Here in New hampshire I can't set out fall brassicas later than the first week of August and I usually try to get them in at the end of July. I may have 8-10 weeks til my first frost at that time but they need a little extra time when you consider the dwindling sunlight hours.

I plant broccoli from seed in my garden outside this time of year for a fall crop. I don't bother starting them indoors, just look for heat tolerant strains. I can move them if required to fill an area after the bush beans are finished.

Can you make a video on how to plant Tstatsoi for the Fall harvest? I learned about Tsatsoi from your videos, and planted it early this year in March, and was a huge hit in our family. But I have zero experience with it -- how can I make it grow again in Fall? thank you! We just had a week-long temperatures of 95+ degrees in Albany, NY, so I suppose planting it early now won't work?

I’m still succession planting summer crops that do okay here (Texas z9a) but I start my fall brassicas mid August due to my frost date of Nov 30th. 😮 Plus I don’t have space in my temporary house (aka RV while we build our house) to start seeds indoors sadly. It’s so hard to have to wait! Fall and winter are the only time for me to grow any brassicas at all. Spring is too short here and they wouldn’t grow heads until fall anyways (if they survived the summer). It’s so interesting how different climates can be from just one state to another!

I have seedlings on my back deck. They are on standby: as each potato plant is harvested a seedling will take its place. Mind, none of them are brassicas: I have 3-4 melons, a winter squash, and more. I find that I would rather eat a melon than a cabbage.

@StoneyAcresGardening4 ай бұрын
@@kimbarrickman1882 I clearly stated in the video that your planting time is based on your first fall frost date. Garden Zone has nothing to do with it, it is all based on when your first frost arrives in the fall. I talked to someone just yesterday that lives in Zone 8 Oregon, who has the same first frost date as I have in Zone 6b. If they waited based on Zone they would be too late. Garden zones really aren't very important when it comes to planting times. It's all down to when you have frost and cooler weather.

Why did they need to be started indoors? Is it because it is too hot for them to be planted directly?
@anonanon19824 ай бұрын
Fall/winter crops need to have significant growth on them before planting outside. The dwindling sunlight makes them grow slower in fall/winter. It’s too hot for them to be started from seed outside right now and direct sowing in the fall doesn’t give them enough time to grow up before the days are too short.

No way too early for spinach. You'll plant spinach about 8 weeks before your first frost.
@connecticutwormsgardens4 ай бұрын
@ourstonyacres I (personally) add a week to 10 days to the front end of your suggested guidelines. since I want to 8 weeks of indoor growth before setting plants out, starting seeds 8 weeks before the 1st frost date is not sufficient. The 8 week growth clock starts *after* germination, not when seeds are planted. It can rake 7-10 days for germination.
@StoneyAcresGardening4 ай бұрын
Actually I took germination time into account with these times. The 8 week old transplants are 8 weeks from planting.
