01:15 "...in the early stages I'm thinking about aspects of the subject that I can't see as much as the things that I can see." might just be the most important piece of advice about drawing and painting you hear, maybe ever! The mistakes we make in our art, and the passages that look wrong, but we're not sure why, often have to do with assumptions we make about how things look, when instead we should be investigating real appearance and structure!

Always a bloody delight watching the way he freely and almost carelessly lays in the first layers to cover the white paper, and then gradually works with the pigments to tighten and bring out the image.

I love the idea of diving into a flower which becomes a universe in itself. It reminds me of the beginning of William Blake's poem Auguries of Innocence, and also Georgia O'Keefe's wonderful flower paintings. Your dahlia is stunning and your thoughts on perception and vision are so interesting. Thank you! ❤

WOW, that is SO beautiful. Awesome! I wish I could hang around with you, with another artist and just paint! I know what you mean about having to stay away from the details while you're just starting the picture, otherwise it get intimidating. I love how you used the grey for the shadow. I'm going to make more use of the colour in my artistic endeavours as well. It looks so good how you did it. It's just so beautiful, your painting!

@tthomas184 I usually do watercolor. So, I prefer glass. I like to keep the matte finish. Unless I go nuts with the paint and leave shiny spots, which happens a lot.

Thank you for your videos, I’ve learned so much from you. I purchased casein after watching one of your videos but it has such a foul odor, I find it difficult to use,is this normal?
@JamesGurney
@JamesGurney Жыл бұрын
Yes, casein has a unique smell and it's normal. Some describe the aroma as medical or like a cleaning agent. The manufacturers tell me it comes from an ingredient that keeps the milk ingredients from spoiling (which would be a worse smell). I'm used to the smell and kind of like it, but I understand if it's not your cup of tea. All I can suggest is to paint outside on windy days?
@amypak
@amypak Жыл бұрын
I see you worked on a board for this, but at other times you’ve used casein in watercolor sketchbooks. I’ve been hunting to determine paper weight that will work with casein in a sketchbook, but have found no information except “use a rigid surface”… can you please tell me what you suggest James? I’ve got casein paints on the way but am hesitant to order a sketchbook yet (or make my own if I need heavier paper, such as 300#)

Hey James, I need some advice. I went to study art a liberal arts college in 2018. While there I had a strong feeling in my gut that I wasn’t really being taught what I needed to be taught. I’ve been working in a factory for years now, trying to save up money to attend an Atelier to actually learn how to paint and draw. But it’s financially out of reach for me. I feel like my hopes are dashed. I am wondering if you’ve had any experience with bad teaching at schools. Honestly sometimes I feel like I was pranked. We spent far too much time navel gazing and taking about post-modern ideas of everything being art, the death of the author, etc. I wanted to paint like the masters. I did not get that, and I’ve felt completely lost for years. It really does feel like if you don’t have the privilege of living on either the East or west coasts then you’re out of luck for a classical arts education. I just don’t know what to do with my life anymore. I have become the classic Fox News stereotype of the man with an art degree, that is to say a failure. I’m 28 years old, I don’t know what to do. I feel like I have been wandering in the wilderness for years now.
