My dad; God bless his soul; was blind, but he loved to work the wood, and he always took the chance to get me to help, and we used heavy tools, saws, nail guns, and all normal tools, but him being blind he also used them; he had Braille tools, so he could measure properly and place the stoppers on spot. We still use several furniture we made together over 20 years ago. Loved this episode because it reminded me of those days.

What a wonderful story, thank you for sharing it with me. I am so happy that this video made you think of your dad. Your dad was way braver than me, I never would have attempted wood working if I was blind, and I did not know there were Braille tools. I will be posting another shop video next Friday if you are interested. Till then, thanks for watching and sharing your story. God bless you and your dad. Mr. Ed

Nifty framing jig you have there. I thought of you and your bee videos when I heard on the news about a house that had 80,000 bees in it here in Missouri. I never heard what they did with the bees, hope they moved them to a bee house. Blessings!

A SHORT CUT IDEA FOR YOU??? - (great video, BTW!) The step you did at 3:12 on the radial saw - the first cuts - If you did the diagonal cuts at this point, rather than at 10:39 - Would this eliminate having to do the 800 cuts at the end? Also, it would waste less wood, because the initial cuts are at 45 degrees. (do one end, flip the board, and do the other side). So the cuts would look like this text representation: |x\. /. \. /. \x|. Where the 'x' are the end diagonal waste cutoffs (rather than:). what you have now for 10:39 which is |x\. /x| on every piece. Not sure if you'd need to, but maybe build another router push board jig with a 'v' notch cut out in the end to fit the new 45 degree pointed ends. - Peace be with you.

Good morning Jeff. I must say that I am quite impressed with the Abby’s wood shop. I suppose if I got rid of some of the clutter in our shop it would somewhat approach the efficiency of the Abby wood shop. I wonder how much time you invested in your jigs to stream line your process. You have managed to eliminate “haste makes waste” and ensure that you meet the requirements of “measure twice and cut once. Well it’s time for a mug of tea to get my day started. Enjoy your weekend, GB. Kate

Yup. I still want to play with the monks toys lol. I really like the idea work the lazy-susan. I think I will be putting one of those together real soon. Thanks for the idea. Most hobby workers don't have a shaper. Wish I did. Router table does just as good, but is generally a little lacking when it comes to dust collection. You don't cut a slot in it for an upper entrance / ventilation?
@JeffHorchoff6 жыл бұрын
The monks have a VERY nice wood shop, I am blessed to have access to it. The slot in the cover, in my opinion, is not necessary for ventilation as there are many other ways for the air to escape. Thanks for watching. God's peace Scott. Mr. Ed

Wow, thanks for all you kind words Jefferey. As a wood worker, you understand the satisfaction in building things yourself, and especially when it saves bucks. The lazy susan that I use is nothing special at all other than it's practicality, it saves so much wasted movement. It can be used in so many different places depending on one's need, and it's only limits are our imagination. My channel is not a wood working channel even though I do include some shop videos in it, after all, wood working was my first love. Thanks for watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed

Nice production workflow, Jeff. I'll offer two cents of unsolicited advice you can take or leave: You could probably skip the glue on the end grain without any real sacrifice off strength or longevity, while also speeding up the process a bit. The face gluing you are already doing between the panel and the frame is many times stronger and longer lasting than the glue on those mitered ends. For what it's worth. Peace!
@JeffHorchoff6 жыл бұрын
I agree 100% the glue and stapling around the plywood edge is where all the strength is derived from. You will notice in the video I post this Friday, I bypassed the glueing of the ends, it is not necessary. I love you avatar, do you do metal work, wood work or both? Guessing, I'd say it was a 4 or 6 inch wood lathe jaw chuck. Looking forward to hearing from you again. God's peace. Mr. Ed

Mr. Ed, I'll look forward to the new video! I hesitate to poke my nose in other's work, but I thought it might help. Yes, I've been a professional woodworker for big chunks of my professional life, and I've been an amateur machinist since college in the 80s. That's supposed to be a machinist's six inch, independent, four-jaw chuck in the avatar. Good eye! If it's acceptable to the brothers at the Abbey and something you'd be interested in doing, I'd love to see an overview of the casket making process there in the shop. Talk about craftsmanship with heart! Happy making!
@JeffHorchoff6 жыл бұрын
It's sad to say, but we have only one monk that works in the casket shop, and he's 82. There in lies the problem, the medium age of monks is about 65, and those that are strong enough to walk, are used in the educating of the seminarians at the seminarian college. Your words about " craftsmanship with heart " could not bee any truer. Of the 24 folks that work in the casket shop, only 3 of them are employees of the abbey, the rest, like myself, are volunteers. The reality of the venture is it is a ministry before it is a business, and all of us who work there consider our work our prayer.....just like the monks. Of all the different occupations I have been in or associated with, none have the atmosphere of St. Joseph Wood Works. I do plan on making a shop video one day to really show the ingenuity, integrity, and craftsmanship of our caskets so that others can have a peak into how running a business can bee both profitable and enjoyable, the monks benefit from the profit, we benefit from the joy of giving. God's peace brother. Mr. Ed

