A few years ago I grew potatoes from potato seeds I harvested from some potato berries that matured on the vine. The seeds grew extremely vigorously and when I transplanted them out, the roots were like little steel wire they were so strong. Pretty cool. They grew and multiplied but only made small bite size potatoes. A few of the plants made crazy amounts of tubers, so I saves those and planted those out again the next year to see if I could get berries from them again, but they didn't set any. I thought I dug them all up, but this year a few potato shoots are up from some missed ones! So I get an extra chance at trying to set berries again. :)

When you harvest any kind of potatoes, do not wash them unless you are gonna use them right away. Instead, let them dry with the dirt on them and store in a cool dark place. They will last a lot longer that way.

sir, now that all kinds of seeds are featured, how a bout a video about encouraging bolting, pollinating, and How to encourage growing seeds. because i'm still confused about how to grow seeds and flowers, and i believe some other viewers too. thank you, great videos you make!
@Selfsufficientme

What can work sometimes to encourage going to seed is less watering to stress the plant (but not kill it). Or, increasing the temp such as a mini greenhouse or hoop house over the crop. All the best :)

Self Sufficient Me thank you very much for your kindness answering my question but one more question sir, if it's inside a greenhouse, won't the bees and butterflies be unable to enter and pollinate the flowers? and without pollination won't there be any seeds? sorry for asking such basic questions, but i am a sucker at planting ( ^﹏^*)

I repotted my chocolate mint last week. I knew mint spreads easily, but I was surprised to find a leafy, rooted runner under the soil. I removed it and stuck it in another pot to grow! Not a food crop, but aloe vera grows from pups super easy.

That choc mint is an excellent variety! We grew it down south when we lived in Victoria but it's a little harder to grow here in the subtropics - tastes just like an after dinner mint :)

For the yacón, you replant the rhizome but not the tuber. The rhizome is propagated similar to ginger. I'm not sure if you knew this, but just thought it might be helpful.

Plant the gnarly bit above the tubers. You can cut it in pieces. I was impatient and put the pieces in pots after a very late harvest (end of December). I now have 14 plants. I already gave one away.

After your banana tree produces pups and bananas and you are ready to cut down the tree, cut it down, peel the tree trunk and you will have a lovely edible surprise inside the trunk of the banana tree. There are several layers to peel off, they do peel off easily and you can save the peelings to dry and use as fire starters. You can also make cloth but I haven't learned how to do that yet. Some people eat the big banana bud but for us that's a bit tricky. I don't advise that unless you really really know what you are doing. Those buds can be really bad. There are recipes on youtube for the center core that's the edible part of the banana tree you peeled out and it's easy and good.

Banana trees can be kept in a bucket of water for a couple of months in warm climates. The will even sprout new trees. And after can be planted. They are very hardy bare root trees.

if you're in a short season area and your potatoes are sprouting too early you can store them in a bushel basket and cover it with some newspaper. store it in a cool dark place and they'll just sit there and grow sprouts for months. I've planted potatoes with shoots over a foot long, they grow great.

Some really good things. Though with pineapple, I prefer to grow from the seeds. Plants from seed instead of fruit tops, will usually produce larger and sweeter fruits, then take pups from the mother plant after fruiting to propagate

4 out of 5 stars on the 4th of 5 in this series. Our grocery stores are getting pineapples that have their tops sprayed with what looks to be a defoliant so mostly around here they will not regrow. Perhaps I need to find a less commercial and more organic source. Our farmers market ginger and turmeric, we planted maybe 6 weeks ago, have begun sprouting and seem to be healthy in the summer heat. IS there any sense to bananas in what I've previously heard about Son, Father, Grandfather growing? Where you allow each banana plant to have 2 pups (plant + 2 pups) and allow to grow with whats essentially 3 plants whereas one plant is always coming into fruiting maturity and one plant is being cut back with another waiting for its chance???
@Selfsufficientme
@Selfsufficientme 6 жыл бұрын
Yes I think there is merit in the 3 banana plant theory because 3 is manageable for appropriate nutrients and water but still makes good use of space whereas the big clumping method I use can be tricky and lead to poor fruiting if you're not careful but I still like big clumps... If I had another acre I might have spread them out. Cheers :)

My_Vizsla we don't have all that cold of a winter, I'm in zone 8b, but it's cold enough that semi tropical plants don't overwinter. I know there are some varieties of banana that can handle cold, but I don't think in cold climates they produce fruit.
