@@Keithjames153nah. Leftists generally despise autocrats and overreach of authority. However, a lot of Centrist Liberals do tend to have a bent towards authoritarianism. @@buddygrimfield7954 well to be fair I dnt intend to do anything.. I’m right wing by philosophy not by political tribalism so I’m no fan of trump. But what would say about that case with the web designer in Denver.. to me the left wanted to compel her to be required by LAW to design a website for a gay couple even if she didn’t want to while the right was like “why is this even a question, she’s a free citizen if she doesn’t want to design a website she doesn’t have to, no intervention needed.” That to me is a good example of the left being authoritarian… what’s your take on that?
@buddygrimfield7954

@@Keithjames153 I know of no such new Bill(s) having been introduced. Are you sure that you are not talking about the long since anti-discrimination laws? Do you recall the name of the Bill? And who introduced it? However, I have to admit that I would be somewhat conflicted about such a scenario. On one hand, I do agree with people who say that the owner of a business reserves the right to decline service. On the other hand, I also agree with those who say that discrimination based on someone's race, creed, sexual orientation etc. is not a valid reason to deny goods and services to a person. At least not without there being some legal repercussion(s). So, my answer to your question is yes. But it is not so cut and dry. Ultimately, I believe that the store owner should have the right to oblige or deny a service or product. However, it should also be the right of those who are refused said goods and services, to sue the ass off of the company in question. if the sole (stated) reason for the denial was based on the sexual orientation of the customer(s). Ust as the owner should (and does) have the right to contest the lawsuit in court, should they wish to do so. Anyway, yes. That would be an example of authoritarianism from the Left, if what you say they are trying to enact into law is true. Nevertheless, at least they are not trying to force women to birth unwanted children. What could possibly be more authoritarian than that??

Right-wingers have no problem with dictatorships or authoritarianism, as long as THEY get to be the ones who are in charge. Right-wingism is inherently authoritarian because being on the right is really just about being on the side of the royalty/nobility, and historically, right-wingers have been the royalty/nobility, so right-wingism is really just the wealthy social elites being in favor of themselves. It really is that simple, and it always has been. It's just getting harder and harder for them to hide the truth of this in the modern era. And they have to hide it, because a plain reading of that political ideology is repulsive to 99.999% of people, because 99.999% of people don't get to the be the dictator.

100% correct. The second that the Bolsheviks took power in 1918, what happened? All the imperialist nations sent soldiers and weapons to support the White Army despite the fact that World War I had just destroyed Europe and the fact that the main European countries were broke from the costs of warfare. What happened when Salvador Allende's coalition took power DEMOCRATICALLY in Chile? First the US applied economic sanctions and tried to "make the economy scream", then after that didn't work, we supported the overthrow of the democratically elected government by General Augusto Pinochet. And what was the reasoning? As Henry Kissinger put it, "I don't see why we need to stand by and watch a country go communist due to the irresponsibility of its people. The issues are much too important for the Chilean voters to be left to decide for themselves." And despite the official line in the media, the Pentagon, and the State Department at the time; the real problem for the US was not that Chile would fail as a country under Allende's leadership and become some totalitarian society (because Allende was as committed to democracy as anyone on Earth and the US knew that), it was the danger that Chilean socialism would succeed and demonstrate that socialism can be democratic, thus showing the global working class that socialism was a real option if you want both freedom and equality. The US and our elites have always pretended to care about democracy, and the truth is that democracy only matters to the extent that the capitalists can capture and control it. Once democracy is captured in some way by the proletariat, it becomes a threat to capital and it's guaranteed to be overthrown OR subverted (as it is in the US).

"American Interests" is essentially the focal point of this whole debate. And sometimes, concepts like "democracy," "liberty," and "human rights" aren't a part of "American interests," plain and simple. Sometimes it boils down to vital resources - energy sources, food, minerals, what have you - or security concerns in key regions of the world. It would be ideal to have pro-American democracies in most countries, but from Washington's viewpoint, a pro-American dictatorship or oligarchy is preferable to an anti-American democracy, plain and simple, so long as the U.S. gets what it wants.

To be fair, foreign policy is extremely contentious because each individual nation has their own culture, values, and sensibilities. But, I really don’t think advocating for despotic regimes as “sometimes necessary” is ideal. It depends on the dictatorship. Napoleon was a dictator (he preferred the title Emperor) and he modernized economic systems, invented free religion as a state mandate, and created many equality policies that at the time (very early 1800s) were revolutionary and blasphemous to the monarchies of Europe. There's no such thing as inherently good or bad governments it's all in what they do.

@@adriankovac1943 He only started the peninsula war and invasion of Russia (which led to the last coalition war). Every other coalition war against him (and France) weren't started by him. Most of them were started by the UK who were bribing nations to fight France. Also the first coalition war was started by the French Revolution and nations angry that France overthrew their monarchy and he was only a commander at that time not in charge.

Dictatorship is inherently bad because of the power structure (entire populace owned by one man) even a purely benevolent dictator would be preserving a power structure which is directly incentivized to commit atrocities to preserve elite control

I get where you're coming from, but I disagree almost completely. For me, the overriding focus should always be on how the system is set up, not on individual decisions or short-term outcomes. We should assume that politicians are going to be as evil as they can get away with being, and set up the system to minimize their ability to be evil. From that perspective, a representative democracy run by corrupt, selfish wannabe dictators is far preferable to an actual dictatorship run by a saint. The former system has a future. The latter system will turn into hell on earth as soon as the saint dies and his spoiled son takes over.

@@hylomorpherhe existence of the US by itself kinda disproves that theory of why it's better. Even if you have monarchs who are good but then get bad apple you can still get good monarchs. Make a system where only the corrupt gather together to rule you end up with a slow broken system that can't progress fast enough to deal with crisis and you're stuck in that system until a power hungry dictator usually right wing comes along.