There's a lot of satisfaction in making your own equipment. I did the same when I kept bees, even rolling my own wax. That way I knew I wasn't putting infected stuff into my hives. All the best from the UK.
@JeffHorchoff6 жыл бұрын
The stuff I make is way better that what you can buy and it lasts twice as long. Just makes sense to me to build it myself, plus I really enjoy working in the shop doing it. I do the same with my wax. I give back to our bees what I took from their hive, and since I don't treat, it's all GOOD stuff. Thanks for watching and commenting, great comment. God's peace brother. Hello Mr. Ed. Thank you so much for your great videos. Would it be possible for you to show us how your lazy Susan was build/put together? I' guess many beekeeping wood workers would interested. Greetings from Michigan.
@JeffHorchoff5 жыл бұрын
The Lazy Susan is simply a mechanical device I bought from Home Depot and then mounted on plywood. It's not rocket science, and I'm sure you could do it easily. It really helps in assembly when the entire project can rotate. God's peace Bert. Mr. Ed

Love your vids. My only problem is I wish you showed actually cutting the wood. Being a wood noob. 🧐 I like to see the whole process. Especially using the router and table saw.
@JeffHorchoff Жыл бұрын
I would love to show the process more in depth, especially the cutting and shaping of the wood, but as the channel is about bees, most of my viewers care little for that. However, I'm like you, a real "wood noob," and the process fascinates me and I never tire of seeing it. Thanks for watching. God's peace Terry. Mr. Ed

We are all the same person. The name "Mr. Ed" was given to me when I first started working at the Post Office 36 years ago. When I retired after 27 years, I liked it so much, I continued to call myself that. Then, when I started my KZbin channel, that's what I decided to call myself. Thanks for watching. God's peace. does the beekeeping branch of the abbey have a budget of wood, or does the abbey just get alot of wood for all projects and its free game?

Hello Jeff I live in the UK and I should say early on I as yet am not a bee keeper but it is something I aspire to. I have started on that route as I have a pair of hive tools sitting on my desk. My partner Linda and I regularly watch your bee keeping videos as well as those of 628DirtRooster and JPthebeeman for myself I particularly like your workshop videos where you have shown your building/assembly methods, and methods of wax refining recovery. I was wondering if you could put together a play list of those videos? Are your Bee Hives built to the Lagsdorf dimensions? My first move would to build these as 3D graphical models (this is what I do while not watching your you tube videos) then to eventually build a hive for real using my limited wood working skills. At present I think I have all of the required tools except the Table Saw. If I had the drawings and a 3D model built it may be possible Linda would let me get one. Are there a set of drawings for your Bee Vac? If nothing else I want to thank you for putting something on you tube that is entertaining non violent and non political.
@JeffHorchoff4 жыл бұрын
What a great comment Jim, thank you for it. Yes, I think you are well on your way to becoming a bee keeper, and from watching your mentioned KZbin channels, it confirms the fact and you are getting good info. By the way, we are all very good friends so you can easily understand why I say that. In my opinion, it is not necessary to build your own bee boxes when it is usually cheaper just to buy pre manufactured ones, and way easier as well. Because of your weather conditions, and also the popularity of the choice in materials in the UK, you should look into the polystyrene bee hives. I do not have drawings for my bee vac as I just build from my mind, it's more creative for me that way and I'm very lazy. So glad you enjoy watching, thank you for that. God's peace brother. Mr. Ed
@jimclark88454 жыл бұрын
@@JeffHorchoff No that's fine Jeff thanks for the response money is an issue for me so using my skills can seriously reduce my costs I also have a good source of recycled timber similar to your off cut source from making caskets. As for weather considerations I have a free source of block ethane foam so I and so I can make can also insulated external sleeves. It's almost ironic that because I have type two diabetes I will probably not be harvesting much honey other than an occasional taste test but I do seriously want the bees to prosper. We have a Honeysuckle bush in our front garden that each year it is host to a load of tree bees (non honey bees) the hive must be local and we enjoy seeing those every year. You keep making video and we will keep watching. God bless you too brother.
