The reason why they're saying mail in voting benefits Dems is because poorer people that don't own a car are going to find it much easier to vote by mail instead of having to use public transportation to go to a polling place in person. And poorer people are more likely to vote Democrat because the Democrats support social policies that help them economically.

When I lived in Texas I wanted to vote but they didn't let me use a student ID so I had to get a different ID. The forms they wanted for the ID that I could vote with: Proof of residency -- lease + utility bill Proof of employment -- W2 Proof of identity -- passport And I barely scraped by with these things because my apartment building never sent me physical utility bills. This was ridiculous. Most people don't have at least one of these things. They don't just want ID, they want a roadblock. Blatant voter suppression.

What's funny is they ask for two of those things when you register, and if you don't have an IDN to provide you can use your birth number. If they want to ask for these things again, at the polls, they need to allow people to use their birth umbers instead, those are free and given to your at birth.
@mariusfacktor3597

@Craig Bowers That's a good idea. Maybe they don't want to give out registration IDs because they like the ability to purge the registration roll at any time and make you have to re-register for no reason.

While working a polling location on a college campus this year, I experienced something else these people don't think about... college students. Here's a common situation we encountered: 18-year old student registered to vote when they got to campus, using the campus address. Student's driver's license has the address they lived at when they were 16. Student lives in a dorm, so they don't have things like utility bills. Other potential identifying documents like bank accounts, phone bills, and car insurance are all set to mommy and daddy's address. The best they could do is to pull up a copy of their campus housing agreement. They are likely to move every school year, so asking them to get a new driver's license each time is a bit of a stretch. I'm actually going to see if I can find a person in ASU's Educational Outreach and Student Services department to work with on providing better resources for students to prepare them for voting; just to make sure they are registered properly and have the necessary ID. Maybe that will make a difference for them and the poll workers in 2024. Then there's the alternate scenario where that student registered in their home city but is now on campus with no easy way to return home just to vote. I was completely baffled by the number of students who had no idea whether or not they were registered to vote in Maricopa county and were confused when the check-in computers couldn't find them. I would ask, "Are you registered to vote in Maricopa county?", and they would answer with something like, "Maybe." or "I think so." And then they would have me get them a provisional ballot, because they enjoy wasting everyone's time. Here is another fun situation... Arizona has stricter identification laws than the federal government for voter registration, so voters sometimes get registered "federal-only" if they were unable to provide proof of U.S. citizenship at the time when they registered to vote. The people registering them either don't tell them that this matters, or they don't drill it into the voter hard enough for him/her to remember that they have to take additional steps if they want to vote a full ballot that includes state contests. People get very angry when they show up to vote on Election Day and find out that they can't vote for Governor, Secretary of State, state legislature, or ballot initiatives. We did, however, have one hero who showed up the Thursday before Election Day, found out he was federal-only and that the deadline for changing that status was 5 p.m. that day so he went out and got a state I.D., faxed a copy to the County Recorder's Office and had them update his voter status, then came back a few hours later so he could vote a full ballot. We applauded him, but was it really necessary to make him jump through those hoops?

Here in Australia, we run our elections on a Saturday...we have an increasing percentage who vote via mail or pre-polling. In case people are unaware of what that means, we open the voting several weeks before the actual election and people can vote early. I should also add all our votes are done with paper ballots, so there is no chance of electronic interference and a record is kept that can be audited at any time. Furthermore, we have an independent agency that manages seat boundaries and how many seats as population changes. Lastly, we do have mandatory voting, but the point being our system provides every opportunity for everyone to vote and we make it as easy as possible.

I've heard it is quite difficult to vote in the US. Here in New Zealand we vote on a Saturday, polling booths are at local schools, churches, community halls etc. and are never more than a 10 -15 minute walk from your house if you are in a town or city. No party support canvassing is allowed near the polling booths which are run by volunteers who get a small amount of money for their time. They are professional and helpful checking you are registered if you have the voter id sent out to your home or a valid id like a drivers license or birth certificate. The polling booths are also open 2 weeks before the election date but with restricted hours and from 9 am until about 7 pm on the Saturday and then the votes are counted by impartial independent counters. You are not restricted to any particular polling place and can vote anywhere. Voter turn out is usually in the 80-90% range of eligible voters, non-partisan transport to polling booths is available for people who can't get there easily.

In Germany it works like this - we have laws that require you to register where you live, then you can either vote by mail or walk to the nearest polling station (most of the time not more than a 10 minute walk) where they have lists with all the residents of that area or district. No voting machines. Everything is done on paper and I never had to wait in line for more than 10 minutes. And voting is always on a Sunday. There aren't legitimate reasons, never were. The whole conservative gripe with mail-in ballots was a result of Covid when they knew that mail-ins would be overwhelmingly blue. That's it. Conservative media made a calculated attack on mail-ins for no other reason than they knew it didn't favor Trump. It would seem they had the "mail-in ballots bad" talking point in their back pocket because they didn't know that pretty much every election denier candidate would get blown out of the water. I think they think it makes fraud easier, but I still don't totally understand it. You still have to be registered to vote, and in most states you still have to request a ballot. It's basically the same as showing up to a polling place on election day; the only difference would be states that require ID. But even then, it's still the same penalties for fraud, and it still doesn't let you just receive a dozen ballots and send them in. They still use signature verification. I think it's really as simple as they just suppress voter participation.

