I decided to use Futerra Netless Blankets on my entire lawn renovation instead of peat moss. Was the decision worth it? In this video I give the pros and cons to using erosion/seeding blankets instead of peat moss. I also give a 35 day update on my Kentucky Bluegrass Lawn Renovation consisting of Mazama, Everest, and Bluebank cultivars.
These cultivars are designed to be very dark green grass that also does well in shade. They are elite cultivars of Kentucky Bluegrass.
The pros to using Futerra Netless Blankets are that they prevent washouts, hold moisture very well, and help extremely well with grass seed germination. On the opposite side, the cons of using these erosion blankets is that the installation can be a difficult process, you do not know how much moisture they hold at times, the cost a lot of money, and finding the stakes if you are reel mowing is difficult.

Did you have any reservations about those blankets breaking down? How long did it take before they weren’t visible? I’ve heard of other people trying to remove them just after germination. On the fence about using them this fall.

The easy way to find them is just to put a zip tie sticking up on each one so you have a bunch of little flags of where they all are. This would make locating and removing them really easy.

Great video. I used Dewitt erosion control blankets which I believe are coconut fibers and without them I would have had terrible germination on my SLOPED front lawn. We got 9 inches of rain in less than 2 weeks. As far as stakes go, I went with biodegradable stakes (which still take a couple years to disappear) so I didn't have to pull up metal. Futerra was unavailable at the time but now I see that Twin City will ship them out. If I ended up doing another reno, I'd go with Futerra + the biodegradable stakes. Thanks for your 'real life' videos. Great work.

Another approach, one can buy a tremendous amount of premium seed for less than the cost of the blankets, meaning you could just keep over-seeding any washout areas with more seed rather than investing in the blankets. All depends on how much time you give yourself before frost I suppose.

Yeah same here. I don't get many storms in late summer/early fall, so don't have to deal with much wash out during germination, which is nice. I just rent a peat moss spreader and cover with peat moss or compost mix, and keep the birds away with anti-bird reflective tape tied to stakes. My kids are gonna run out there too early and mess it up anyway lol.

@@wcbscout the problem with washouts is that all of the seed collects in one area which becomes problematic with overcrowding. That means fungus and different growing properties of the grass in those areas compared to the rest of the lawn.

I've been in turf grass maintenance for 40 years and the benefits you highlighted are correct but it is so cost prohibitive that I will only use it on severely sloped soil and in places where the water runs off. The $700 cost sure goes a long way in your pocket, towards reseeding areas or the extra water that you said you saved. Used in areas of high erosion will definitely save you time and effort. Anyone that's ever had to scrape muddy runoff would appreciate that their efforts were focused elsewhere. I've never pulled the staples, ever. And never found one the hard way with a reel mower. That I know of. The steel is very hard on the mower and very soft on the staple. Just be sure to push them in deep and you'll be fine. They'll rust away in a few years anyway.

These absolutely work...at least with good seed. Barenbrug Commercial Seed KBG, and day 6, you gotta look really close, but there's 10's of Thousands of tiny blades coming through. No affiliation, no scams, just a regular guy with water issues on the property that needed thick grass to fill in and absorb every ounce of water; I watched this video, that's how I learned of them. Day 6 is just blades, prior to tillering, and not even all seeds coming up yet. They work. Spend the money. Do it once and do it right, or do it all over and spend more and wait another year.

It occurred to me as I was watching your video, that the solution to your stake problem would be to obtain some brightly colored twine and tie a series of closed loops perhaps 6 to 8" in diameter, and insert the stake through the loop as you secure the blanket. That would make it very easy to locate and pull out when you are ready to remove prior to mowing. A very cheap fix!

We all know if you didn’t put down the blankets, wash out guaranteed lol ! Those blankets also insulate the ground keeping the temps up at night aiding in germination. I would say you hit it outta the park with this one. I’m new to the urea game I’m just curious why you went granular instead of your usual foliar app. Great video and look forward to the mowing.

