammunition dump. It was a Turkish cannon ball that hit the Parthenon and exploded the ammunition within it. The Parthenon was not completed for many decades. The current restoration project is also only a few decades old but progress has been slow for several reasons. 1) The Archaeologists and restoration experts are having to be extra careful not to damage the existing structures. 2) Work is slower as the original architect Phidias employed hundreds of persons for the project. All in all there were thousands of people involved in its construction. 3) Current works have sometimes been stalled as it was hoped the the UK would return the sculptures as it is difficult to reconstruct the building to its original specification without them. May I suggest you fact check?
@AALavdas3 жыл бұрын
@@elbmw Fact check is a good idea, indeed. The story about Turks and Venetians is true, but the Turks were inside, and the Venetians outside. Both are to blame: the Turks for storing ammunition in there, and the Venetians for bombarding it. Current works have been going on for over 40 years (not....300, as ziggy2shus wrote). We agree that they are very careful and meticulous -- basically they are putting every possible fragment back in its place. But their progress has nothing to do with the sculptures. Even if they are returned, they will go to the museum. Here is the explosion story: www.historytoday.com/archive/months-past/parthenon-blown
@elbmw3 жыл бұрын
@@AALavdas You are indeed correct regarding the explosion but would it not be better to put them back on the Parthenon? Little point in taking them out of one museum to put them in another, albeit a much nearer one as the argument for their return would be much stronger then.

Oh yes, the Parthenon. Could it be that this is not the original structure? It is the one that was created during the Athenian "Golden age" but that hill was sacred for many milleniums before. Some archeologists or some people do have trouble understanding that the locations pre-existed as important in the minds of people. The monuments came after. So below this structure exists the older temple, and below that one it is probable, that one or two more may be found (or what is left of them, if anything is left).

Athens was named after Athena. The old story is there was a contest between Athena and Posideon for naming rights of the city. Posideon brought the sea to the city and Athena brought the city Olives and Olive trees. The people thought the Olive trees were the better of the two so they named the city after Athena

I think the Acropolis is an ancient megalithic structure that was built by an ancient civilization before the Greeks.

There was a previous temple burned to the ground by the Persians. The fire was so fierce that the marble deformed from the high temperature. This material was used by the newer builders as a foundation for the new temple.

@@asicdathens athens\acropolis according to ancient historians was a mycenean 'palace' or settlement. also the athenians were ionians, not "athenians" as a race or people. the spartans and others were dorians, ancient invaders(maybe part of the old "sea people" that invaded or imigrated in the bronze age 'dark age") anyway the ionians saw themselves as the original greeks(sort of) and even had laws against allowing dorians into certain holy places and more. one good source for alot of this: histories by herodotos

If it was not stuck up on that mountain it would of been plundered for every bit of marble for other constructions like all the Roman Buildings all over the Empire , so we are very lucky to have what is there as humanity are so destructive , how could people in the past be so irresponsible with that ancient building is beyond belief , but if you look at Western society today , one half keeps it going while the other half bleed it dry and try and tear it down .

It's time for the British to give the Marbles back. They can make perfect copies of them to keep in their museum.

Think that's amazing and all but what about it's basement? There must be something besides stone worth something down there. Also, isn't that where Jason and the Argonauts fought one of the Claymation beasts?

Why people used marbles. Marbles are seasoned silicate usually found under big river lakes over years of water flow. They have a good polishing finish. To assemble them it was a little bit easy and extreme fine art work can be done with clear detailing and finish look. Moreover planters are not much needed as they could cut wedges and stack with extraordinary precision to get a well balanced structure. Usually tall structures are difficult with small stones and plaster. Weather also took less tolls. Ideal heat and temperature maintenance inside. Water storage was easy inside high mountains. Mostly overlooking the place. Water was number one requirements for the city below.
