Secrets & Scandals of The Good Life
The Good Life (1975 TV Series): A British Sitcom Classic
"The Good Life," also known as "Good Neighbors" in the United States, is a British sitcom produced by BBC television. Airing from 1975 to 1978, the show was created by John Esmonde and Bob Larbey. It stars Richard Briers, Felicity Kendal, Penelope Keith, and Paul Eddington.
Background
The story follows Tom Good, who, on his 40th birthday, decides to leave his job as a plastics designer and pursue a self-sufficient lifestyle with his wife, Barbara, in their suburban home in Surbiton. The series explores their efforts to live independently, generating their own electricity, growing their own food, and raising animals, which brings them into comedic conflict with their conventional neighbors, Jerry and Margo Leadbetter.
Cast and Characters
Tom Good (Richard Briers): The protagonist who initiates the self-sufficiency lifestyle.
Barbara Good (Felicity Kendal): Tom’s supportive and resourceful wife.
Margo Leadbetter (Penelope Keith): The Goods’ snobbish but well-meaning neighbor.
Jerry Leadbetter (Paul Eddington): Margo’s husband and Tom’s old colleague, who is skeptical of the Goods’ new lifestyle.
Production
Outdoor scenes were filmed in Northwood, London, although the series is set in Surbiton. Interior scenes were filmed at BBC Television Centre. The show's theme music was composed by Burt Rhodes.
Popularity and Legacy
"The Good Life" was highly popular, coming 9th in Britain's Best Sitcom poll in 2004. It has influenced various media and inspired adaptations and mockumentaries. The show continues to be celebrated for its humor and the timeless appeal of its characters.

"The Good Life" is one of the most beloved British sitcoms ever. Millions tuned in to watch the hilarious antics of the Goods and the Leadbetters, two unique couples living in Surbiton. While the show was known for its cosy charm- even the Queen herself was a fan-it also had a surprisingly sharp edge, tackling issues like mid-life crises, drunken wife-swapping, and chickens named after famous Communists.
"Secrets & Scandals Of The Good Life" unveils the behind-the-scenes truths of how this unlikely British sitcom success was created.
The documentary highlights how a special Royal episode, requested by the Queen, was nearly ruined by a Blue Peter dog on the recording day. It also delves into the off-screen friendships of the cast, including a near-disastrous dinner party, and uncovers personal scandals involving the sitcom's stars.
Additionally, the show reveals that the cast could have been very different, and the sitcom almost took a completely different direction with the original idea of filming on a yacht.
The documentary also explores how the show addressed the role of women, featuring the infamous episode with the Goods' home brew that nearly led to adultery. It reveals the producers' struggle to allow female characters to drink on screen and discusses the scandalous press treatment of Felicity Kendall's iconic character, Barbara.

Yes, The idea that Felicity Kendall was given 'rough' clothes and made to look a mess was not a negative. It just increased her attractiveness. She was, an extremely attractive woman. She would have looked good in a bin bag. Then there is the scene where she's in bed in a flimsy nightie with the light oh so accidentally illuminating her just right. They knew exactly what they were doing with her.

I haven't watched TV in years. It seems like great TV is a distant memory for me. All the woke ideologies and political agendas has got into everything. It would be great to sit down and watch a show that was made, purely for entertainment purposes. Even the commercials have gone the same way.

The only thing that spoiled it for me was that Felicity was so gorgeous but her husband? How did they end up being a pair? It might have been a bit more believable if he was supposed to be her uncle but then the storyline would have been completely rewritten. Nevertheless, I'd have still watched every week even if it was just Felicity reading the telephone directory for the entire show.

My Dad worked full time 40+hours a week annd grew vegerables and grew flowers from the early 1950s right up to the 2000s, though he had the help of my Brother from the late 1960s. Most people in those times did grow their own. Otherwise we would not of been able to afford to eat. But people rarely do this today. People used to chat over the fence about their vegetables or argue about their borders and only cutting your side of the hedge!!😂

G'day Alan, Well, not too many real, "Secrets and Scandals"; but a generally entertaining program, the 'over-the-top' narrator notwithstanding. Well cast central characters and solid scripts were the true highlights; and cleverly the producers, et al, knew when enough was enough. Like, 'Fawlty Towers'; a finite 'lifespan' seems to ensure fond memory longevity. The other programs in this series are not as well known to me. Anyway, thanks again, except although every male in this video agreed that FK had the 'best bum in the business' we never got a 'parting glance' at it for old time's sake. Pity. Cheers, Bill H.

The Good Life (or here in America, Good Neighbors) was and still is at the top of all-time favorite British Comedies for us. Sunday nights we were treated to their adventures on our local Public Broadcasting Station KERA-TV Dallas/Fort Worth and they, along with Fawlty Towers, Open All Hours, 'Allo, 'Allo and the inimitable Monty Python gave us our proper education on how to do Comedy in its most excellent form. And I am speaking for every red-blooded American male when I say we all, to a man, found Penelope Keith and Felicity Kendal absolutely dishy. British women were always sexy and never, ever go out of style.

The Royal Command Good Life was given the cover of Radio Times. It was definitely billed at a certain time. The implication they "cut the World Cup match" especially to show The Good Life isnt true. Not least because ITV were showing the match! The BBC had arranged for the Royal Command show to go out on a Saturday night. They "cut" the World Cup in so much as they decided not to show that game allowing ITV to do so. Of course it sounds more dramatic the way it was told in the show, which had to live up to its rather spurious title!

Peep Show. Derry Girls. Ghosts. Outnumbered. The challenge is the lack of investment in both time and budget to _nurture_ a sitcom, allowing the characters to develop and bed-in. in 1984 there were 60 newly-commissioned studio sitcoms. By 2004 it was seven - and in 2023, none were commissioned at all. 😞

@@emucat1 Thank You!...... Gotta love these people like yamxv blaming the Tories for everything: What a joke! Fact One: It was a Labour Government that proposed ending the Free School Milk....but lost the subsequent General Election. Fact Two: It was a Labour Government which finally realised that British coal was uneconomic and a serious health hazard/ pollutant and THEY said mines MUST shut. (The USA had already realisied this and was protecting its reserves by closing THEIR mines...... And stockpiling oil as, allegedly: It could be cut off at the Arabs whim.) Fact Three: It was a Labour Government under Blair that demanded "cheap credit" for all...... That turned out well......didn't it. The Credit Crunch ensued just as many predicted. I agree with you: Brexit was inevitable but there are too many mouths to feed at the trough for all those deadwood EU Politicians and those in the UK miffed at missing the Euro Gravy Train. Which why it has been so poorly handled since the Referendum......The Democracy of Westminster is NOT working. And has not done so for far too many years. Any more proof needed? France and Germany are also trying to figure out a way to solve the current EU crisis....which is dragging them both down. The two main remaining players. And both countries are being deluged with uncontrolled illegal immigration (Stop it with the "Asylum Seekers " nonsense..) Which in the UK was instigated under Blair & Labour. Now check out Sweden and Ireland.....both countries known for their laid-back attitude to world affairs...... All looking mighty grim. All thanks to the EU & their misguided policies. Remember too...how the EU ORDERED Eire to have another referendum when they Democratically rejected the "Lisbon Treaty"? Now look at the problems in Eire...... Some folk need to demand a stop to the Pendulum Politics of the UK: Because it has cost the country, financially & socially since 1945. It has to stop.
