I'm so eager to try this in Fall. Great germination!

definitely was worth doing... I am seeing the mother plants up now, really neat when they come up..

These were placed under the lights right away. They are still under the lights but they are still so tiny I wasn't sure if the humidity dome should be left on. I lowered the lights right down to the top of the trays when I removed the dome. I appreciate your help on these and love your videos. They help quite a bit for someone just starting out. Thanks.

Thanks for the information I just collected the seeds from a 11 year old plant. The plant I collected from the woods on my property and brought to my house and planted it in my garden. Now the plant gets about knee high or higher every year, reproduces new plants in the garden every year.

Darn right, you should be proud! That's how I felt when I got Hosta to grow from seed. My JIP's grow wild in the woods so I'm going to give this a try next year, Thanks for showing us the method Diane,

Congratulations Diane. I wonder how many years before they bloom from seed. I'm growing Lilium canadense from seed and it takes 5 to 6 years to bloom. This will be it's 4th summer so far it has only been a few inches tall and the mature plant is several feet tall. Interesting thing about Lilium canadense is it moves sideways every year so you have to try to keep up with it.

Wow, that was great! Can't wait to try this qith mine! Have a nice summer!

I missed last fall. Will gather this year. Looks like there will be lots of bright red spikes. Have you ever done "doll's eyes"?
@GardenGuy196713 жыл бұрын
OK thanks for your advice I appreciate it. I will give that a try and see how moist they stay. I also have a fan running to keep the air moving so I may need to check them again later in the evening to be safe. My fan and lights turn off at midnight so they should be OK during the nights. If you can think of anything else that might help I can use all the advise you can give. This is only my second year trying seeding.

@GardenGuy1967 never leave them unattended for too long, I mean I have lost a many of seedlings this way.. watering is by far the hardest step in growing.. good luck! learn as you grow I still am after 13 + yrs

@GardenGuy1967 if you go to work for several hours the dome lid may be to your advantage.. if you are watering from the bottom and water well before you leave you may be ok.. it is hard for me to know your conditions and such..
@dianemummvideos13 жыл бұрын
@GardenGuy1967 well I usually would of put them under the lights without heat already , but if they are not getting too leggy for you wait it out.. many times they will germinate under the lights, without heat.. and these two like light for germination..
@GardenGuy196713 жыл бұрын
Nice job Diane. It's amazing what some seeds can do. I have a question about some of my seedlings. I would say 75 percent have their 1st set of leaves so I removed the humidity dome but left them on the heat mat. when should I remove them from the heat mat and will the rest germinate without the heat? They are Petunia and Impatiens.
@dianemummvideos13 жыл бұрын
@GardenGuy1967 if you around to water them I would take the dome off , can initially cause problems later down the road, they need air circulation , this will be best for them..if they are looking good and doing well stay with what you are doing.. impatiens I never get all to germinate neither the petunias.. can be tricky .. I would think those others would of came up by now if the others are getting their 1st set of leaves already, I mean they should of.. some however can be slow to germ too..

I can water in the morning and then again in the late afternoon would that be sufficient? The ones that have come up so far look very good. I am new to KZbin as well as gardening but if I can figure out how to send you a picture of them I will.

Just wondering if they are blooming yet? I have some started. Did you put them in the ground the first year in the spring? Fun experiment! Nice video
@dianemummvideos7 жыл бұрын
I believe it takes a few years, make sure and keep them somewhat moist if you plant them out ..I would plant them out as soon as you feel they are big enough .. mine were in too dry of a soil and they did not survive it.. good luck.. Diane

do you have to stratify them or sand them? i'm thinking i could winter sow them in milk jugs outside but its kind of warm now in 40's. what did you grow them in - sand or peat moss or soil and perlite/

I have some of the red berries now, and want to try both methods. Going to plant some outside right away, and also want to stratify some. What was the mixture you stored the seeds in, in the baggie, and then also, what did you plant them in, in the tray? thx
@dianemummvideos7 жыл бұрын
I believe it was just a peat and perlite mix..I just planted them in a black 1020 tray that you use for growing..

What is the reason for removing the red pulp? I am thinking that in nature, the red pulp would stay on as the seeds dropped. I want to direct sow the seeds I collected. I am no good at starting seeds ahead.
@dianemummvideos7 жыл бұрын
This process is mainly for starting indoors, I think if you let nature do it the red pulp would eventually deteriorate .. so probably not the same technique as when letting them drop and grow naturally ..
@dianemummvideos13 жыл бұрын

Congratulations. I love free plants. I have hostas that seed themselves every year and I end up giving away tons of them to friends and neighbors. Maybe I should start a business. :o)
@dianemummvideos13 жыл бұрын
@dalecalder2003 this interesting, Seedlings need three or more years of growth before they become large enough to flower. In addition the plant is not self pollinating since the male flowers on a specific plant have already matured and died before the female flowers of that same plant are mature. So the female flowers need to be pollinated by the male flowers of a different plant. This inhibits inbreeding and contributes to the health of the species.