Thanks Ron! You're 100% correct with the storms. They definitely would've came if I skipped on the blankets. As far as the urea, I did not want to put down foliar applications on baby grass. Now that they're maturing, I will probably start giving it small doses in foliar form. You can also put down more N at once doing granular. The negative to that with urea is that it shows up spotty because of the big prill size.

I have a 5300 sqft project this year with GCI Turf Blue Heat KBG. I have a new Irrigreen sprinkler system this year and have experienced seeds being pushed up hill by my sprinkler heads. I struggled to find the Futerra F4 Netless Blankets. I couldn't find the 78" x 90ft blankets, but I did finally find the 39" x 90ft blankets. The saler had a single pallet of about 30 - 39"x90ft blankets for $45 each...."ouch!" The saler eventually said they are going to discontinue selling the blankets and offered $20 per 39"x90ft blanket if I were to buy the whole pallet. I said, "SOLD"! When I went to pick up the blankets there were only 26 rolls on the pallet which saved me more money and is still more than enough for my project. With the money I saved, I used to buy 1000 of those biodegradable 4" staples. Hope I have enough! Thank you for your enlightening review!

@@LAWNLIFE So I ended up get another box of stacks so I had 1500 total. The 39" x 90ft blanks took me 14hrs to cover my 5300 sqft yard. It sucked! My back was more sore from putting down those blankets than leveling my yard with 9 cuyds of screened topsoil by shovel and wheel barrel. Getting zero washout with these blankets and they really hold moisture in. Irrigating 0.15" of water 3x per day seems like too much in se areas since some of the blankets appear saturated till 10am when I start irrigating again for the day. The soil is so soft I can't even walk on it without leaving deep footprints in my lawn.

I added 10% rye from super seed store in my custom blend of 40% everest 50% midnight. Then I overseeded and did extra on a few trouble spots of 50/50 bluebank and blue note. It's becoming hard to tell when I stop watching the big players like Connor and Ryan and go out and look at my own. Go for it the difference is really epic from the old black beauty ultra lawn.

Thank you so much for doing this. I know Ryan Knorr used then as well but he mention that he used biodegradable stakes. Do they really exist and would they be better to use, rather than the metal stakes?
@LAWNLIFE

To be honest I didn't realize there were biodegradable stakes until I already put my blankets down. Otherwise I definitely would've used them. Just because of the fact that I'm reel mowing. If I wasn't reel mowing the metal stakes wouldn't have been an issue. Thanks for watching!

you said they were $60 each, for 600 sq ft. not too bad, when you think of greenscape or pennington being $30 for just 200 sq ft. can you let me know exactly how to get the ones you got. bc 1 roll might cover most of my backyard.

What does it actually cost for those blankets?
@robertjohnston25
@robertjohnston25 3 жыл бұрын
So now those blankets are there permanently? Pete from GCI Turf said he didn’t wana mess with the blankets cuz he’s going to be reel mowing and didn’t want them to possibly interfere. I’m wondering if the blankets have some long term things to consider that I was hoping you’d get into. (Guess you don’t have that experience yet) but wouldn’t the blanket continue to help keep your soil drying out long term too? Could this also lead to fungus in the future? Etc
@LAWNLIFE
@LAWNLIFE 3 жыл бұрын
These blankets are different than the ones Pete talked about. These are Netless Blankets that deteriorate over time. There will be nothing left of these by next year. The ones he was talking about has netting in them that would get caught in the reel non-stop

Hey.. when killed your grass did you pick up all the dead grass after you cut it short and dethatch? I'm doing two spots in my yard now. One I took down a shed and plantings grass in a 10×15 spot. Had to bring in lot of top soil for that. The other spot I'm doing I had some shitty grass in a spot so I killed a spot about 15×15 I cut it all the way down on mower and then dethatch. Sill have dead grass in there but you see dirt. Think I need to pull all that dead grass or put a little top soil down
