In this episode of Cloud Security Basics, Carter Morgan speaks to how you can secure data that is in rest and data that is in transit. Specifically, he talks about how the features of Google Cloud - such as encryption at the application layer, Google Front End Servers, and cryptography of data via Google Cloud RPC mechanisms - work to isolate customer data from potential threats.

My question is that , when my data is encrypted , then how can my WiFi service provider ( "HOP") still able to access my search history and other stuff?! 🙄

Broadly speaking they cannot see what exactly you searched. Only that you visited google.com, same for every website. They don't see the directories of the pages you're trying to access, (e.g. microsoft.com/how_to/download_viruses) they only see a request to microsoft.com. In that sense, your ISP can see what websites you go to, but not exactly where you went, hence the large public approval for "VPN"s. These route your traffic through a private server, and then to the website you desire. This private server is the only thing your internet service provider (or ISP) can see a connection to. So instead of Verizon seeing microsoft.com they only see you sending information to your VPN, they cannot see what information (the website you're trying to go to). Your VPN's internet service provider on the other hand CAN see that data now. Instead of: Siddhant > ISP > Google.com In this one the ISP can see you went to Google.com you get: Siddhant > ISP > VPN > Google.com In this one the ISP can see you connected to a VPN The VPN can see you went to Google.com The tradeoff comes down to whether or not you want your internet service provider to be able to see that you went to Microsoft.com or if you want it to show up in your VPN's ISP logs. The benefit of the VPN logs is that millions of other users use these same services, so to pinpoint it back to you requires much more effort than your ISP (Verizon, Comcast, etc) who dedicate you as an individual ONE IP address which is tied to your house. Pick a good, well-known, and secure VPN and you can hide your traffic from your Internet Service Provider. Does this answer your question?
