Security Breach has officially been out for a year now, and with our newfound power of hindsight, I feel it's finally time for me to talk about it.

AKA: the guy who first pointed out that the official SB Playstation description called fnaf "family friendly horror" finally contributes something
Absoloutly MASSIVE thanks to my editors ThatGingerFlynn, Atsaw, VALOR, Voltan and MisterMatt for making this video possible. 15,000 words and over an hour of video and we got it done in less than a month. Bravo everyone
So for my first major fnaf video since Siege of castle scawthon, I thought a big Security Breach retrospective was in order. I may not have "solved" security breach (and neither did Funaff), but after a full years worth of countless fnaf news updates, three full Game Theory eps, and the birth of a new generation of Fnaftubers, I think it was finally time for me to get my two cents in about fnaf's biggest release to date. I'm no Raycivick or Sagen Hawkes, but I thought I'd at least put my thoughts out for the world to see.
I also probably would've spilt this into a few parts and called it "What Scott Cawthon did to Five Nights at Freddy's" but hey, the amazing The Cursed Judge already used that title

thanks for defending matpat lol im not a fan of all his theories, some of them are really strange, but i'm so tired of people ratting on him when he ends up being right 85% of the time. like he predicted patient 46 being gregory, yet people still act as though his gregbot theory is still way too insane to be true lol if fnaf has proven anything, it's that nothing is that insane to be off limits

I may not agree with a good amount of Mat's fnaf theories, but unfortunately, we've gotten to the point where Mat could predict the next game level by level and the fnaf community would still refuse to give him credit for that. It's... just an unfortunate effect of toxic fanbases, sadly. I remember back when Smash Ultimate was releasing, there was this one very well known leaker who, I kid you not, managed to get EVERY single one of his predictions RIGHT, even when other reputable leakers disagreed with his info. Unfortunately, the community just HATED him for some reason, including many well known game journalists too, and only hated more and more as he was proven right, and now, it seems the community has done their best to bury his existence, and whatever tiny bits of info they speak about him... is simple name-calling.. Now, I am in no way saying Matpat is a DasVergeben situation (mat is a theorist, NOT a leaker) but it just goes to show just how far these dark communities can go.

What pains me the most is that Security Breach basically nullified amazing ending that story already had in Pizzeria Simulator. Like, "Connection terminated" monologue is genuinely one of the best endings I had seen in a while and it got ruined. Somebody would argue it was going into this direction since Help Wanted, but I would argue that this point could become a great soft reboot for the story, like a new arc with new villain (Vanessa, wannabe Afton) without this whole "I always come back" bullshit. I mean, you can come back only for so long until it will become annoying rather than intriguing. What I wanted to say is - if SB started a new plotline without any Afton shenanigans, it's story wouldn't be half as bad. Freddybear deez nuts

@@killeranimatronic5448 but from the narrative perspective I personally think that it would, again, ruin the ending monologue and make story even more convoluted. The purpose of Pizzeria Simulator was to tie the loose ends and finish the story. Well, at least it looked like it when it came out. It would hurt the integrity of the FNAF if all of them just miraculously survived, in my opinion. While I agree, it would be the most logical way for the events to unravel in real life, don't get me wrong I'm not debating that, yet I would say that it would also unnecessarily prolong already really long story and overall would be much more boring than just the soft reboot

I think the screwing up of the story was what aggravated me the most about this game! Steel Wool had perfectly set up a sort of soft reboot of the franchise with the introduction of Vanny in Help Wanted and was laying the ground work for a new era of FNAF. Vanny was gonna be the next big villain in the franchise, she seemed like she would've been a really compelling character. I mean the idea of someone who's unwillingly possessed by Afton and forced to carry out a new string of murders just sounds so DOPE! It would've been cool to see her two sides battle each other, with one side trying to kill Gregory and one side trying to save him! All Steel Wool had to do was create a simple story of Vanny trying to kill a group of children trapped in the Pizza Plex and Gregory trying to help those kids. THATS IT! Maybe add a couple small mysteries around the Pizza Plex that could reference past games or set up future games but that was it! However, just like with everything else in this game, Steel Wool went WAAAAAAAYY too over the top and convoluted the literal hell out of the story to the point where you don't even understand what the base motivations are for the characters! It was so simple and they dropped the ball harder than Fredbear chomped on the crying kids frontal lobe. PS: I understand that Scott is responsible for this too but I feel like Steel Wool had to have had input in someway.

