Very good, Jacob!! I imported my husband from Finland; first thing he built was a sauna. He was also born in a sauna, middle of nowhere Finland. When visiting Finland I also was gifted the opportunity to experience a 200 year old smoke sauna near a lake- ahhh-mazing! Thank you for your courage in making this video!!

Speaking as a man who deals with feeling isolated and lacking positive male relationships (non sexual/romantic) we need more of these space and rituals. Thank you for sharing❤❤❤

In the 1890's, thousands of Finns moved to Northern Wisconsin and transplanted their culture here in America...so naturally...the saunas came with them :) I enjoy a hot steamy sauna followed by a roll in the snow followed by another sit in the sauna. It's super relaxing, cleansing both physically and spiritually, and just a nice way to clear your head. I wish I had my own Sauna...maybe I need to make that a priority. :) I didn't know about the sauna spirit, so thanks for that! ❤

I listened to an interview one time and I think it was an academic who studied Sauna culture. It was eye opening and deeply moving as I learned about stories of births and stories of washing the loved ones dead body in the sauna and women all in the same family gathered in the sauna to talk about private matters - like you would do in therapy or with really close friends. It was amazing. The sauna is deeply spiritual! Thanks for sharing Jacob! ❤

In the ancient times finnish babies were born in sauna and when people died they were washed in sauna for their last journey. A sacred place but also a place for winding down and to get together with friends.

There is something deeply comforting and womb-like (pretty sure the womb-like aspect is entirely intentional, too) about both sweat lodges and saunas. It is a beautiful and beneficial practice in either case! Thank you for making a video about the wonders of sauna practices! 💖

I love videos like this, exploring the ancient roots of culture, and how it's done correctly. My favorite part, I think, was when you were discussing how it's not always supposed to be pretty. There are supposed to be "ugly" parts, too. Ugly is just as much a part of life as beauty. :) ❤

When I took a moment to think about why, I had noticed that my spiritual path had seeped into literally every corner of my life, to where I was celebrating the ups with it and learning on it during the downs.

I remember helping my dad build a sauna when I was a kid. Loads of finnlanders in northern mn and saunas are everywhere. It's not a real sauna unless it's a wood burning stove and over 200 f. (Those electric gym saunas that only get mildly warm don't count) But be careful in small saunas, especially when bending over. Good way to get a nice brand. (Apparently this happened to my dad when he was young and he always lectured us not to bend over in a hot sauna, especially if the stove is behind you).

I've been to a few sweat baths on the Fort Apache Reservation and they are intense. Same principle as the sauna but its pitch black, 20 dudes crammed in together, singing and drumming in unison. A man starts to see things. Thank you for sharing the sauna with us Jacob!

In the 18th century, the Delaware Indians called Finns "people like us" because they used sweat lodges. Likewise, when the relationship between them and the settlers started to tighten, they did not attack the Finns' farms but left them alone because the Finns let them hunt an forage on their land. True story. In Finland, "everyone's right" is still valid, which means that everyone has the right to roam and forage in the forest, regardless of who owns it

Taking a sauna without beer at least for me is the same as courting a pretty woman all night and not getting laid, totally disappointing. Everyone has their own way of taking a sauna and their own sauna rituals and these are all right, there is not just one right way. Possibly the only important rule is that you can't argue in the sauna, it makes the sauna elf upset and it might leave and take the soul of the sauna with it and then it's useless. Greetings from Finland 🙂d

some additions from the finnic folklore. it was often the main ritual before and after any major happening or holiday, just like you said because of the purifying aspect (also they changed into clean clothes). with the volga finns it seems to have been connected to the moon (they bathed at "moon´s days"). also the death aspect might not be real, but birth and healing definitely are.. they´re kind of the opposites in most traditions (originally they avoided the graves here, because the ancestor cult was at home, it´s like death and ancestors, separate). also they left an empty place / separate turn for the ancestors in the saunas. there´s an interesting quote in the epic poems where they say that the löyly (steam) comes from the wood, warmth comes from the stone and the sweat comes from Väinämöinen (who is often connected to water, most of the "creator spirits" are connected to some element).

I admire Finnland so much from not too far away Germany. Hopefully not too far into the future I can spare the time to make a nice holiday there. Am afraid of the language though. Swedish will do in terms of listening and reading, because my language is relatively close related. But the only finnish words I can remember are Names from Kalevala and I pronounce them horribly, which People from Finnland attested me. :DD Weinermoinön. XD

First thing what my grandad built on cottages plot was a smokesauna, and then after that came the cottage. I don't know if this is a common custom/rituals, but when i am about to leave sauna and go to shower I will throw one last löyly for the saunatonttu and then leave.

I know that it's definitely not a one to one but I've felt so much comfort and camaraderie at kink events just with everyday people being allowed to be socially intimate while undressed. Being in the US feels so stifling sometimes when it comes to the simplicity of human form but having group cuddle piles and friendly body painting feels so true and natural. It doesn't have to be sexual. People there are so sweet and kind and respectful and I wouldn't trade the experience

My first experience of going into a sauna unfortunately was at the gym and I was told to go before and or after a workout. Being female I just wore my workout clothes. Unfortunately I had a bad reaction to the sauna. Also I work a deli behind a hot food case, some a lot. It is like a sauna but not really relaxing nor fun most of the time. I’m sure it would feel great in the frigid winter.

WTF Jacob? As a Finn, this is pure heresy! I don't know if I could ever forget this outrageous blasphemy that took place at 7:43. You raised your mug and all was fine and well until you said it. At the heart of the very essence of The Finnish Being, the holiest of holies, the purest soul bound thing that constitute every Finn, you said it! You spell a Swedish word! A SWEDISH! Kippis, hölkynkölkyn, pohjanmaan kautta, even some rude German curses, anything else but Swedish at the Finnish sauna! No, great content every sec. Skål from Finland! 😉
