Hi my name is Paul & I’m Organic Dairy Farmer South Dakota. I farm with my younger brother & we milk 50 cows. We are a 4th generation family farm that farms 400 acres in which we raise corn, oats, alfalfa, soybeans plus we do rotational grazing with our milk cows.
We have been a certified organic dairy since November of 2006 & we take a lot of pride in what we do & strive to produce the highest quality products that we can.
I hope I can teach you a little bit of something about organic farming also in process maybe have a little fun along the way. Don’t be afraid to think outside they box!

Fall seeding of alfalfa will save you time in spring. That’s usually when we all are short on time.

We have an organic guy near us that has struggled with winter Wheat, so he plants winter Rye instead. He gets really nice yields too which has me learning towards starting up with winter Rye. We would be able to sell the straw bales easily too, the last few years small straw bales are going for $8 a bale in the fall and as high as $12 a bale in January. I would really recommend looking into winter Rye if there is a market to sell it in your area and if the straw sells well.

I did have several people reccomend winter rye as well. The market for rye can be a bit of a challenge to sell sometimes. Plus I kinda wanted to try wheat as we have never tried it before. Also I checked with our grain marketer about prices between the two and winter wheat sells for 4 to 5 dollars more per bushel. I tried talking to a lot of people about it to try and get the best suggestions for growing it successfully. Hopefully it will turn out well. Thanks for the suggestion and for watching Bill.

@@stephenfonder7409 I hope you small grain endeavor goes well, I lean towards small grains myself. Every once and awhile a pest or fungus rolls through and either really hurts the corn or bean crop in my area. The small grain guys seem to have less issues, mostly because there is not many of them and they are not neighbors. Still have to be vigilant though to grow a good crop.

Yes older equipment is just prone to having problems with sometimes. I wonder if they even make brand new grain drills anymore?

Keep your wheat closer to home, that way you can watch it more and logistically you don’t have to move all of your equipment to the far away field

In theory, could you replace planting oats with winter wheat? Then you don’t have to worry about planting oats in the spring to save you time?

Thing is we still need a little oats for cattle feed. The only reason we’re doing some winter wheat is for more farm income to make up for inflation which our milk price isn’t keeping up with.

It is not organic seed. Organic regulations allow for the use of conventional seed as long as it is non-gmo seed and you have the documentation to prove it.

What time do you guys start milking the corn and soybean prices must be good this year could you make a living just doing corn and soybeans and get rid of the cows raise beef instead you wouldn't have to milk them twice a day who do you guys ship your milk to organic valley that's who picks up in new England where I farm and stoney field yogurt horizon was in new England and they dropped there producers organic and stoney field picked them up

Well… We’re not exactly early birds when comes to starting milking cows in the morning but always try to keep 12 hours between milkings. As far as just doing grain farming or having some stock cow. Well, yes we’ve thought about it. It would definitely been a change. I just wish we could get paid more money for our milk. Our milk price is no where near keeping up with the rate of inflation. All I can say is this world needs some leadership change and every single Rothschild central banking System in the world needs to be abolished.

Have u though of putting in Timothy grass with alfalfa

In a normal year we plant oats with alfalfa but it just didn’t out this year to do that way. It was too late to plant Timothy grass with the alfalfa this year.