Seriously! I’m really struggling to take anything as canon in this game because it’s just a mess and feels like it has no connection besides the fact that there is a Freddy animatronic and a Chica animatronic. More just an occasional call back to some of the games themes.

I feel like this all can be blamed on pushing out game too soon, and steelwool being too small of a studio for such project. Because well, games have to be released eventually.

It's more on Steel Wool than Scott because Steel Wool didn't even finish the story Scott GAVE them. The balloon boy ending went nowhere. There was another classic FNAF storytelling element that went nowhere but I can't remember what. And Scott "publicly left" the project around the time Steel Wool decided to redo everything. They did such a good job on VR (to the point I still think it's possibly the best VR game made despite VR tech having improved the past few years) that Scott and they were overconfident in their ability to do a normal game. There's no end to the commentary because there's no end to the problems but it's just a tragedy
@boomboom6410
@boomboom6410 Жыл бұрын
@L You do realize that Scott was overseeing a good portion of development right? Scott could've told them to stop adding so much stuff to the game but he specifically stated in a post that he let them make the game more and more bloated. There is no way that Scott didn't play even a little of his own product before release so he definitely had a part in it's failure. It's his franchise, he still gets the final say!

I don't think the fan base didn't appreciate the horror. Why make scary versions of something already scary. People made silly interpretations of a scary thing. Now it's flipped because FNAF is silly so the fandom is making the scary. The fan base loves both sides. That was always the charm.

I think another contributor is the reason it became less scary in the first place. A lot of people earlier in the fandom were kids. Now most of those kids have grown up significantly and have different priorities in the new wave of the fandom. This was really cool to watch. Most of prior experience of Security Breach has been speed runners so seeing the game taken apart in terms of the actual stealth mechanics was really interesting. I also thought your argument surrounding the sentience of the animatronics the way the franchise has shifted over time was really well made. I don't really interact with the fandom much so I don't know how popular the opinion was, but I really like the idea of remnant. It's silly, but the world building side of my mind lights up with all the possibilities for computing systems that can gain functionality and personhood over time, and I think it also really nicely integrates elements like ghosts and grief into the world. A lot of stories want to just suture ghosts onto a world that is otherwise unchanged without really considering how the existence of ghosts over time would definitely be noticed and dug into, so seeing a bunch of scientists messing around hooking ghost-science up into their computers is satisfying to me on a level I didn't really expect from FNAF. Moreso than the original lore in fact (I'm going to be honest 'serial killer who targets kids' is a bit generic and didn't really give me any interest in who the purple guy was, without the connection to remnant, I don't actually care about Afton at all. Giving him a more individualised goal makes a lot more of a unique villain). That said, I'm going entirely from second hand accounts. I wouldn't be at all surprised if the books don't intergrate this as well as they could.

@@planetomars2571 I think it’s just because it’s a series and those voices are already established to a character. Imo the voice isn’t even different from FT Freddy (which duhh it’s the same person) but there’s no twist to it to make it seem like a different voice compared to Tara Strong who is the voice for both Raven from Teen Titans and Timmy Turner. So when you use the same voice for an entirely different character later in the series it just breaks immersion and continuity for me personally. It’s like if Tim Allen just voiced Lotso in Toy story 3 still using the Buzz Light year tones and inflections.

@inkanddreams4677
@inkanddreams4677 Жыл бұрын
He did. There isn’t any proof of him being one though. I think some people just thought that because William targeted children in his murders, that he was a pedo. Though, again, there is no proof of this and it’s a weak claim at best. Personally I prefer Wendigoon’s take on William’s motive, that he didn’t start killing kids until Evan(the crying child, he oldest son)died in the bit of 83. After that he became devastated by the death of his son and tried to find a way to bring him back(hence “I will put you back together”). He figures out about the possession thing, starts experimenting by using animatronics to kill kids and see if they get possessed as well and it works. The reason he targeted kids wasn’t because “he’s a pedo,” it’s because children are the ones who will go to see animatronics, which were what he used to kill people.

