I visited NYC as a kid in 2009 and the Empire State Building blew me away. When my dad and I arrived in the taxi, I walked up to the building and just looked up as it towered over me. It was an incredible sight (I lived in Springfield, MO). We then walked in to the lobby and the massive ceilings and granite and copper were so beautiful. We got in the elevator and it accelerated upward so hard my knees buckled. I arrived at the 86th floor in maybe 40 seconds. The views from the observatory deck were so mind bending. That trip changed my view on life forever. Also, the subways, the holes where the two World Trade center buildings were (they were MASSIVE!) and Grand Central Station were incredible sights to behold.

Planning a visit to NYC in 2023. First stop - ESB. Second stop - Chrysler Building. The two stunning Art Deco skyscrapers that NYC has to offer. There are no others. And nearly 100 years on, they may not be the tallest anymore ... but they are the coolest skyscrapers that we all want to see in person.

I've always wanted to go to NYC. As an American, it's a shame I've never been there. I want to see the Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building in person. Art Deco is such a gorgeous style!

Trust me...you're not missing much. I've worked in that area and been to meetings and events in the building. It's like any other office building in NYC tbh...Maybe a good view depending on location, height, direction, and if there's a private terrace.

Fun fact: the design for the ESB was first tried out in miniature form here in Winston-Salem NC with the Reynolds building. Every year, on father's day, the custodial staff at the ESB sends a card to the custodial staff at the Reynolds building.

Well there were 3,400 construction laborers who worked on the construction, when you have that MANY people working 10-12 hours a day 6 days a week stuff gets done FAST. The real brilliancy was the one who generated the supply and work schedules, they had limited access, traffic to deal with etc to bring in raw materials, the materials had to be brought in on a very tight specific timeslot so workers wouldnt run out of work because something was misdelivered, and in perfect sequence due to limited storage space- what was delivered was ready to be installed, no men waiting around for it, no materials piling up. Out of the 10 million bricks ordered, ONE was left over- it was on display in a showcase on the 86th floor back around 1972 when I went.

Until the last decade or so, NYC looked very bland too with the exception of maybe 5-10 buildings. It's not a beautiful, clean, or even well-functioning, city. It's the best thing in NYC though.

I went a couple weeks ago during sunset and into night and honestly what a spectacle it was. Definitely best part of the trip. Though imo Chrysler building looks better! (But you do get a great view of it from the ESB)

I have a 78rpm recording my father made while he and his Navy buddy were atop the Empire State Building in Oct 1956. He sent it to his mother back home in Indiana. He describes what they could see and what they had been doing . They had seen the movie Giant at the Roxy.

Want to know a real secret about the Empire State Building? The red marble in the entrance hall is very rare and comes from Germany. You can find it in old buildings in the Lahn region, they stopped mining it in the 50s.

Interesting, As a little kid I remember seeing an article in TIME magazine where they told of the installation of curved security fencing up at the top of the building in order to stop people from committing suicide jumps from off the top of the building, I remember seeing a Black and white photo of some lady who had jumped off the top of the building and had landed as well as crashed down into the top of some car, It was a pretty gory scene, The top or roof of whatever vehicle was crushed in by that person’s weight, Keep in mind that vehicles of the time were manufactured out of heavy gauge steel, But the impact of that person’s body crushed the top of that vehicle, This photo that I saw was out of a TIME Magazine hard cover book, Definitely nothing that a little kid such as I was at the time should be looking at, But it was over at my Neighbors house , So it was just me looking, My parents had absolutely no idea of what I had seen, The whole thing was definitely a bit bizarre, And at the time I really had no concept about any of this mess, It was definitely TRAGIC

!'d like to see a detailed video tour of the Empire State building's 103rd floor (Yes it has one) that's above the 102nd floor observation room and it contains transmission gear but occasionally over the years celebrities have been there. And then I'd like to see a video tour of the cramped 104th floor (It's the cone-shaped room (5:16) upon which the transmission antenna assembly is mounted) which only technicians are allowed into (It also has transmission electronics too).

“Blimp” a word that comes from “British or Balloon and Limp” is not an interchangeable word with Zeppelin. The proper word is dirigible airship or simply airship. Airships of this era were rigid. The non-rigid “limp” ones would never have been running passenger service from Germany. They were more observation posts, decoys for larger airships, and much later, the floating billboards we know and love. (And even some of those went back to a rigid frame design with the latest “NT” generation.)

The Stock Market Crash happened in 1929! The building was built in 1930-31! That means that the building started construction AFTER the Stock Market Crash and the beginning of the Great Depression. It's weird that people keep acting like the Great Depression was this big massive event that happened all at once. It wasn't. It was a series of disasters that happened one after the other. The Stock Market Crash of 1929 was one such event. The Dust Bowl was another. This idea that they started building the Empire State Building before the Great Depression and then it happened all of a sudden right before the finished building it is ridiculous.

Presumably planning, financing, etc. took place before actual construction began. So it is possible that the project started before the Great Depression, and that the first few setbacks of it were seen as temporary glitches that would resolve themselves by the time construction was done.

And then World War II in fact near war's end a B-25 Mitchell bomber that took off from Newark crashed into the 79th floor and several people were killed and Betty Lou Oliver an elevator operator survived an entire free fall into the basement

A blimp uses the lifting gas pressure to maintain it's shape, like a balloon. Zeppelins had a rigid frame that kept the shape of the craft. Both zeppelins and blimps can be called dirigibles because they are steerable.

4 a building of its era about 100 year design life, but thats not set in stone. So long as its been well maintained (& i suspect thats the case) & there's not any major corrosion issues wt the steelwork, it will be good for decades more, if not centuries. The effiel tower was only supposed to last a year & its still standing.

The Empire State Building is an Art Deco *grande dame* of a certain age - the queen of New York City. In her Fortuny-pleated beige limestone gown, to the glowing lights of her headgear, she stands as a beacon to those who need a light to guide them. Her sister the Chrysler Building is the disreputable aunt the family doesn't like to tell the kids about. And her taller and more stylish granddaughter stands downtown, trying to emulate her famous ancestor. For most of my life, that has been my favorite place in the city. (And I haven't been up any of the newer buildings, except One World Trade Center, which isn't worth the price of admission).
