I always wonder if intensive farming is worth the effort in NZ. We are such an expensive country and low cost systems I think suit farming better here. I had a friend who's father always complained about the neighbour who had a series 1 landrover a team of dogs and a couple of horses. He was one of the trustees for him. My friends father had two bulldozers immaculate sheds a cattle stud and fantastic fencing, cropped etc, along with corresponding debt. The neighbour was in the war, Crete, Africa, Italy which could have changed his perspective on life. Spend a lot of time on a horse with his wife and daughters mustering, spent a month a year at the beach, farm covered in thistles and poor pastures. When he died, my friends father said he had riches he could only imagine, it made him think of the money he had spend that never really made sense financially, though at the time Reps promised him riches, kudos and a straight road to heaven. The low cost neighbour over time ended up way ahead of my friends family both financially and in quality of life. Just saying.

Very thought provoking comment. Thanks for sharing. We are currently looking at the way we farm and is it the best for us and our family.