The problem with Ruin is that there isnt a way to make actual puzzles or anything resembling fnaf. The player can just move out the way and it shows when they try to do classic fnaf style in the burntrap ending. I wish the game took you to spots and would either be a locked perspective minigame or the moving around style. Well, either way the game wasn't ever gonna be all that great as it's very clearly had major rewrites in all aspects, makes me wish that we could've seen a fully thought out and realised vision for this game

My biggest issue with SB is the environment and story. The pizzaplex of course looks AMAZING but it’s not what I picture when I think of a scary environment. Or maybe have the pizzaplex how it is at the beginning but once the doors close, the lights automatically go out and it’s mostly dark. Now that would be something. I also don’t care to much for the animatronics having personalities. I don’t think it’s a bad idea, but I think they overdid it here like with the dialogue and everything. They seem, like, too sentient so it eliminates the horror of animatronics that are *just* animatronics, but they “seem alive” cause they’re lookin at me funny. I find it strange that FNAF ended up going the “horror for kids” route. When FNAF 1 came out, and Markiplier made his first video on it not too long after, I had just turned 9 Aug 4th. And I’ve stayed updated with FNAF ever since even though it gave me nightmares. And I know a lot of other people that were about my age at that time too. So I find it sort of ironic. I was willing to give post PS/UCN a chance once I saw the whole Vanny setup, but seeing the direction it’s taking now? Yeah, no. It was fun while it lasted.
@glockhall59
@glockhall59 Жыл бұрын
Part of the fun with classic fnaf was kind of making up your own personas for the characters in your head I think, and the fandom sharing those interpretations. Giving them straight up personalities not only ruins the horror, but a large part of the charm classic fnaf had I feel.

Y'know as someone who has been into FNaF since basically the first time Markiplier ever played it... I think you hit the nail in the head when it comes to how unbothered I was by the animatronics being basically people. It's cause I already saw them as people The fandom very much gave them individual personalities and attitudes to the point having animatronics with ACTUAL personalities was completely natural and there was no problem with it. FNaF Security Breach really does has that made by a fandom perspective feel,cause even if it wasn't perfect it exploded and some of us stayed to enjoy the mayhem it was Tho it's also true really nobody takes William Afton seriously anymore,he's no longer the child murderer who caused torment. He's peepaw Afton who refuses to just kick the bucket already and just let Vanny take over the antagonist role. Which is honestly sad ngl

That number one thing that pieces me off about security breach is that it doesn't have a narrative. It has no story. It's filled with shit lore that's tossed to the side with the main focus being upgrading Freddy. With how the old trailers portrayed vanny and afton, I was hoping that security breach will take a more classical route in story telling but for some reason settled on telling the actual story through bullshit disc's and messages. I believe that it was originally going to be the case as the first trailers depicted that but for some reason it shifted when the second batch of trailers rolled around. Kinda feels like that steel wool ripped that element right out either cause they ran out of time or they just couldn't fit it in so they just came up with the bullshit we have now.

The point at the end about samey-gameplay is a pretty good point and has both its pros and cons. Jrs is a great example of how a FNaF game can be similar to the classics while offering a new spin on things to make it different while there are FNaF fangames that try to be similar but end up being completely awful like Dormitabis. On the opposite side of the spectrum you have things like The Joy of Creation that make a change to free roam gameplay feel really good and challenging while being pretty scary (story mode especially) but then there are several that fail to reach that level and end up feeling awful. Security Breach really felt like it was trying to be something amazing, and it probably would’ve been if it wasn’t for scope creep and over ambition. Now with what we’re seeing from Ruin, plus with them hopefully learning their lesson after SB, Steel Wool has me quite interested in this new experience with maybe a more satisfying ending than any of the current SB endings (nothing will ever beat that fantastic Henry speech tho)
