Securing my YETI cooler to prevent theft

I used one inch by quarter inch bar steel and welded a link from a chain to form a bracket to fit into the side slot in the cooler to which the bracket can be locked to a cable or chain. Yeti does sell a bracket like this for about $13 online but I had the scrap metal around to make a stronger one.

Excellent idea. For a good portion on the video I thought it was Robert De Niro narrating

Nice video. My Yeti 65 was stolen a few weeks ago. I did not have it secured. I have since replaced it with another 65 and that sucker is going to be locked down good!!!

Wow, sorry to hear that you had one stolen. Best bet is "out of sight out of mind" they can't steal what they can't see. But if you have no choice, then lock it up and make it harder for them to just walk off with it. Good luck with your new one!

If you run the other end of the chain through the handle and then through the loop, you will not need a lock. Locks are easy to pick.

I have a long shank American padlock that I run thru one of the holes on the cooler and put a cable to that, so it can’t walk off or get snagged by a bear

That’s a great idea win you you think about it why spend the money win you can make it your self I am from Arkansas use to you did not have to worry about theft but now you do it’s sad you can’t have anything without a punk trying to steal it but like I said great idea and it saved you a few bucks

The problem with all that work is all someone needs is a crescent wrench to unscrew the nuts at the seat. Lol. Then they can use an angle grinder to cut away all the locks, etc. locks only keep an honest man honest.

I agree. It's really meant for the opportunistic thief. If you have tools, then it's not going to stop anyone

very cool. way stronger than what yeti sells.. if I wanted to steal a yeti cabled up this way I would use a knife and a hand held torch to heat up the blade red hot and melt the plastic till I could remove the metal L bracket.. you average goone will see your setup and just keep on walking. I also advise people to not advertise with there yeti stickers.. they scream.. LOOK INSIDE... THERE MAY BE A 300 + DOLLAR COOLER INSIDE... also you sound like Robert Deniro.
@phwlee

Great comment! I agree, I don't advertise my belongings. My truck has tinted windows (Florida) and I usually throw a towel over the cooler too. I think the fastest way to get the cooler without damaging it would be to cut the cable but you can always use chain if you wanted to make it a little tougher. I happen to have that cable hanging around. And it's a first being told I sound like Robert DeNiro.

put a sign in the truck window stating that the Yeti is locked down and impossible to steal, thereby avoiding broken windows.

The first thing you should do is REMOVE the YETI sticker!!!!! Personalize it. Slap on a bunch of stickers. Make it yours! But stop advertising “I’m a YETI. Please steal me!”😊

Yes, if that is something they happen to have with them at the time. And even with a ratchet and the right size socket, it'll still take about a minute to remove the two nuts. But then, I recently moved the cooler to the bed of the truck (because I needed to put the seat back in) and now it's locked to the bed at those anchoring points and out of sight as well

does it shut all the way with that on?
@phwlee
@phwlee 7 жыл бұрын
Yes it does. In fact, there is still some space in between. With the lid closed and latched, the bracket is still free and can wiggle around.

Awesome! I cant wait to make one for mine. Props to you buddy. How thick was that peice? 3/16?
@phwlee
@phwlee 7 жыл бұрын
It was a piece of 1/4" by 1" that I had laying around. 3/16" will work fine too. If you can't get the 90 degree bend (I used my forge to get it hot enough to bend) just weld it from two pieces and grind it down nice and smooth. Good luck with yours!
