Seems to me with that horizontal clamping pressure at the bit you would get a bit of a lift off the cast iron table top. The face of the clamp is canted but? On my Felder FD250 I have to apply clamping on two faces to avoid walking of the wood.

Jeffrey Lonigro - we used to use a baby sedgewick just like this in our shop, and it had no issues morticing hardwood. If you can chisel the wood and drill the wood then you can mortice the wood too. I suppose if you haven't used one you won't understand but the massive auger drill bit inside the square chisel does all the work and the four corners of the chisel finishes the edge. You have a massive meter long handle to use your entire body weight to lever the chisel in so yeah, hardwood like maple is no problem. I've morticed most woods, and the machine works best with denser elms, oaks and other hardwood. We have a bigger wadkin machine these days but I wish we still had the sedgewick too as the wadkin is a bit brutal on me shoulders I find.

The FD250 Felder mortise machine is a different animal due to the gearing leverage on the plunge and multiple speeds along with a precise step and repeat system with custom increments available. The FD250 is a horizontal layout. I chose the Felder FD250 also because it can be changed from square chisel to a slot bore bit that comes into play with furniture and other milling projects. With the auger set a few thousands loose in the square bit tip one can have a very clean floor to the mortise and this gives additional contact strength to adhesive in the mortise. I find the precision amazing with the only adjustment being tenon size off of the shaper for a good joint fit. The Felder is more money but the quick action and performance in hardwoods gives a competitive edge in furniture and milling.

@@vincentrolfe1384 so if I loosen off the auger in our machines, are you saying I'll get a cleaner floor to my mortice? I use an expanding glue and cut my tenons a tiny bit shorter to get round my messy whorls at the bottom of the mortice at the moment.... I'll give it a go ;)

With an expanding adhesive or not; I approach the position of the auger up in the square chisel sloping shoulder that nests against the square chisel slope as being a couple thousands of an inch away from each other. The auger being as close as possible up in the chisel cavity yet not touching metal to metal. The further one has these two elements of the slope away from each other, the more webbing at the floor we experience, and, thus the floor is like those dripping we find in caves. Can't have dripping in our floors and have a flat floor. I see your auger lowered in the chisel rather far in :47. The only hand chisel I need with these setting is at the ends of a slot. With a cleanup pass off center from the first run all I sees is bulls eyes with very little webbing. Take a look at some of my vids of hollow chisel. The first vid I made had the auger too close to the chisel (metal to metal) and the noise had the neighbor's dogs chasing me in the back yard. they did. Have fun oopart

@@vincentrolfe1384 hahahah. Yeah tell me about it, we had that same screeeeeech till we adjusted the two metal parts a thou or so apart. We mostly use a 1inch chisel,and usually on quercus robur, which is pretty tough.
