Nyingma, Kadampa, Kagyu, Sakya and Gelug are the main schools of Tibetan Buddhism, which is divided into four main lineages (Nyingma, Kagyu, Sakya and Gelug).
Although all are valid, there are historical reasons for their foundations, approach, emphasis and differences in sacred texts considered canonical or apocryphal.
Follow the enlightened explanations of the Friend Monk, in a series of 6 episodes:
1) What are and how the lineages of Tibetan Buddhism work.
2) Nyingma - The Ancient Lineage (The First Diffusion of Buddhism in Tibet, Guru Rinpoche Padmasambhava, the system of ancient tantras and the termas and tertons - the tradition of revealed teachings - this modality is represented, in Brazil, by the Chagdud Gonpa network, by Lama Chagdud Tulku Rinpoche, Chagdud Khadro, Lama Tsering Everest; by the Nyingma Institute; and by Lama Chime's sangha.
3) Kadampa - The forerunner lineage of change (founded by Atisha Dipamkara - Lamrim writings - not to be confused with Modern Buddhism of the New Kadampa Tradition, by Geshe Kelsang Gyatso)
4) Kagyu - The lineage of yogis of the new tantras (The teachings and main characteristics up to Mahamudra, and the importance of Gurus like Naropa, Marpa, Milarepa, Gampopa, Rechungpa, Khyungpo Neljor, Karmapa and Shamarpa; fragmented into several lineages, some of which are present in Brazil).
5) Sakya - The family lineage (its structure, main masters and teachings)
6) Gelug - The Light amidst the Darkness (no spoilers!).
Before knowing who the Dalai Lama, Karmapa, Sakya Trizin and other leaders are, we need to know at least the training and philosophical and practical basis of Tibetan Buddhism - this series of videos is part of our playlist of the Free Course on Buddhism - not to be confused with the lectures from Monja Coen or meditation for anxiety.
