it was from this video that I rented in the same building as apt #3. I saw it Aug 2021 and knew it was where I would set up base. I booked for 30 days and I stayed 4 months before finding a long term apartment. It was perfect for arriving, resting, and getting your bearings. The beds are hard. if you need a soft bed, you might need a topper. The half fridge and the shower booth were my pet peeves. The wifi was fast enough for long zoom meetings. The staff are friendly and responsive. Yes, it takes a day or two but they will respond. The bldg is safe. There is street noise, of course. but you are located in an area of town you are most likely to walk around 3-4 days a week! The other 2 bldgs will require you to walk 20-30 min, learn the bus system, and they dont have an elevator. But they might feel more residential than Bldg #3. Overall, it's a great choice to start your relocation to PT without a car. Bolt/Uber is very accessible and across the street from Bldg #3 is a grocery store and a major bus stop where you have 20+ busses to choose from. There's a bakery at the street level so you have fresh bread just steps away. A few times a year the students are really noisy at night but its a downtown location so that's to be expected. Walking in the Baixa (downtown) is nice and flat which is very hard to find in Coimbra.

I understand that those are recently renovated, but for coimbra those prices are extremly high. Lived in coimbra for almosymt 10 years and i had a 30 y old T2 with living room and kitchen and 2 balconies for less than 500€. 20-30 min walking from ckty center (up and down hills pf course), but very well served from public tranportation from 7 am to 11 pm, and lots to do and excelent infrastrucute, as well as parks.( vale das flores area). You should check that area.

@@patricksweeney5308 likely they went up, but if you stay away from the "baixa" aka downtown, praça da República and close to the main area of the university you will feel like you will be paying a fair price for the area and flat. Those recently renewd flats with ikea stuff are very well inflated. Please bear in mind that coimbra is still a small city so with +/- 1 hour walking you have cross the city from one end to another. This places ill be mentioning are within this radius. Vale das flores, alto de sao joao, casal da eira and tovim. Areas nearby crawling in the direction of the city center are also good. For sure with the prices they are asking for those studios you will be very well served. Also, try to find a local to help you with the speaking, ive got the strong feeling they are starting to increase prices for foreigners

@@joaoroque5333 viva! I agree, people can find cheaper places. However, don’t forget that rentals in Coimbra can get a bit crazy with students. I still remember the stories of people renting rooms that had no conditions whatsoever, and on the other end of the spectrum, parents buying apartments for their kids to stay in the city while they are studying. What I am trying to say is that Coimbra is full of extremes in the housing market, and some companies are taking advantage of it because there are people willing pay. AirBnBs haven’t helped either. At Estádio/Alma Shopping, studio rentals can go up to 500 euros.

The third apartment seems to be dark because there are no windows! Is it still a T1 if the windows are in the bedroom but none are in the living room? And no oven is fine for the short term but not permanently. Also, when you say “air con” is that heat as well as cold air?

Sorry but there is no way you will get a 20€ electricity bill. If you're running AC, washer/drier etc, you will be looking at 50 to 75€, maybe more in the winter. Also these places are being bought by real estate funds and turned into studio apartments to rent to students. 480 to 600€ may seem cheap but here minimum wage is close to 600€ so it is pretty sick really.
@ExpatsEverywhere

It's because they're solar powered. These are quotes from the property managers. They said average low bill is €20 in the solar powered building and €50-60 in the winter otherwise.

There are induction cookers, and a fridge. We're in one of the units and it works fine. The fridge is small meaning you need to go to the grocery store twice a week, but yes, there is no oven. From what I can tell from those locations the only noise you will hear is from traffic, just like in most cities. @@ExpatsEverywhere yes! The other street, even if it is like 500 meters away from some bars and restaurants in downtown, you will hardly notice it because almost no one circulates through that street at night, except for some light car traffic, and sounds are muffled by other buildings (though I have to say I find it to be an ugly street). If you were more in the middle of the historical center or really right next door to the University, then that could be noisy because of the bars.

@@ppietrap3876 That's good to know. I currently live 2 miles (roughly 3.5 km) from a medium-sized outdoor concert stadium. And while I can't hear anything in my home; if I step outside my front door, I do. So I'd expect the same for Coimbra's stadium, in which you really need to stay 4 km away from it to be able to sleep at night.

Thanks for the info! I would rarely consider a T0, but #2 was actually my fav of the 3. However none would really work for us as we really need at least a small yard for our 2 dogs. If there are problems with units or connections they've found solutions for people from ethernet cords to hotspots for people when it goes down. We found them on AirBnb and there were some details on pricing. Any of the units from what we know can be nightly, weekly, monthly, or annually rentals (the T1s in Combatentes 125A might not be annually because they're desirable tourist units). We don't have a business relationship with them. They allowed us to film their units for an episode for you all so we did it. You'll have to contact them. We know they're a small management group. - Josh & Kalie

Thanks, Greg. To be honest, it's very difficult to find companies that want to show us properties. We found Radical, asked them, and they had a few available to show. The 1st apartment was going to be occupied later that day so we were fortunate to get in there. If you noticed how we did the title and thumbnail, we're not saying that it's the cheapest or best or nicest, we're just saying these are examples of what's out there for T0 and T1. - Josh & Kalie

Try to live here in Florida, for a 1 bedroom townhouse is 2,300.00 a month. Is wayyyyy cheaper to live over there. But I love Florida ❤ I lived here my hole life 😊

For sure they were less during covid. A lot of places took a hit and the market was down. There are plenty of Portuguese university students stay in this housing. It's Radicals main demographic. That and tourists. - Josh & Kalie

@@ExpatsEverywhere Even a year before Covid apartments were affordable for locals, not now . Students pile into one bedrooms now just to get by. Airbnb’s have really changed the demographics. Portugal needs to do what San Francisco has had in effect for decades…..rent control… and Airbnb rules that a tenant can stay for only 30 days. It works

And what do the codes mean on the Radical website? For example LOW PR 1B. I'm assuming it's apt. 1B and what does LOW PR mean?

Hi LOW PR just seems to be a auto translation from the Portuguese name that Radical gave to the building. "LOW" = BAIXA, which is a name given to a downtown area in the city.

@@patricksweeney5308 That's true. I really enjoy Figueira so far and it's only a short ride away from Coimbra so I don't have any reason to move. The only reason why I would move to Coimbra is if I worked there. Otherwise any seaside town in central Portugal is nicer and cheaper. Thanks for the idea of paying rent up front. I'll do that when I'm looking for the next apartment. My small piece of advice to you would be to look into cryptocurrencies. Portugal has zero tax on capital gains on cryptocurrencies and that was one of the main reasons why I chose to move to Portugal.

We didn't say they were the cheapest or best or nicest. This company showed us properties told us their rates and we filmed them. There's no kickback or games here. They have 50+ units available and they only had a couple to show us so they did and we glad accepted the invitation to film because trying to get realty companies to show properties is very difficult. Apartment 1 we filmed in the morning because someone was set to check-in in the afternoon. - Josh & Kalie
