My tried and true fermenting method for saving clean seeds from any fruit that contains its seeds in a gelatinous internal membrane.
Woo! That's a mouthful.
Basically all you need is a cup + water + fruit (veg) to save from + time. But if you want to hear me rattle on about the details, then you're in the right place. :P

I was taught to follow fermentation and rinsing with a five minute Ajax rub with the seeds in a sieve, then rinse. This is then followed by washing with a drop of dish detergent and a final rinse. Dried seeds come out super clean, sanitized, and fluffy with the characteristic hairy seed surface of commercial seeds. Very informative video, as always.

Thanks! Idk about using detergents as I imagine that might impact the integrity of the seed coating long term, but do what works for you!

@@VeronicaFlores Howdy, what I was taught is that the Ajax or similar, scrubs and disinfects the seed coat, and the drop of detergent serves only to float away the pumice and rinse clean. Well dried and stored, seeds last years. Really enjoy your videos and keep up the great work! Curious, what zone are you in?

Very nice tips Veronica. Nice thing about saving tomato seeds is that when they are stored in a cool and dry place they can be planted several years later with germination rates still quite good after 5 years or so. I have had tomato seeds germinate that were 30 years old. So if you over save do not throw them out. Have a great day.

Great video. Welcome back. I’ve missed your videos. I regularly save tomato seeds using the same method. It really works great. The fermentation process also reduces diseases that could reside on the seed. New gardeners should realize that saving seeds works best for open pollinated varieties. With hybrids you might get some disappointing offspring. By the way, inspired by one of your earlier videos I took some pepper plants into my green. I’m excited to see the results

My grandmother used to take them out on a blank sheet of paper an let them dry for 24-48 hours - I learned this from her and have been using it ever since. The goo will dry out. They are sticking to the paper a bit but still are very easy to separate. (if there is a bit of paper on them, no big deal) Now i am thinking to try your method using underwater squishing of the tomato and than air drying on a paper. Good inspiration!

someone posted a video where they used whole tomato slices placed on soil, then covered with dirt. The seed coating most likely fermented. about (10?) days later, there were tons of sprouts. But here in the North West we won't be saving tomatoes to plant. They will be anything but fresh. So I tried drying some. I guess it will work. However, I did the seeds in a bit of water trick like you said. In about 4 days, the seeds cleaned right up. I dried them on a ceramic plate close to the furnace. I'm gonna try the coffee filter trick next. Or maybe use an old cutting board. Point is... it works. Thanks for posting.

Would you consider putting up some planning tips? maybe a sort of calendar of what you do over the winter to plan for spring/getting seedlings going? As we go through winter, we're all plotting on what to do when. I think lots would love to know what you plan to do in the coming months in terms of prep. :) gist is.. yeah, every year I inevitably learn stuff after I need to have started doing it so I have to push that off to next year (if I can remember!). at least beekeeping taught me to gather equipment early ;)

@VeronicaFlores
@VeronicaFlores 6 жыл бұрын
Sounds like you're growing in pots? I worry less about fungi and disease from compost, and more about lack of nutrients in the remaining soil at the end of the season, which can lead to fungi and disease susceptibility. You *could* try layering it all in a pile or bin with holes at the end of the season with food scraps, yard waste, and worms to "recondition" it (I don't have data on whether this works, but it does in my head lol.)

Hello Veronica. I have a serious question. How to grow tomatoes indoors during winter months ?Thank you
@VeronicaFlores
@VeronicaFlores 6 жыл бұрын
Don't? Lol. You know I tend to not give it a shot, simply because the temperatures indoors where I'm currently at aren't all that different from the temps outdoors (though I do keep a couple varieties in the greenhouse, but they stay pretty small and are mostly for scent and experimentation.) I am looking at doing a four seasons greenhouse in the near future that will support tomatoes further into the winter months. For now, your best bet might be doing some research into what determinate varieties do well in pots, then go from there. :)

