What I have always wondered about buddhism is, how they combine such contrary concepts as "no self" and "rebirth" into one philosophical system and still claim congruency. In my view these two concepts exclude each other. What I mean is, if there is no self, what is it that is reborn? Of if there is re-birth, what is it that has already existed at least once before?
@icovarrubias
@icovarrubias 3 жыл бұрын
As far as I understand it, what carries on to the next life is a very subtle aspect of mind (there is a coarse, a subtle and a very subtle mind), one could think it's not "you" in general that is reborn but a very specific part of your mental continuum. This explains why someone doesn't just readily remembers past lifes. As for the no self part, this points to interdependence of all phenomena (including self) and the absence of inherent existence. We could say that there is a part of what you think as yourself that is being reborn but is in itself dependently arisen therefore without essence.

this moment cant perpetuate itself into the next. similarly the final moment of this life functions to cause the first moment of the next.
@edzardpiltz6348
@edzardpiltz6348 3 жыл бұрын
@@5piles thanks for your answer. Let me see if I understand you right. What you purpose it's a moment to moment as opposed to a lifetime to lifetime kind of rebirth. Is that correct? An other takeaway for me would be is, that all that gets reborn is just the moment itself, but no person or self or any kind of entity as a center of experience? Is that what you are saying?
@5piles
@5piles 3 жыл бұрын
@@edzardpiltz6348 if you declare your nonexistence and perceive it it is yourself that apprehends this. this person lacks the ability to endure into the next moment through its own power, and is therefore empty of an abiding self. such a person at the time of death with that final moment of mind terminating through having functioned produces the effect of the first moment of mind in what you'll call your life

Thank for your sharing this. I have been contemplating Buddhism from afar for 25 years. Can you help me understand its position- What exists ultimately, nothing? No God, no Self, No Absolute Reality so what then exists?
@cassieA4
@cassieA4 3 жыл бұрын
The Buddha doesnt take a stand on this as it leads to more views. Existence is dependent on causes and conditions. Once the causes are undone existence ceaes to be. Try studying dependent origination. Which shows the chain like causes that condtions existence. There is no ultimate being as such, just mere processes working in rapidity that create a sense of self . You have to get into insight meditation proper to start unravelling these questions for yourself.

White Willow, that would be nihilism. The nature of reality is *Shunyatha, Emptiness* : neither exists nor non existence. That's the inconceivable *Middle Way.*

@@cassieA4 Since phenomeno are causal one to another - interdependent, there are no phenomeno permanent, inherently substancial, independent, and at such, this means there aren't phenomeno arising a ceasing. Arising and passing away is just an apparence. This not coming from the Pali teachings, but from Prajñaparamita.

Thank you for this talk, I really got a lot from it. One question. At around 20:16 you say a pali term for the subtle "perception" of self that persists after stream entry. I am afraid I could not pick the word you used, could you let me know what it is? There is a lot I would love to discuss about the experience but this is not really the forum for that. Once again, thank you for your channel.
