Entlistungsfreude! I've been in Germany 10 years and never heard this! I ADORE it!

This makes me want to make a list right now! 😂❤
@MelvinlillyАй бұрын
German native speaker here. Sorry, but that word does not exist to my knowledge. Entlistung does not mean crossing sth off your to-do-list, it means that a thing/task is no longer existent and is therefore taken off a list. Hence, it is NOT erased because you did it. Crossing stuff off a list of actual tasks would be described as "abhaken" but I have never heard of a noun referring to the joy of doing that ;)

Great podcast Jesse thanks again from About Time Organic Farm. I am a student of Ben Hartman, so this name fits quite well,. And also it's about time you have some good organic food so as they say, head on over to about time organic farm. Oh and did I mention I want to retire soon from my day job, and you guessed, it it's about time!!!

I love your idea of positions on the farm
@denisekelley2292Ай бұрын
I really like the idea of positions in farming. I might use this in my backyard garden with my team (husband and sons). This would be especially helpful with kids or helpers new to farming. As they master task and get older or as seasons/needs change, add more to their knowledge bank. This would save time for the farmer (mom) and get things done better/quicker. Hopefully less grumbling from the team (kids and husband). FYI kids are 19 and 21, lol. They do a great job with building, heavy lifting and infrastructure.

I think you may overstretch the "Positions" analogy a bit, yea :D I know the feeling. To me the nugget of the idea there is just "specialization before generalization" - get good at specific tasks, then slowly widen the repertoire until you are good at all the relevant tasks. Which is a very important concept, but also one that should be at the heart of most internships and trainings already.

Looking for any advice on keeping bunched kale and celery looking fresh on the market table? Those are always the first to wilt on me, especially during the hot humid season. Loving the Growers daily show..
@timbushell8640Ай бұрын
Yer, positions, but using Cricket... "Silly-mid-on" does stretch the idea : )))) Large commercial construction, certainly does this, those that design, manage and build the concrete elements really don't touch the fire alarms or the Air-Conditioning, etc., and yes specialise but also grow a little and especially those jobs that touch theirs... say AC and fire alarm, but not say AC and basement-de-watering. Within your analogy someone doing sowing, cutting and maybe even seed saving, whilst interacting with the harvester and sellers, etc., works well for me. Thanks for the excellent show.

I started The Narrow Path Farm in 2020 in Central with the idea of turning 6 acres of wild woods into a food Forrest. It’s had major challenges but keep on keeping on. Trying to learn how to make a living off it which has its own challenges. Working full time as a martial arts instructor and farming with all my other time can be physically draining. Would love to learn more about farming in dense woods if you have any guidance 👍 Oh… and… you’re awesome!

I travelled 2x to Germany for Trade Shows back in the olden days (80s-90s). Our parent company was German. One day the Americans, who knew many terms in German are compond words, decided to invent a new word for escalators >>> “uppen+zie+ausgang = uppenzieausgang.” Everyone at the parent company thought it was hilarious and ingenious. I wonder if it ever caught on?

We are called Think Little Farm after Wendell Berry's essay "Think Little." Not only is it a stark reminder of how we, as humans, tend to forget to be deeply introspective in regard to issues like race and the climate, but it also serves as a sort of small farm manifesto, a reminder to continue asking "how much is enough?"

11:30 - personally I would (and don't) bunch anything in the field and haven't for almost 20 years. For me, I want to do all the bending and pulling/cutting quickly and then get into the shade to wash and bunch. I've tried bunching in the field and absolutely hate it. Separating each task and doing them batch-style is way more efficient in my book.

Our farm name is stuck in the mud farm. When my wife kids and I were building our house, it was a really wet year . We had this older neighbor who would stop by every day and harass me . I got everything you can imagine stuck in the mud pick up trucks tractor dump trucks and a crane . 60 inches of rain and rocky clay . This neighbor who we ended up loving ( hated at the time ) would always say how’s it going at stuck in the mud farm. So the name stuck. Ted passed in 2020 from covid our farm name reminds me of him .

Shamburg Pork & Poultry, after the not-a-town-anymore that we live in and what we offered at market. We have since retired from farming after being too chicken to quit our day jobs and scale up.

Coywolf Farms. The Eastern Coyote, a hybrid of Western Coyote, Timber Wolf, Grey Wolf, and a little bit of domestic dog, (breeding with what they could as they pushed their range eastward) now interbreeding amongst themselves, selecting and maintaining that perfect genetic mix to hunt open fields as well as full forest, while existing close to humans (that little bit of dog in the mix). Some scientists would insist, because this is now a breeding population, having selected that, and keeping that perfect genetic mix for their new niche, constitutes a new species. Coyote+Wolf = Coywolf. And we, late in life, started farming - small scale, no-till - are a new species of farmers. And some naysayers thought the name would have negative connotations, because people dislike predators. Yeah, exactly! Nobody else is going to do it. That's why we did it.

Sludge has been for decades in many states (NC, Kansas, Maine). Probably many other states too but there is no awareness of how bad the problem is at the national level

Could I realistically grow organics in my backyard of my home in a medium sized subdivision, about 100 homes?
@FlachickenmanАй бұрын
If you don't use chemicals of course
@denisekelley2292Ай бұрын
I do. I make my compost and have a source for reliable certified organic compost (I do use raised beds for more control, and I don't spray. I'm not super hardcore, just do the best I can. We can't control everything that goes on around us.
@FlachickenmanАй бұрын
@denisekelley2292 yes that is why I moved my bees to country, everyone in the subdivision sprayed pesticides/glyphosate...not to mention mosquito sprayer! 10k bees overnight...dead at hive!