I live in Hobart, Tasmania, and while Federal & State elections are mandatory, they recently made local Council (county) elections mandatory, and 100% mail in ballot. You receive your ballot in the mail, and you have 2 weeks to return it by hand or in the post. Anyone without an address can register to pick it up from designated locations (e.g. post office). Also, all votes are ranked choice voting... And about 1 week later they announce the results. Job Done. and literally NO ONE whines about it.

I like not having to take the time to wait in line and go thru the process of filling all of that information out on the spot. Voter ID is not bad because you need your ID to vote. Voter ID is bad because the address on that ID (driver's license or identification card) defines WHERE you are allowed to vote. Then the voting centers are divided into disctricts, (which can be confusing) and poor areas tend to have voting centers that are difficult to get to if you do not have transportation. THAT is why the voter ID laws are racist and wrong. Law requires your job to give you up to 3hrs of time to vote during the work day. If you have to walk to the voting center, only to find out you're in the wrong one you are FUCKED.

Apparently in Texas, drivers' licenses and student IDs are not valid IDs, and they require 3 forms of proof of residency. So two of the most likely forms of ID aren't valid ID. If you don't travel, you probably don't have a passport, so that's a third form of ID gone for a lot people, a W2 may qualify you, but if you're unemployed, that's gone for you too. Voter ID is a shit idea all around.

The problem isn't that people don’t know enough about the candidates its that these days the people know too much. In the days of three corporate owned 24 hour news channels and only three networks giving people a half an hour of news at night of which maybe ten minutes actually cover issues important to people on a given night if we are lucky, it was much easier to get people to be more susceptible to what these networks are saying and get people to not understand who the candidates are and what they stand for. Now, you can get more information in a 15 second Tik Tok more or leas one of Kyle's videos, than these clowns give on a daily basis. That is problem the electorate is smarter than they are so now that they can't just be lulled to sleep so easily anymore, its time to find new ways to shut them up. That is what this dude really means.

If we can do banking on the internet, why not voting? Though to be fair, the US government is always several steps behind on technology. Unfortunately that’s intentional so that it’s always reliant on private enterprise, and I don’t trust private enterprise to do internet voting.

@@Andrew-cs1td also private enterprise. Thankfully voting machines are offline and in a physically protected location. Even if a single machine breaks, there are still physical receipts and it’s isolated to a single machine. Online, a break in the system would be a break everywhere simultaneously. Even so, I would prefer voting machines were built by the state, but the mere mention of the state having its own industrial capability sends conservatives into a blind fury. Without voting machines, the whole process would take significantly longer since every single ballot would need to be counted by hand. Taking forever to count the votes is one of the reasons people are so mad about elections as of late.

@@Andrew-cs1td my point was never that private companies would rig the elections, since they’d be found out, but that the internet produces far more avenues to cut corners which could leave massive security vulnerabilities if we leave it to private enterprise. Banks have high security because it’s their money, but counties won’t have the expertise to properly vet an online voting firm. So a single national election platform built to handle hundreds of millions of users at once, held to maximum accessibility standards, uses military grade encryption, and is combined with a national voter ID program, would be the only reasonable approach to online voting.

I agree in a different reason. Hear me out: I think every single person should not be able to vote in elections if they don’t understand the policies that they are voting on. I think there should be a test for each single item on the ballot. Here’s why, it effects peoples lives directly. If you can’t prove you understand what you are doing and what you are voting on, you shouldn’t be voting in the first place. As for candidates, I think all money should be removed from politics and term limits enacted. And they should be held legally responsible for any and all bad things that happen because of their policies. That would cut down on the corruption and BS.

Texas resident. Due to a family emergency, I couldn't renew my driver's license online. My only option was to schedule an appointment with the TX DPS. The earliest appointment was 2 weeks later and the office was located on the other side of town. Since TX DPS is only open 8-5, I had to request a 1/2 day off with my employer. The appointment lasted 5 minutes. The idea of a paper ballot is a misunderstanding of the current election process. When a person votes at an electronic machine, the voter is asked to verify the selection of each election on the machine. The machine prints a ballot, which the voter must verify as correct, and deposit the ballot into the machine that processes the ballot. It would be very rare to discover a county using hand written ballots when it is easier to count machine printed ballots.

If polling stations are going to require ID to vote, then getting an ID should be entirely covered by taxes, and people should be reimbursed for transportation costs to the DMV (or wherever they need to go to get the ID) and also reimbursed for any time they have to take off of work to get it. In fact, if there is no holiday for voting, people ought to be reimbursed for taking time off work to vote, and also the transportation costs. Otherwise, it's senseless to call voting a right.

Another issue with voter id is often only drivers license and state ids count. Not student ids. Not everyone gets a car for their 16th birthday. A lot of voters don’t see the need to get an ID until their 21 birthday. This discourages voters between the age of 18-21.

In Brazil, any official document with your photo on it can be used for identification when voting, it includes id, passport, worker card, drivers licence and I think a few others. And a fingerprint recognition system is being implemented so even widout a document you will be able to be identified just using your fingers. Here voting happens on Sundays and it is a holiday (so even certain things that don't stop on Sundays close) on and if you have a job that can't stop happening, you must have at least the morning or the afternoon free. Most cities get free public transport on voting day. Let's see if republicans would support all of this.