Do you have any tips on how to prevent Tomato Blight? I have grown tomatoes for about 10 years with no problem - then the last 2 years I get blight in mid season. I have noticed it appears soon after a cold spell in the warm season. Is it just the cold killing the plants and turning the tomatoes black? Thanks for your fantastic videos.
@VeronicaFlores
@VeronicaFlores 6 жыл бұрын
Are you certain it is blight? Frost damage tends to have a black/blue/purple tint, and evenly layers out from the most exposed/highest/furthest out leaves. I don't usually see it until we get down below 35F. Blight tends to have a grey/brown tint, and is splotchy. If it's true blight, I'd prune away any foliage that touches the soil as well as all the diseased bits (sterilize your pruners/knife before and after) and amend the soil around your plant with compost, then top with mulch if you have any on hand.
@healergeorge

@VeronicaFlores
@VeronicaFlores 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you! And not too weird- I know how hard it is to find a hair care regimen that works. 🙂 I use Living Proof PhD Shampoo, then Living Proof Restore mask while I'm scrubbing everything else, followed by PhD Conditioner and PhD 5-in-1 styling cream. I rinse and wring most of the water out in the shower after shampoo/mask, then put a nickel to quarter sized blob of the conditioner on my ends and work it upward and leave it, then add the styling cream on top the same way (maybe a little less) once I get out of the shower but while my hair is still pretty wet (slightly dripping) so the products go on evenly and don't weigh my hair down too much. Then I just finger comb any knots, let my part fall where it wants to, and try really hard not to touch my hair until it's dry, then flip my head upside down and shake it all out to tousle it a bit. It's not the cheapest regimen to copy, but a little goes a long way and it saves me hours a week since I don't need to bother with heat styling anymore. I also find that I need to wash my hair less often - maybe every 2-3 days unless I've gotten a ton of dirt in it working outside. I don't color (I've found I have better texture without it) and I've been cutting it myself for years now, as most stylists don't know how to properly lop curls to fall well, so shampoo etc is honestly one of my only "beauty" expenses. (Or at least that's how I justify it lol.)

Do you need to refrigerate or freeze the seeds until use?
@VeronicaFlores
@VeronicaFlores 6 жыл бұрын
No- a cool dry place should suffice. I don't keep seeds in the fridge or freezer unless I can guarantee that they won't encounter moisture (plus who has that sort of fridge space?)

Very informative video, but must add from years of experience that drying the seeds on a paper towel works best. Also be very selective of the tomatoes you save the seeds from. Be safe & thank you

I find they stick horribly to paper towels, and often result in poorer germination, as the bleaching processes used for paper towels is much harsher than most coffee filters. And yeah... don't save seeds from sickly plants, or ones you don't like the flavor of. I guess that isn't a given? :P

Can you use a green tomato or does it need to be ripe?
@Jim19826301
@Jim19826301 6 жыл бұрын
Green tomatoes will result in poor quality seed. Bad germination rate. If any germination as all! I always use tomatoes that split or are no good for eating.
@VeronicaFlores
@VeronicaFlores 6 жыл бұрын
Yep what they said- seeds have a better shot at germination if saved from fully ripe fruit!

In my case, I just throw the seeds into the sieve then put the sieve under tap water and let it all run, soaking the seeds. Whilst soaking the seeds I start pressing the seeds against the sieve, pressing firmly with my fingers, and the 'gooey' just runs through with the water. After that, I take the 'clean' seeds out of the sieve with a spoon onto a flat surface and spread them, so that they dry. 24 hours later, the seeds are dry and ready to be stored. I'm gonna try your method soon

hi I thought this info you might find interesting. Fedco seeds. They cover many seed topics and are a good coop organization to deal with. Look for seed library.
@VeronicaFlores

Potentially looking at them for rootstock and cover crop seed. I prefer my veg seed from more localized sources when possible, but thanks for the tip!
@johndoe-il7ju

Local is always good if you can find what you want. Fedco is a good source of root stock and what they call farm seed for cover and pasture and soil building and such. As you said you were considering. They have good charts and tables on what various seeds will do and not do.@@VeronicaFlores

Last year I just stopped picking tomatoes and let them go to seed naturally. Now tomatoes have become a noxious weed in my greenhouse. They are just coming up everywhere. Apparently my cherry trees even want to grow cherry tomatoes. This is worse than the kale infestation of '06. Oh bother.
