My father was a radio operator in a B-17 and PBY reconnaissance planes. When he was out on patrol he would listen to music from Hawaii from the left ear and the Military Channel with the right! His Morse code reading was automatic, he'd have to look at what he wrote to get the message!

@@LOLLYPOPPE because a code replaces an entire word, sentence or phrase. This is technically a cipher where you replace single letter with dots and dashes but usually, ciphers offer confidentiality. Pretty similar to how encrypting and decrypting is viewed. Morse code isn’t a code, it’s technically a cipher. There is a lot of discussion in cryptology and cryptography about this topic. The general gist is that you first “decipher” or “decrypt” the incoming dots and dashes into letters and afterwards decode into full sentences or words since the messages are coded. For example S O S is code for Save Our Souls But “encrypting” it would be … _ _ _ … The reason why it’s technically “encrypting” or “ciphering” is because you are replacing each letter with dots and dashes. Why it’s technically not “encrypting” or “ciphering” is because there is no algorithm nor any mathematical involvement. Also the guy was clearly joking around.

When they do it the difference between a dit(.) and a dah(-) is still the same, no matter the speed. A dah is three times the length of a dit. Secondly, they are simply more advanced and have learned to pick up on the brief intervals. (A space for a word is three times the space for a letter.)

Fun fact: In the Walkie Talkie of Before There was a MORSE CODE function. (Also in toy ones) With them you could communicate through Morse Code, but when time passed. They removed the button

1980, a cold morning in NYC, I went to FCC office for my ham radio general class morse code test, which 13 words per minute. I was the only oriental guy in thin cloth, kungfu shoe. about 35 person in the room, after fcc examiner sent out morse code & we copied & answer multiple choice questions.. I copied & answered all questions. surprised, most people said can not hear good. so the fcc guy said, will try again, if anyone had no problems & walked out.. I walked out with other 2 guys... outside FCC guy said ...all 3 guys passed.. my first call sign ka2kx? N5eH? now AB4r? hehe
