Possibly dumb question, but I'm just starting to really look into methods rather than just trial and error. Is there any reason this fold couldn't be used with traditional liquid dyes? We have a dye day or two each summer and we're hoping to try some ice dying, but I just wanted to check if this could be done with the bottled dye instead of just ice. Thanks!

Soda ash (sodium carbonate) is the fixative. It reacts with cellulose to prepare the fabric to chemically react with the dye to bind it permanently.

Hi, I love all of your designs and colours! What I am interested in is the possibility of using liquid natural dyes on shirts. (I know that colours are generally less vivid and I am ok with that.) would all of your designs still work, or is the "powdered dye with ice method" necessary for the shirts to turn out this way? Thanks! :)

It's a cool pattern,but i think leaving a lot of the white in it would make the colors pop better. It needs the contrast imo

How do you avoid dark colors mudding up the lighter colors while you are rinsing? Or it doesn't because its sat for 24 hours? I feel like my light colors always get messed up....
@MystiqueRisingSun
@MystiqueRisingSun 7 жыл бұрын
All dye brands have a recommended "setting time" (anywhere from 4 to 24 hours)..so as long as you let it sit that long and rinse WHILE it's still banded, it should be fine. I know a lot of people get anxious to see the final result, so many will open the shirt, THEN rinse it, and usually long before that set time is up....both of which can cause the colors to mix in ways you don't want them to.

Would this design work without doing the ice dye method?
@MystiqueRisingSun
@MystiqueRisingSun 7 жыл бұрын
Yep! It's the way you fold your shirt and apply the dye that matters, not the dye method itself. You can use ice with powder dye, ice with liquid dye, just plain liquid dye, or washable white glue (lay shirt flat to apply the glue before dying - it's a pretty cool process, but you have to let the glue dry completely before dying, it gives the pattern more depth) with liquid dye.

Why are you supposed to take the ice off before they melt? (the fist time you dye the shirt)
@CrispyGuy
@CrispyGuy 9 жыл бұрын
Because there comes a point where the dye has already melted as deep into the shirt as it's needed, so all further ice is going to do is water down the dye, making your shirt more faded.

What chemical are you washing the shirt in AFTER the dye is set ,rinsed and you put in the washing machine
@CrispyGuy

Synthrapol... otherwise known as dyer's soap. Make sure you use just a tiny amount of it (half a capful at most), it's powerful stuff.

@MystiqueRisingSun

You can do it either way. Typically when using ice, the colors are often more faded/pastel-ish (when using the liquid dye), but with the powder, it becomes a bolder shade...plus it depends on how long you let the ice sit, too. It saturates more if you let the ice melt completely, but taking the ice off earlier means there is a chance it only penetrates through one layer (front or back) of the shirt instead of both sides....if you're careful, you can have the same design - but in different colors - on both sides with the powder...this is not possible with the liquid dyes. So...it really comes down to exactly how you want your shirt to come out as to which type of dye you use and what technique you use.
