The ₱1000 (we use ₱) had been redesigned this year using polymer. Previously, “abaca”, an indigenous plant related to the banana, has been used in banknotes from 2010. And now, the BSP (Central Bank of the Philippines) is asking users to minimize folding by using “longer wallets” or wallets designed to keep bills straight. They should have used polymer on ₱50 and ₱100 bills instead, like Malaysia did with their RM1 and RM2 bills, because these denominations are more commonly used (₱20 might soon be discontinued).

I am from the Philippines and handle money regularly, this is my insight of the perceived rarity of the 200 peso bill. The 200 peso is "rare" because its re-issue is relatively new (re-issued in 2002). Plus on the time it was released, the first design's reverse contained the image of then incumbent president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, which was dissed because it was deemed a politicking move for the 2004 presidential election. Also the Filipinos were so not used to the 200 denomination it was deemed inconvenient. When the 500 peso was released in 1987 due to the depreciating peso. It was the largest bill over the 100 peso. Filipinos were so used to handling 100s and 500s that it seemed unnecessary to have a 200 bill. When the 200 was re-issued, we felt awkward or surprised that there is a piece or two of 200 mixing with 100s and 500s, which meant people kind of hated them. The central bank prints bills by demand. Its unpopularity with the citizens and too low demand for the 200 forced the central bank to produce only 5 million for its first year, and it was never printed in 2005, 2006, and 2012, and was only printed in very small numbers for 2008 and 2010 series. Even with the new series, printing figures was so low that around only 8-10% of all Philippine banknotes come in the form of 200s. This perceived rarity also contributed to hoarding of this bills just like the two dollars. Often it was used for personal savings, as a wallet lucky charm, emergency cash, or just as a store of value like gold. You will frequently find some savings of Filipino people are all in 200 peso bills. Those above mentioned factors are what I think the reasons why that bill is "rare" in circulation.

I remember the time a P200 banknote prototype was first released on national TV and it first featured a smiling Gloria Arroyo with her infamous grin and her short hair then. I was still 7 years old back then and I'm new to collecting notes then.

Php 200 is rare possibly because it's the "newest" denomination. The 500 and 200 bills were removed from circulation in 1959; the 500 was reintroduced in 1987 but the 200 was not returned until 2002. That's 43 years without it circulating. Furthermore, 200 is in an awkward spot. We have 20, 50, 100, 200, 500, and 1000 bills. All of them (except 200) are easily "converitble" to each other (for example, 10 pieces of 100 can make 1000). However, the 200 bill has a gap: you can't make 500 from 200 without having to use another bill. This might seem like a small limitation, but when you think about the many, many transactions done with physical banknotes throughout a country of 110 million people, this little issue becomes huge.

You missed one historical detail embedded in all notes. The inclusion of “Baybayin” or the pre-colonial ancient writing script of the Philippines. One half of it (horizontally) is shown on each side of all notes. It may look like a random doodle for some.
@agreenkale4 жыл бұрын
You can actually read the Baybayin script if you look at the front side of the banknote with light. The bottom half of the Baybayin script is at the front of the banknote, and the top half is at the back. The top half of the Baybayin script, however, is printed in reverse so that you can read it in the front of the banknote. The Baybayin script written in the banknote is translated in Latin alphabet as "Pilipino", which refers to the citizens of the country. The Baybayin script is all the same with the other banknotes.

While I find the bills interesting, the coins are the most annoying thing. In the past, the coins were just as colorful and distinct (different mixes of bronze & silver color) as their bill counterparts but the PH Central Bank had the "brilliant" idea of redesigning them to be almost indistinguishable from one another. This is bad because of how confusing it is to pay for things in a rush which is how most Filipinos do given how perpetually bad traffic is. Obviously, it was designed by people who rarely use coins and personally, I think the team who okayed it should be demoted if not outright fired.

200 peso bill is rare because in Filipino we can say that the note is "alanganin" or awkward in value. In the Philippines, retails are very common in places we call sari sari store where we can buy cheaper commodities in much much smaller amount or volume than in a convenience store Thus, prices are usually just below 100 pesos to appeal to the masses. And paying 200 pesos for a shampoo costing 12 pesos would cause the retailer to use a lot of their change, making it really very difficult to use it anywhere unless buying alot. Its complicated because despite having larger face value than a dollar, Philippine Peso is way cheaper in value and change (coins) can be too many to break you coin purse if you do not use the right bill. To summarize Below 100 - we use P1 - P100 Above 100 - we use P500 - P1000 Its difficult to find an item that you can say sits on the middle.. which by the way speaks about the social structure we have. The poor who can only afford the less 100s and the rich who gets the upper bracket. No middle. Seriously none.

There's one more thing you forgot to mention. If you hold up a note against a light source, you can see the word "Pilipino" written in Baybayin, the native script of the Filipino language, at the bottom right side of the front of each note in the series.
@moondust23654 жыл бұрын
Technically, it's the native script of the Tagalog language, as Filipino, the standardized version of Tagalog with bits of other Philippine languages added in created by order of Pres. Manuel L. Quezon, was created _way_ after the fall of the usage of Baybayin. It has recently made a comeback thanks to linguists and the Filipino youth, along with other scripts such as Pampanga's Kulitan script.

Hi, Chris. With respect to the Philippine flag, when displayed vertically as in the video, it is not a simple matter of flipping it. How it is displayed actually depends on whether the Philippines is in a state of peace or state of war. If the Philippines is in a state of peace, blue is on the left, red on the right. Reverse if in a state of war. Nice video, by the way. Thank you for featuring the Philippine Peso. :-) PS. the Philippine coins you showed in the video are to be replaced by a new series which also have their cool features.

3:35 maybe the reason why it's rare is because the prizes of things are barely exact 200 Philippine pesos. The prizes of things in the Philippines that are usually considered expensive are starting from 100 Philippine pesos above. We Filipinos also struggle with 200 Philippine peso's rarity when buying things because we always need two pieces of 100 Philippine pesos. Only people of the Central Bank of the Philippines knows the exact reason.
@Dravignor3 жыл бұрын
The reason why the ₱200 bill is rarer is because the people have some belief that you should only spend it as a last ditch effort when you really have no money, otherwise keep it well hidden away from your other money. I don’t really know the origin of this superstition but that’s what my mom told me.
@raffimolero643 жыл бұрын

Perhaps the spelling mistake was deliberate,I'm sure it was checked many times over before release, perhaps it's there so at a quick glance,it's hardly noticeable so anyone trying to fake one may not notice?

For the English speaker whose trying to translate this with Google but can't because it was spelled in a slang way: It means _"you don't understand us haha. My fellow Filipinos, let us sell them out, hehe" (with a sinister grin). iVan how many English speakers do you think would believe my translation if I put this ^ here, hehe.

To add to that informing and entertaining presentation, all of our bills also feature Baybayin (Ancient Filipino writing system) printed half on the lower right hand corner of the front side and half on the lower left hand corner of the reverse side. When placed against a light source, these two halves seamlessly converge to form a four character script that when viewed from the front side correctly reads as "Pi Li Pi No"; Filipino. That aside, thank you very much for covering us.

Filipino here, and even I get excited whenever a 200-peso bill gets mixed in with my change. The pop of green color gives a refreshing sight. Also clueless as to why it is rare though
@zjzr084 жыл бұрын
It's very recent and there is a bit of irk as it was made during GMA's term -- that being said it fits nicely to the rainbow of bills we currently have and sad to see the P20 to be gone soon.
