You can do the same with just a powermeter and preferably a wheel speed sensor. It’s called the Chung’s method. It does not take wind into account and and you need to estimate air density yourself using air temperature and pressure from, e.g, a weather service. Silca made a video about it called ”Aero testing expert explains how to get accurate aero testing at home”. I think that device just mesures the wind, air temperature and pressure and then applies similar calculations.

I've done the chung method in golden cheetah for years. It has so many flaws that people don't talk about. Go do laps of a park or something for an hour... then go check the recorded altitude when you start vs when you finish. It will change. Thats with a Garmin 1040, which should be pretty accurate. This variation of altitude effects the results so much. The GiBLI isn't perfect, but more data = more accuracy imho. (but also bearing in mind poop in = poop out.)
@viljamip6 ай бұрын
@@ChinaCycling yes I fully agree with you. I think that the Chung's method needs very careful test methods and setup to be accurate. Having this kind of sensor likely makes it a lot easier to conduct tests in the real world.
@galenkehler6 ай бұрын
There's no way an estimate can even approach the accuracy of this technology. I won't debate that the cost is lower, but that not really what we're thinking about here. This is really a performance item at another level. You could go out without any tech and just ride around for free and see what's faster if you aren't really serious.

@viljamip the Chung Method is a total pain...it works if it's your only option but this is very easy very anyone

@@ChinaCyclingguessing that's why you could use the Chung method in the Catesby tunnel is Northampton then? Constant air pressure and density, with a constant altitude and a very accurately known distance.

CdA is not the coefficient of aerodynamic drag. Is the drag coefficient (Cd) times frontal area (A).

The pitot is flat, the app even has a "spirit level" function that tells you the angle.
@moses54076 ай бұрын
There's no way a pitot tibe mounted in front of the rider can estimate much less measure aero frontal and multiangle resistance or laminar flow disturbance of the rider and bike BEHIND the sensor ... until proven otherwise. I contacted the company to see how they did this and got the answer that the sensor system doesn't in fact "know" or estimate these factors. so, basically, it's a verry pricey airspeed sensor being advertised as a portable windtunnel. prove it. No physics ...no buy in. This is an overpriced, overpromising airspeed sensor ... full stop.
@ChinaCycling6 ай бұрын
I have no vested interest to defend it... but, my $0.02: It knows your power, it knows your speed, it knows the road gradient, it knows the air density, it takes Crr as a constant, it knows what the wind is doing... so it can work out your aero drag. If the same power, same wind, etc... but suddenly the rider gets slower; it must be an increase in aero drag.
@moses54076 ай бұрын
with a power meter and computer I know my power and speed. With an elevation profile of the route (free) I know the grade and, in fact, would have a power profile of the ride for my planned pace (also free). Any deviation from that power/speed profile would be mechanical or wind. The ONLY solutions would be to check tire pressure or improve my tuck. Right? Free. no 1200 CAD pitot tube

Chung's method is better this is rubbish
@ChinaCycling6 ай бұрын
I've used the Chung method before. It's fine, but it has it's limits. I was using a Garmin Edge 1040 (pretty respectable head unit) and doing laps of a loop... however, the Garmin was recording each lap as getting slightly lower and lower in altitude (I'm guessing air pressure was rising or something, confusing the barometer.) therefore Golden Cheetah thinks you're actually riding down a false flat, messing with the results. Wouldn't happen with the GiBLI as it has it's own environmental sensors.
